Covalently linked pyrene antennas for optically dense yet aggregation-resistant light-harvesting systems

In this study we present a novel energy transfer material inspired by natural light-harvesting antenna arrays, zinc(II) phthalocyanine-pyrene (ZnPcPy). The ZnPcPy system facilitates energy transfer from 16 covalently linked pyrene (Py) donor chromophores to the emissive central zinc(II) phthalocyanine (ZnPc) core. Nearly 98% energy transfer efficiency is determined from the changes in emission decay rates between free MePy to covalently linked Py, supported by comparisons of photoluminescence quantum yields using different excitation wavelengths. A comparative analysis of ZnPcPy and an equivalent mixture of ZnPc and MePy demonstrates the superior light-harvesting performance of the covalently linked system, with energy transfer rates 9705 times higher in the covalently bound system. This covalent strategy allows for very high loadings of absorbing Py chromophores to be achieved while also avoiding exciton quenching that would otherwise arise, with the same strategy widely applicable to other pairs of Főrster resonance energy transfer (FRET) chromophores.

An overview on synthetic strategies for the construction of star-shaped molecules

Strategies for the synthesis of star-shaped molecules have been in high demand in the last decades due to the importance of those compounds in various fields. The distinctly different properties of these compounds compared to their linear analogues make them versatile building blocks for the formation of mesophases of interesting mesomorphic and photophysical properties. Moreover, the applications of star-shaped molecules as building units for dendrimers as well as in supramolecular host-guest chemistry have also been recently studied. The star-shaped molecules mentioned in this review are classified according to the central core as well as the type of side arms. The properties and applications of these compounds are described in the appropriate contexts. This report summarizes the recent advances in this area.

Tuning the photophysical properties of pyrene-based systems: a theoretical study

Recently new molecular systems based on the pyrene moiety were developed for photovoltaic applications. Here we present the results of a quantum chemical study focused on the effects induced by some different substituents on the electronic properties of pyrene, to obtain general hints for the molecular design of new pyrene-based systems. In particular, a series of electron-donating (hydroxy, amino, acetylamino) and electron-withdrawing (cyano, carbamoyl, formyl, ethynyl, ethenyl) groups were considered. Furthermore, in addition to the single pyrene molecule, two pyrene units linked by ethenylene, ethynylene, 2,5-thienylene, and ethynylene-p-phenylene containing chains of different lengths were taken into account. For all of the model structures presented, the ground state geometries have been optimized using the density functional approach, while the vertical transition energies were calculated using the time-dependent density functional theory. We will show that the tuning of the lowest electronic excitation energy (i.e., the HOMO-LUMO energy gap) as well as the localization of the spatial distributions of the frontier molecular orbitals (i.e., the nature of the electron-hole pair, generated by photon absorption) can be obtained through the analysis of the pyrene frontier molecular orbitals. This approach allows to evaluate the most suitable position of the substituents on the pyrene moiety giving rise to enhanced electronic effects also in function of their electronic nature. In this way, pyrene-structures with tailored electronic properties could be modeled. Our screening shows that promising candidates for photovoltaic applications could be molecular structures formed by two pyrene units joined/linked by a short conjugated bridge containing double or triple bonds (henceforth pyrene-linked dimers). As far as the single pyrene units are considered, the most significant reduction of the transition energy of the lowest optical electronic excitation is obtained with disubstituted pyrenes with push-pull character.
