Ligand Modulation of Active Sites to Promote Cobalt-Doped 1T-MoS2 Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline Media

Nb Doping Induced the Formation of Protective Layer to Improve the Stability of Fe-Ni3S2 for Seawater Electrolysis

The seawater electrolysis to produce hydrogen is a significant topic on alleviating the energy crisis. Here, the Fe, Nb-Ni3S2 catalyst is prepared by metal-doping strategy, and it shows high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity in alkaline medium, and only needs 1.491 V to deliver a current density of 100 mA cm-2 in simulated seawater. Using Fe, Nb-Ni3S2 as a bifunctional catalyst, the two-electrode electrolyzer only requires a voltage of 1.751 V (without impedance compensation) to drive the current density of 50 mA cm-2, and can run over 150 h stably in the simulated seawater. Importantly, In situ Raman test demonstrates that the outstanding performance of Fe, Nb-Ni3S2 in simulated seawater is ascribed to the in situ formed sulfate protective layer induced by Nb doping, which can effectively inhibit the corrosion of chloride ion, while the protective layer is absent for Fe-Ni3S2. The stable operation of simulated seawater electrolysis under industrial current density further confirms the stability improvement mechanism of forming protective layer. In short, this study provides a new strategy of using Nb dopants inducing the formation of protective layer to enhance the stability of seawater electrolysis.

Tuning Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation Activity: Insights from the Active-Site Distance in LnCu6 Clusters

Atomically precise metal clusters serve as a unique model for unraveling the intricate mechanism of the catalytic reaction and exploring the complex relationship between structure and activity. Herein, three series of water-soluble heterometallic clusters LnCu6, abbreviated as LnCu6-AC (Ln = La, Nd, Gd, Er, Yb; HAC = acetic acid), LnCu6-IM (Ln = La and Nd; IM = Imidazole), and LnCu6-IDA (Ln = Nd; H2IDA = Iminodiacetic acid) are presented, each featuring a uniform metallic core stabilized by distinct protected ligands. Crystal structure analysis reveals a triangular prism topology formed by six Cu2+ ions around one Ln3+ ion in LnCu6, with variations in Cu···Cu distances attributed to different ligands. Electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) shows that these different LnCu6 clusters exhibit different OER activities with remarkable turnover frequency of 135 s-1 for NdCu6-AC, 79 s-1 for NdCu6-IM and 32 s-1 for NdCu6-IDA. Structural analysis and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations underscore the correlation between shorter Cu···Cu distances and improves OER catalytic activity, emphasizing the pivotal role of active-site distance in regulating electrocatalytic OER activities. These results provide valuable insights into the OER mechanism and contribute to the design of efficient homogeneous OER electrocatalysts.

Engineering interfacial sulfur migration in transition-metal sulfide enables low overpotential for durable hydrogen evolution in seawater

Hydrogen production from seawater remains challenging due to the deactivation of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrode under high current density. To overcome the activity-stability trade-offs in transition-metal sulfides, we propose a strategy to engineer sulfur migration by constructing a nickel-cobalt sulfides heterostructure with nitrogen-doped carbon shell encapsulation (CN@NiCoS) electrocatalyst. State-of-the-art ex situ/in situ characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal the restructuring of the CN@NiCoS interface, clearly identifying dynamic sulfur migration. The NiCoS heterostructure stimulates sulfur migration by creating sulfur vacancies at the Ni3S2-Co9S8 heterointerface, while the migrated sulfur atoms are subsequently captured by the CN shell via strong C-S bond, preventing sulfide dissolution into alkaline electrolyte. Remarkably, the dynamically formed sulfur-doped CN shell and sulfur vacancies pairing sites significantly enhances HER activity by altering the d-band center near Fermi level, resulting in a low overpotential of 4.6 and 8 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline freshwater and seawater media, and long-term stability up to 1000 h. This work thus provides a guidance for the design of high-performance HER electrocatalyst by engineering interfacial atomic migration.

Electron transfer at the heterojunction interface of CoP/MoS2 for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Modulating the electronic states of electrocatalysts is critical for achieving efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, how to develop electrocatalysts with superior electronic states is an urgent challenge that must be addressed. Herein, we prepared the CoP/MoS2 heterojunction with a microsphere morphology consisting of thin nanosheets using a facile two-step method. The catalyst's ultrathin nanosheet structure not only provides an extensive surface area for exposing active sites, but it also enables ion transport and bubble release. Electron transfer occurs between CoP and MoS2, optimizing the heterojunction's charge distribution and enhancing the intermediates' adsorption capabilities. As a result, the CoP/MoS2 heterojunction exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity with an overpotential of only 88 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, which exceeds both the sulfide heterojunction Co9S8/MoS2 and the phosphide heterojunction CoP/CoMoP2. The experimental results and DFT calculation results show that the former has stronger synergistic effects and higher HER activity. This work sheds light on the exploration of efficient heterojunction electrocatalysts with excellent electronic structures.

Stabilizing and Activating Active Sites: 1T-MoS2 Supported Pd Single Atoms for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Metallic 1T-MoS2 with high intrinsic electronic conductivity performs Pt-like catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, obtaining pure 1T-MoS2 is challenging due to its high formation energy and metastable properties. Herein, an in situ SO4 2--anchoring strategy is reported to synthesize a thin layer of 1T-MoS2 loaded on commercial carbon. Single Pd atoms, constituting a substantial loading of 7.2 wt%, are then immobilized on the 1T-phase MoS2 via Pd─S bonds to modulate the electronic structure and ensure a stable active phase. The resulting Pd1/1T-MoS2/C catalyst exhibits superior HER performance, featuring a low overpotential of 53 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2, a small Tafel slope of 37 mV dec-1, and minimal charge transfer resistance in alkaline electrolyte. Moreover, the catalyst also demonstrates efficacy in acid and neutral electrolytes. Atomic structural characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that the high activity of Pd1/1T-MoS2/C is attributed to the near-zero hydrogen adsorption energy of the activated sulfur sites on the two adjacent shells of atomic Pd.

