Photochargeable Mn-Based Metal-Organic Framework and Decoupled Photocatalysis

Designing multifunctional materials that mimic the light-dark decoupling of natural photosynthesis is a key challenge in the field of energy conversion. Herein, we introduce MnBr-253, a precious metal-free metal-organic framework (MOF) built on Al nodes, bipyridine linkers and MnBr(CO)3(bipyridine) complexes. Upon irradiation, MnBr-253 colloids demonstrate an electron photocharging capacity of ~42 C ⋅ g-1 MOF, with state-of-the-art photocharging rate (1.28 C ⋅ s-1 ⋅ g-1 MOF) and incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency of ~9.4 % at 450 nm. Spectroscopic and computational studies support effective electron accumulation at the Mn complex while high porosity and Mn loading account for the notable electron storage performance. The charged MnBr-253 powders were successfully applied for hydrogen evolution under dark conditions thus emulating the light-decoupled reactivity of photosynthesis.

Anisotropic Dual S-Scheme Heterojunctions Mimic Natural Photosynthetic System for Boosting Photoelectric Response

The design of heterojunctions that mimic natural photosynthetic systems holds great promise for enhancing photoelectric response. However, the limited interfacial space charge layer (SCL) often fails to provide sufficient driving force for the directional migration of inner charge carriers. Drawing inspiration from the electron transport chain (ETC) in natural photosynthesis system, we developed a novel anisotropic dual S-scheme heterojunction artificial photosynthetic system composed of Bi2O3-BiOBr-AgI for the first time, with Bi2O3 and AgI selectively distributed along the bicrystal facets of BiOBr. Compared to traditional semiconductors, the anisotropic carrier migration in BiOBr overcomes the recombination resulting from thermodynamic diffusion, thereby establishing a potential ETC for the directional migration of inner charge carriers. Importantly, this pioneering bioinspired design overcomes the limitations imposed by the limited distribution of SCL in heterojunctions, resulting in a remarkable 55-fold enhancement in photoelectric performance. Leveraging the etching of thiols on Ag-based materials, this dual S-scheme heterojunction is further employed in the construction of photoelectrochemical sensors for the detection of acetylcholinesterase and organophosphorus pesticides.

A Self-Assembled MOF-Escherichia Coli Hybrid System for Light-Driven Fuels and Valuable Chemicals Synthesis

The development of semi-artificial photosynthetic systems, which integrate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with industrial microbial cell factories for light-driven synthesis of fuels and valuable chemicals, represents a highly promising avenue for both research advancements and practical applications. In this study, an MOF (PCN-222) utilizing racemic-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin and zirconium chloride (ZrCl4) as primary constituents is synthesized. Employing a self-assembly process, a hybrid system is constructed, integrating engineered Escherichia coli (E. coli) to investigate light-driven hydrogen and lysine production. These results demonstrate that the light-irradiated biohybrid system efficiently produce H2 with a quantum efficiency of 0.75% under full spectrum illumination, the elevated intracellular reducing power NADPH is also observed. By optimizing the conditions, the biohybrid system achieves a maximum lysine production of 18.25 mg L-1, surpassing that of pure bacteria by 332%. Further investigations into interfacial electron transfer mechanisms reveals that PCN-222 efficiently captures light and facilitates the transfer of photo-generated electrons into E. coli cells. It is proposed that the interfacial energy transfer process is mediated by riboflavin, with facilitation by secreted small organic acids acting as hole scavengers for PCN-222. This study establishes a crucial foundation for future research into the light-driven biomanufacturing using E. coli-based hybrid systems.

A photocatalytic redox cycle over a polyimide catalyst drives efficient solar-to-H2O2 conversion

Circumventing the conventional two-electron oxygen reduction pathway remains a great problem in enhancing the efficiency of H2O2 photosynthesis. A promising approach to achieve outstanding photocatalytic activity involves the utilization of redox intermediates. Here, we engineer a polyimide aerogel photocatalyst with photoreductive carbonyl groups for non-sacrificial H2O2 production. Under photoexcitation, carbonyl groups on the photocatalyst surface are reduced, forming an anion radical intermediate. The produced intermediate is oxidized by O2 to produce H2O2 and subsequently restores the carbonyl group. The high catalytic efficiency is ascribed to a photocatalytic redox cycle mediated by the radical anion, which not only promotes oxygen adsorption but also lowers the energy barrier of O2 reduction reaction for H2O2 generation. An apparent quantum yield of 14.28% at 420 ± 10 nm with a solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 0.92% is achieved. Moreover, we demonstrate that a mere 0.5 m2 self-supported polyimide aerogel exposed to natural sunlight for 6 h yields significant H2O2 production of 34.3 mmol m-2.

