Abstract
Doping of polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons (PCHs) with sulfur atoms is becoming more and more important as a means of creating unique functional materials. Recently, thiophene-containing multiple helicenes have garnered enormous attention due to their intriguing electronic and (chir)optical properties compared with carbohelicenes. However, the efficient synthesis of thiopyran-containing multiple helicenes and the underlying sulfur doping mechanisms are rather unexplored. Herein, the synthesis and structural analysis of a thiopyran-containing double [7]helicene 3 are reported. X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals 3 and its dication with C2-symmetric propeller-shape structures and compact interactions in the solid state. 3 exhibits deep-red to near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence emission. Tunable aromaticity of the central benzene ring and thiopyran rings is found by chemical oxidation, which is further confirmed by nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS), anisotropy of the induced current density (ACID) and harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) analysis. Furthermore, the chiral and photosensitizing characters of 3 are investigated. The excellent deep-red to NIR fluorescence, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and photosensitizing activities suggest that 3 can be used as an outstanding photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and bioimaging, especially paving the way for future CPL-PDT and CPL-bio-probe applications.

Abstract
Atomically precise open-shell graphene fragments, such as extended peri-acenes, hold significant interest for electronics and spintronics. However, their inherent high reactivity poses challenges for synthesis and application. In this study, a novel approach is introduced: the fusion of a zigzag-edged peri-tetracene with an all-armchair-edged hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) via two shared benzene rings to produce a stable open-shell hydrocarbon, named dibenzo-peri-heptacene (DBPH). The DBPH derivative 1 exhibits considerably enhanced stability, with a half-life (t1/2) of 46 days in toluene solution under ambient conditions. This improved stability is attributed to peri-benzannulation, enhanced aromatic stabilization, and kinetic protection of the reactive sites along the zigzag edges. The structure of 1 is unequivocally verified through single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. With a balanced combination of armchair and zigzag edge structures, derivative 1 displays a diradical character of 39.2% and a singlet-triplet gap of ≈-3.16 kcal mol-1. It features a narrow electrochemical energy gap (0.87 eV) and exhibits amphoteric redox behavior. Notably, its dication and dianion states manifest a closed-shell singlet ground state, representing doubly charged structures where a HBC unit is fused with a benzo[f]tetraphene moiety. This research paves the way for synthesizing novel open-shell graphene fragments with adjustable electronic properties and exceptional stability.

Abstract
The introduction of precise pore defects into nanocarbon structures results in the emergence of distinct physicochemical characteristics. However, there is a lack of research on non-planar chiral nanographene involving precise pore defects. Herein, we have developed two analogues to the π-extended pentadecabenzo[9]helicene (EP9H) containing embedded pore defects. Each molecules, namely extended dodecabenzo[7]helicene (ED7H; 1) or extended nonabenzo[5]helicene (EN5H; 2), exhibits dual-state emission. Significantly, the value of |glum| of 1 is exceptionally high at 1.41×10-2 in solution and BCPL as 254 M-1 cm-1. In PMMA film, |glum| of 1 is 8.56×10-3, and in powder film, it is 5.00×10-3. This study demonstrates that nanocarbon molecules with pore defects exhibit dual-state emission properties while maintaining quite good chiral luminescence properties. It was distinguished from the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect corresponding to the nanocarbon without embedded defect. Incorporating pore defects into chiral nanocarbon molecules also simplifies the synthesis process and enhances the solubility of the resulting product. These findings suggest that the introduction of pore defects can be a viable approach to improve nanocarbon molecules.

Abstract
Herein, we present a novel and efficient method for the synthesis of two new polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 1 and 2, through the electrocyclization-dehydrogenation of diradicaloids. The proposed oxidative electrocyclization via intermediate diradicaloids is monitored by electron paramagnetic resonance and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Interestingly, 1 exhibits chirality because of its inherent helical skeleton, and 2 features long-wavelength absorption and near-infrared emission properties due to its extended π-conjugation.

Abstract
A series of 3,3''- and 4,4''-dimethoxy terphenyls with different second substituents on their ortho-positions have been synthesized and investigated upon the possibility to be oxidatively cyclodehydrogenated to the corresponding triphenylenes under Scholl-type conditions. The experimentally obtained selectivities were supported and explained by quantum chemical calculations and conclusions on the involved mechanisms (acid catalyzed arenium-ion mechanism (AIM) vs radical cation mechanism) were drawn.

Abstract
Organic π-conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbons (PHs) with an open-shell diradical character are attracting increasing interest due to their promising applications in organic electronics and spintronics. However, most of the open-shell PHs synthesized thus far are based on planar π-conjugated molecules. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of two new quinodimethane-embedded expanded helicenes H1 and H2. The helical structures of both molecules were revealed using X-ray crystallographic analysis. It was elucidated in detailed experimental and theoretical studies that they possess an open-shell singlet biradical structure in the ground state and show a small energy gap and amphoteric redox behavior. Both compounds can also be easily oxidized or reduced into relatively stable charged species. The dianions of H1 and H2 exhibit similar electronic structures to the respective isoelectronic structures of their all-benzenoid helical analogues according to NMR measurements and theoretical calculations. Moreover, the structures of the dication and dianion of H2 were identified by X-ray crystallographic analysis, revealing the effect of electron transfer on their backbones and aromaticity. This study thus opens up new avenues for both helical polycyclic π-systems and diradicaloids.

Abstract
Polycyclic hydrocarbons with diradical and polyradical characters usually display unique reactivities in ring-cyclization reactions. However, such reactions are rarely used to construct π-extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Here, we describe the synthesis of an S-shaped doubly helical singlet diradicaloid compound and its facile transformation into an unprecedented circumchrysene via a two-stage ring cyclization, which includes: (1) an eletrocylization from diradicaloid precursor and (2) a Scholl reaction. The reaction mechanism was investigated through in situ spectroscopic studies, assisted by theoretical calculations. This reaction sequence yields an optically resolved π-extended [5]helicene derivative with a fluorescence quantum yield up to 85% and a circularly polarized luminescence brightness up to 6.05 M-1 cm-1 in the far-red to near-infrared regions. This sequence also yielded a highly delocalized circumchrysene molecule, exhibiting large electron delocalization, moderate fluorescence quantum yield, and multistage redox properties.

Abstract
While monoradical emitters have emerged as a new route toward efficient organic light-emitting diodes, the luminescence property of organic diradicaloids is still scarcely explored. Herein, by devising a novel radical-radical coupling-based synthetic approach, we report a new class of sulfone-functionalized Chichibabin's hydrocarbon derivatives, SD-1-3, featuring varied substituent patterns and moderate to high diradical characters of 0.44-0.70, as highly stable diradicaloids with rarely seen NIR emission beyond 900 nm. Via comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigations, we reveal that the optoelectronic and magnetic properties of these materials are significantly tuned by the variations of substitutions (H/CF3/OMe) on the molecular skeletons. More importantly, quantum chemical computations indicate that the embedding of sulfone groups has contributed to a breaking of their quasi-C2 symmetry of these diradicaloid molecules and results in an excited-state charge transfer character. Therefore, a remarkably deep NIR emissive wavelength of up to 998 nm, together with a large Stokes shift (∼386 nm), is achieved for the CF3-based SD-2 molecule in tetrahydrofuran. To the best of our knowledge, such a luminescent wavelength of SD-2 has represented the longest wavelengths among the currently reported organic fluorescent radicals. Overall, our work not only establishes a new synthetic approach toward stable Chichibabin's hydrocarbons but also paves the way for designing NIR emissive open-shell materials with both fundamental understanding and feasible control of their luminescent properties.
