Unveiling the Electrolyte Cations Dependent Kinetics on CoOOH-Catalyzed Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Constructing heterogeneous interface between Co3O4 and RuO2 with enhanced electronic regulation for efficient oxygen evolution reaction at large current density

Exploring effective strategies for developing new high-efficiency catalysts for water splitting is essential for advancing hydrogen energy technology. Herein, Co3O4/RuO2 heterojunction interface is construct through ion exchange reaction and pyrolysis. The as-synthesized Co3O4/RuO2-4 exhibits outstanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity at the current density of 100 mA cm-2 with a low overpotential of 276 mV, and remarkable stability (maintaining activity for 60 h at 100 mA cm-2). Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the electrons around the heterogeneous interface transferred from RuO2 to Co3O4, resulting in electron redistribution and optimization of energy barriers for OER intermediates. This unique composite catalyst structure offers a new potential for designing efficient oxygen electrocatalysts at large current density.

Alloy Reconstruction in Pyrolytic Bowknot-like Heteronuclear CoFe Clusters for Electrocatalytic Application

The construction of doped molecular clusters is an intriguing way to perform bimetallic doping for electrocatalysts. However, efficiently harnessing the benefits of a doping strategy and alloy engineering to create a nanostructure for electrocatalytic application at the molecular level has consistently posed a challenge. Here we propose an in situ reconstruction strategy aimed at producing an alloy nanostructure through a pyrolysis process, originating from bowknot-like heterometallic clusters. The Schiff base, denoted as ligand L1 (o-vanillin ethylenediamine), was introduced as a precursor to coordinate Fe and Co metals, thereby yielding a heteronuclear metal cluster [(FeCo)(L1)2O]CH3CN. Subsequently, a comprehensive investigation of the in situ reconstruction process [(FeCo)(L1)2O](CH3CN) → [(FeCo)(L1)2O] → [M-O-M/M-O] [CH3+/CH3O+/H2C═N/C2H5+/C4H4+] → [FeCo/Fe3O4/Fe2O3/Co3O4][carbon layer] led to the formation of MOx/CoFe@NC-700 during the pyrolysis. This process reveals that the metals Fe and Co in the clusters undergo partly in situ evolution into FeCo alloys, resulting in the successful preparation of MOx/CoFe@NC (M = Fe, Co) nanomaterials that leverage the advantages of both doping strategies and alloy engineering. The synergistic interaction between alloy particles and metal oxides establishes active sites that contribute to the excellent oxygen evolution (OER) and hydrogen evolution (HER) catalytic behaviors. Notably, these materials exhibit outstanding OER and HER properties under alkaline conditions, with overpotentials of 191 and 88 mV for OER and HER, respectively, at 10 mA cm-2. Investigation of the in situ conversion of Schiff base bimetal clusters into alloy materials through pyrolysis offers a novel strategy for advancing electrocatalytic applications.

Cation-Triggered Growth of Nanowires for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which occurs in a variety of energy-related devices, necessitates optimization of the reaction pathways for efficient and scalable deployment. Nevertheless, fully harnessing the advanced structure of synthetic electrocatalysts remains a significant challenge due to the inevitable surface reconstruction process during OER. Here we present an efficient and flexible method to control the surface reconstruction process by engineering an electrolyte containing trace Co2+ cation. This controllable reconstruction process enhances fast charge transfer, facilitates electroactive species transport, and exposes the inner active site, significantly improving the OER kinetics. An impressive 60% increase in current density at an applied potential of 2.2 V (vs RHE) confirms its remarkable contribution to the performance. The identification of cation-triggered reconstruction for the formation of a well-defined surface provides a novel insight into understanding electrolyte engineering and offers a viable pathway to address activity and stable concerns in electrocatalysts.

High-efficiency electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia via boron-doped hydroxyl oxide cobalt induced electron delocalization

Electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia is a promising alternative strategy for producing valuable ammonia. This prospective route, however, is subject to a slow electrocatalytic rate, which resulted from the weak adsorption and activation of intermediate species, and the low density electron cloud of active centers. To address this issue, we developed a novel approach by doping boron into metal hydroxyl oxides to adjust the electronic structure of active centers, and consequently, led a significant improvement in the Faraday efficiency upto approaching 100 %, as well as an impressive ammonia yield upto approximately 23 mg/h mgcat-1 at -0.6 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Experimental data in mechanism demonstrate that the doped boron play a crucial role in modulating the local electronic environment surrounding the active sites Co. In situ Raman and FTIR spectra provide evidences that boron facilitates the formation of deoxidation and hydrogenation intermediates. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations support the notion that boron doping enhances the adsorption capability of intermediates, reduces the reaction barrier, and facilitates the desorption of NH3.

Concerns on the Effects of Electrode Positions in Electrolyte Container for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Water electrolysis is currently a major technique to produce clean hydrogen, which is regarded as a promising and sustainable energy carrier. The efficiency of water electrolysis is highly dependent on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the anode. The evaluation of an OER electrocatalyst is frequently carried out on a three-electrode system in a container of electrolyte. Herein, we found that the electrode positions in the electrolyte container could significantly affect the data acquisition of OER performance. After a detailed investigation, we reveal that the difference of the OER activity of an electrocatalyst at a different position is originated from their different iRu drop and the gas diffusion resistance. For the first time, this work evokes concerns on the accurate evaluation of electrocatalysts regarding the electrode position. For fair comparisons and reliable results, it is strongly suggested to keep the electrode position unchanged in the electrochemical measurements. In addition, the establishment of a standard electrolyzer setup for electrocatalysis evaluation in the electrochemical community is also called for.