In situ/Operando Synchrotron Radiation Analytical Techniques for CO2/CO Reduction Reaction: From Atomic Scales to Mesoscales

Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide/carbon monoxide reduction reaction (CO(2)RR) has emerged as a prospective and appealing strategy to realize carbon neutrality for manufacturing sustainable chemical products. Developing highly active electrocatalysts and stable devices has been demonstrated as effective approach to enhance the conversion efficiency of CO(2)RR. In order to rationally design electrocatalysts and devices, a comprehensive understanding of the intrinsic structure evolution within catalysts and micro-environment change around electrode interface, particularly under operation conditions, is indispensable. Synchrotron radiation has been recognized as a versatile characterization platform, garnering widespread attention owing to its high brightness, elevated flux, excellent directivity, strong polarization and exceptional stability. This review systematically introduces the applications of synchrotron radiation technologies classified by radiation sources with varying wavelengths in CO(2)RR. By virtue of in situ/operando synchrotron radiationanalytical techniques, we also summarize relevant dynamic evolution processes from electronic structure, atomic configuration, molecular adsorption, crystal lattice and devices, spanning scales from the angstrom to the micrometer. The merits and limitations of diverse synchrotron characterization techniques are summarized, and their applicable scenarios in CO(2)RR are further presented. On the basis of the state-of-the-art fourth-generation synchrotron facilities, a perspective for further deeper understanding of the CO(2)RR process using synchrotron radiation analytical techniques is proposed.

Review on Microreactors for Photo-Electrocatalysis Artificial Photosynthesis Regeneration of Coenzymes

In recent years, with the outbreak of the global energy crisis, renewable solar energy has become a focal point of research. However, the utilization efficiency of natural photosynthesis (NPS) is only about 1%. Inspired by NPS, artificial photosynthesis (APS) was developed and utilized in applications such as the regeneration of coenzymes. APS for coenzyme regeneration can overcome the problem of high energy consumption in comparison to electrocatalytic methods. Microreactors represent a promising technology. Compared with the conventional system, it has the advantages of a large specific surface area, the fast diffusion of small molecules, and high efficiency. Introducing microreactors can lead to more efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly coenzyme regeneration in artificial photosynthesis. This review begins with a brief introduction of APS and microreactors, and then summarizes research on traditional electrocatalytic coenzyme regeneration, as well as photocatalytic and photo-electrocatalysis coenzyme regeneration by APS, all based on microreactors, and compares them with the corresponding conventional system. Finally, it looks forward to the promising prospects of this technology.

Advances in Defect Engineering of Metal Oxides for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction technology, capable of converting low-density solar energy into high-density chemical energy, stands as a promising approach to alleviate the energy crisis and achieve carbon neutrality. Semiconductor metal oxides, characterized by their abundant reserves, good stability, and easily tunable structures, have found extensive applications in the field of photocatalysis. However, the wide bandgap inherent in metal oxides contributes to their poor efficiency in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Defect engineering presents an effective strategy to address these challenges. This paper reviews the research progress in defect engineering to enhance the photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance of metal oxides, summarizing defect classifications, preparation methods, and characterization techniques. The focus is on defect engineering, represented by vacancies and doping, for improving the performance of metal oxide photocatalysts. This includes advancements in expanding the photoresponse range, enhancing photogenerated charge separation, and promoting CO2 molecule activation. Finally, the paper provides a summary of the current issues and challenges faced by defect engineering, along with a prospective outlook on the future development of photocatalytic CO2 reduction technology.

Pt(II)/Pd(II)-Based Metallosupramolecular Architectures as Light Harvesting Systems and their Applications

The development of artificial light-harvesting systems mimicking the natural photosynthesis method is an ever-growing field of research. Numerous systems such as polymers, metal complexes, POFs, COFs, supramolecular frameworks etc. have been fabricated to accomplish more efficient energy transfer and storage. Among them, the supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) formed by non-covalent metal-ligand interaction, have shown the capacity to not only undergo single and multistep energy migration but also to utilize the harvested energy for a wide variety of applications such as photocatalysis, tunable emissive systems, encrypted anti-counterfeiting materials, white light emitters etc. This review sheds light on the light-harvesting behavior of both the 2D metallacycles and 3D metallacages where design ingenuity has been executed to afford energy harvesting by both donor ligands as well as metal acceptors.