Theoretical Study of Single-Atom Catalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Based on BiTeBr Monolayer

Developing an inexpensive and efficient catalyst for a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an effective measure to alleviate the energy crisis. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) based on Janus materials demonstrated promising prospects for the HER. Herein, density functional theory calculations were conducted to systematically investigate the performance of SACs based on the BiTeBr monolayer. Among the one hundred and forty models that were constructed, fourteen SACs with potential HER activity were selected. Significantly, the SAC, in which a single Ru atom is anchored on a BiTeBr monolayer with a Bi vacancy (RuS2/VBi-BiTeBr), exhibits excellent HER activity with an ultra-low |ΔGH*| value. A further investigation revealed that RuS2/VBi-BiTeBr tends to react through the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism. An electronic structure analysis provided deeper insights into this phenomenon. This is because the Tafel pathway requires overcoming steric hindrance and disrupting stable electron filling states, making it challenging to proceed. This study finally employed constant potential calculations, which approximate experimental situations. The results indicated that the ΔGH* value at pH = 0 is 0.056 eV for RuS2/VBi-BiTeBr, validating the rationality of the traditional Computational Hydrogen Electrode (CHE) method for performance evaluation in this system. This work provides a reference for the research of new HER catalysts.

Pt nanoparticles anchored by oxygen vacancies in MXenes for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

The improvement of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of nanomaterials is associated with the interfacial synergistic interaction and their hydrogen adsorption kinetics. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge to accelerate the proton transfer and optimize the HER kinetics by constructing Pt-supported heterostructures based on the hydrogen spillover phenomenon. Herein, oxygen vacancies on the surface of MXene nanosheets were constructed via a high-temperature annealing method, which was employed to anchor/stabilize Pt nanoparticles and fabricate a Pt/MXene heterostructure. EPR and XPS analyses verified the presence of oxygen vacancies, which could enhance the intrinsic HER activity of the MXene. The HER catalytic performance was investigated by taking into account the surface structure of the MXene affected by the annealing temperature, the concentration of Pt and the number of deposition cycles. Electrochemical results showed that Pt/MXene with higher utilization of Pt was obtained at 900 °C and 0.05 mgPt mL-1. The 0.05-Pt/MXene-900 obtained at deposition of 60 cycles in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution exhibited the optimized HER activity. The overpotential was 22 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and the Tafel slope was 42.41 mV dec-1. Furthermore, the accelerated HER kinetics was mainly due to the electron trapping ability of the MXene, small particles of Pt, as well as the enhanced charge transfer between the oxygen vacancies of the MXene and Pt. This strategy for constructing Pt-supported heterostructures based on the vacancy anchoring effects provides new ideas for the design of well-defined electrocatalysts toward the HER.

Innovative Catalyst Design of Sea-Urchin-like NiCoP Nanoneedle Arrays Supported on N-Doped Carbon Nanospheres for Enhanced HER Performance

Hydrogen (H2) stands as a clean energy alternative to fossil fuels, especially within the domain of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), offering prospective solutions to mitigate both environmental and energy-related challenges. In this work, we successfully synthesized a sea-urchin-like catalyst, specifically a nickel-cobalt phosphide nanoneedle array on N-doped carbon nanospheres (Ni0.5Co1.5P@NCSs), for efficient HER by a sequential hydrothermal and low-temperature phosphating process. The catalyst exhibits sea-urchin-like structures, offering a specific surface area of 298 m2 g-1 and consequently furnishing a greater abundance of active sites. Comparing with non-sea-urchin-like Ni0.5Co1.5P@CN catalysts, the Ni0.5Co1.5P@NCSs exhibit an overpotential of 163 mV at 10 mA cm-2, a Tafel slope of 60 mV dec-1, and a maintained current density of approximately 90% during 50 h of continuous electrolysis. Experiments demonstrate that the outstanding electrochemical properties of the Ni0.5Co1.5P@NCSs originate from nitrogen doping of carbon spheres, the distinctive morphology of sea-urchin-like nanoneedle arrays, and simultaneous enhancements in intermediate adsorption energy, charge transfer, and electrolyte diffusion channel shortening. This work emphasizes a preparation strategy for synthesizing an attractive electrocatalyst with a low cost and efficient HER performance.

Insight into the intrinsic activity of various transition metal sulfides for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an efficient approach to convert sustainable energy sources into clean energy carriers, H2. Although various transition metal sulfides (TMSs) have been reported as promising alternatives to precious metal-based catalysts, the top catalyst among TMSs remains unclear as there is a dearth of high-quality studies that provide a 'fair' comparison of the performance of these TMSs synthesized and tested under the same conditions. In this work, layered transition metal sulfides (MS2: MoS2, WS2, VS2) and non-layered transition metal sulfides (MxSy: FeS2, CoSx, NiS) were obtained by a straightforward hydrothermal method, and thus a comprehensive platform was established for the comparison of the intrinsic activity of these materials in the HER. Experimental results demonstrate that layered MS2 exhibits better performance than non-layered MxSy in acidic electrolytes, while CoSx and NiS can catalyze hydrogen evolution more effectively under alkaline conditions due to structural reconfiguration. MoS2 shows the best HER performance in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes, particularly in 1 M KOH solution. This work provides guidance for the optimal design of transition metal electrocatalysts, and structural engineering strategies can be used to further enhance their catalytic activity.