Artificial Photosynthesis for Regioselective Reduction of NAD(P)+ to NAD(P)H Using Water as an Electron and Proton Source

In photosynthesis, four electrons and four protons taken from water in photosystem II (PSII) are used to reduce NAD(P)+ to produce NAD(P)H in photosystem I (PSI), which is the most important reductant to reduce CO2. Despite extensive efforts to mimic photosynthesis, artificial photosynthesis to produce NAD(P)H using water electron and proton sources has yet to be achieved. Herein, we report the photocatalytic reduction of NAD(P)+ to NAD(P)H and its analogues in a molecular model of PSI, which is combined with water oxidation in a molecular model of PSII. Photoirradiation of a toluene/trifluoroethanol (TFE)/borate buffer aqueous solution of hydroquinone derivatives (X-QH2), 9-mesityl-10-methylacridinium ion, cobaloxime, and NAD(P)+ (PSI model) resulted in the quantitative and regioselective formation of NAD(P)H and p-benzoquinone derivatives (X-Q). X-Q was reduced to X-QH2, accompanied by the oxidation of water to dioxygen under the photoirradiation of a toluene/TFE/borate buffer aqueous solution of [(N4Py)FeII]2+ (PSII model). The PSI and PSII models were combined using two glass membranes and two liquid membranes to produce NAD(P)H using water as an electron and proton source with the turnover number (TON) of 54. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to achieve the stoichiometry of photosynthesis, photocatalytic reduction of NAD(P)+ by water to produce NAD(P)H and O2.

Fully Conjugated 2D sp2 Carbon-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold great promise for solar-driven hydrogen production. However, metal-free COFs for photocatalytic overall water splitting remain elusive, primarily due to challenges in simultaneously regulating their band structures and catalytic sites to enable concurrent half-reactions. Herein, two types of π-conjugated COFs containing the same donor-acceptor structure are constructed via Knoevenagel condensation and Schiff base reaction to afford cyanovinylene- and imine-bridged COFs, respectively. The difference in the linkage leads to a remarkable difference in their photocatalytic activity toward water splitting. The 2D sp2 carbon-linked COF exhibits notable activity for photocatalytic overall water splitting, which can reach an apparent quantum efficiency of 2.53% at 420 nm. In contrast, the 2D imine-linked COF cannot catalyze the overall water-splitting reaction. Mechanistic investigations reveal that the cyanovinylene linkage is essential in modulating the band structure and promoting charge separation in COFs, thereby enabling overall water splitting. Moreover, it is further shown that crystallinity substantially impacts the photocatalytic performance of COFs. This study represents the first successful example of developing metal-free COFs with high crystallinity for photocatalytic overall water splitting.

How to Survive at Point Nemo? Fischer-Tropsch, Artificial Photosynthesis, and Plasma Catalysis for Sustainable Energy at Isolated Habitats

Inhospitable, inaccessible, and extremely remote alike the famed pole of inaccessibility, aka Point Nemo, the isolated locations in deserts, at sea, or in outer space are difficult for humans to settle, let alone to thrive in. Yet, they present a unique set of opportunities for science, economy, and geopolitics that are difficult to ignore. One of the critical challenges for settlers is the stable supply of energy both to sustain a reasonable quality of life, as well as to take advantage of the local opportunities presented by the remote environment, e.g., abundance of a particular resource. The possible solutions to this challenge are heavily constrained by the difficulty and prohibitive cost of transportation to and from such a habitat (e.g., a lunar or Martian base). In this essay, the advantages and possible challenges of integrating Fischer-Tropsch, artificial photosynthesis, and plasma catalysis into a robust, scalable, and efficient self-contained system for energy harvesting, storage, and utilization are explored.

Regulating the Active Sites of Cs2 AgBiCl6 by Doping for Efficient Coupling of Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction and Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation

Halide perovskites exhibit outstanding optoelectronic properties, which make them an ideal choice for photocatalytic CO2 reduction and benzyl alcohol (BA) oxidation. Nevertheless, the simultaneous realization of the above redox coupling reactions on halide perovskites remains a great challenge, as it requires distinct catalytic sites for different target reactions. Herein, the catalytic sites of Cs2 AgBiCl6 (CABC) are regulated by doping Fe for efficient coupling of photocatalytic CO2 reduction and BA oxidation. The Fe-doped CABC (Fe: CABC) exhibits an enhanced visible-light response and effective charge separation. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal a synergistic interplay between Bi and Fe sites, where the Bi and Fe sites have lower activation energies toward CO2 reduction and BA oxidation. Further investigations demonstrate that electrons and holes prefer to accumulate at the Bi site and Fe site under light irradiation, respectively, which creates favorable conditions for facilitating CO2 reduction and BA oxidation. The resultant Fe: CABC achieves a high photocatalytic performance toward CO (18.5 µmol g-1  h-1 ) and BD (1.1 mmol g-1  h-1 ) generation, which surpasses most of the state-of-the-art halide photocatalysts. This work demonstrates a facile strategy for regulating the catalytic site for redox coupling reactions, which will pave a new way for designing halide perovskites for photocatalysis.

Boosting CO2 Photoreduction via Regulating Charge Transfer Ability in a One-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework

Two-dimensional (2D) imine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold potential for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. However, high energy barrier of imine linkage impede the in-plane photoelectron transfer process, resulting in inadequate efficiency of CO2 photoreduction. Herein, we present a dimensionality induced local electronic modulation strategy through the construction of one-dimensional (1D) pyrene-based covalent organic frameworks (PyTTA-COF). The dual-chain-like edge architectures of 1D PyTTA-COF enable the stabilization of aromatic backbones, thus reducing energy loss during exciton dissociation and thermal relaxation, which provides energetic photoelectron to traverse the energy barrier of imine linkages. As a result, the 1D PyTTA-COF exhibits significantly enhanced CO2 photoreduction activity under visible-light irradiation when coordinated with metal cobalt ion, yielding a remarkable CO evolution of 1003 μmol g-1 over an 8-hour period, which surpasses that of the corresponding 2D counterpart by a factor of 59. These findings present a valuable approach to address in-plane charge transfer limitations in imine-based COFs.

Decoupled Artificial Photosynthesis via a Catalysis-Redox Coupled COF||BiVO4 Photoelectrochemical Device

Artificial photosynthesis is an attractive approach to direct fuel production from sunlight. However, the simultaneous O2 evolution reaction (OER) and CO2 reduction reaction (CDRR) present challenges for product separation and safety. Herein, we propose a strategy to temporally decouple artificial photosynthesis through photoelectrochemical energy storage. We utilized a covalent organic framework (DTCo-COF) with redox-active electron donors (-C-OH moieties) and catalytically active electron acceptors (cobalt-porphyrin) to enable reversible -C-OH/-C═O redox reaction and redox-promoted CO2-to-CO photoreduction. Integrating the COF photocathode with an OER photoanode in a photoelectrochemical device allows the effective storage of OER-generated electrons and protons by -C═O groups. These stored charges can be later employed for CDRR while regenerating -C═O to complete the loop, thus enabling on-demand and separate production of O2 or solar fuels. Our work sets the stage for advancements in decoupled artificial photosynthesis and the development of more efficient solar fuel production technologies.

Enabling artificial photosynthesis systems with molecular recycling: A review of photo- and electrochemical methods for regenerating organic sacrificial electron donors

This review surveys advances in the literature that impact organic sacrificial electron donor recycling in artificial photosynthesis. Systems for photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction are optimized using sacrificial electron donors. One strategy for coupling carbon dioxide reduction and water oxidation to achieve artificial photosynthesis is to use a redox mediator, or recyclable electron donor. This review highlights photo- and electrochemical methods for recycling amines and NADH analogues that can be used as electron donors in artificial photosynthesis. Important properties of sacrificial donors and recycling strategies are also discussed. Compounds from other fields, such as redox flow batteries and decoupled water splitting research, are introduced as alternative recyclable sacrificial electron donors and their oxidation potentials are compared to the redox potentials of some model photosensitizers. The aim of this review is to act as a reference for researchers developing photocatalytic systems with sacrificial electron donors, and for researchers interested in designing new redox mediator and recyclable electron donor species.
