Synthesis of graphene oxide supported copper-cobalt ferrite material functionalized by arginine amino acid as a new high-performance catalyst

Tripodal Triazine and 1,8-Naphthalimide-based Small Molecules as Efficient Photocatalysts for Visible-light Oxidative Condensation

Tripodal donor-acceptor (D-A) small molecules Tr-Np3 and Tr-T-Np3 consisting of triphenyl triazine and 1,8-naphthalimide, without and with a thiophene spacer have been synthesized. Their optical and redox properties were thoroughly investigated along with their utilization as photocatalysts in organic transformations. Compounds Tr-Np3 and Tr-T-Np3 showed broad absorption in the range of 290-480 nm in solutions and 300-510 nm in thin films. These tripodal molecules displayed wide optical bandgaps of (Eg opt ) 3.10 eV and 2.64 eV with very deep-lying HOMO energy levels (-6.60 eV and -6.03 eV) and low-lying LUMO levels (-3.50 eV and -3.40 eV). Appreciable electron mobilities of 5.24×10-4  cm2 /Vs and 6.14×10-4  cm2 /Vs were obtained for compounds Tr-Np3 and Tr-T-Np3 respectively by space-charge limited current (SCLC) measurements. Metal-free tripodal molecules Tr-Np3 and Tr-T-Np3 showed excellent photocatalytic abilities towards condensation of aromatic aldehydes and o-phenylenediamine followed by cyclization under visible light to yield benzimidazole derivatives that are of high medicinal value.

Efficient photocatalytic degradation of metronidazole in wastewater under simulated sunlight using surfactant- and CuS-activated zeolite nanoparticles

Hexadecyltrimethylammonium-bromide-activated zeolite nanoparticles coated with copper sulfide (ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS) was evaluated as a photocatalyst under sunlight for the degradation of metronidazole (MET). The surface and structural characteristics of ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS and other materials used in this study were analyzed using field emission-scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda pore size and volume analyses, and pH of zero charge test. ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS exhibited excellent surface and structural catalytic properties. For a comprehensive study of the degradation process, several parameters, such as the pH (3-11), MET concentration (10-30 mg/L), ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS dose (0.005-0.1 g/L), reaction time (5-200 min), and H₂O₂ concentration (50-200 mg/L), were optimized. ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS achieved 100% degradation efficiency when 10 mg/L MET was used under the optimum conditions: pH = 7, ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS dose = 0.01 g/L, and reaction time = 180 min. The degradation efficiency increased when the concentration of H₂O₂ was increased from 50 to 150 mg/L and decreased with further increase to 200 mg/L, indicating that the efficiency of MET degradation highly depends on the concentration of H₂O₂ in an aqueous solution. The degradation kinetics analysis revealed that the degradation is of the pseudo first-order. Thus, ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS proved to be an exceptional catalyst for the photodegradation of MET in aqueous media.

Magnetic CuNiFe2O4 nanoparticles loaded on multi-walled carbon nanotubes as a novel catalyst for peroxymonosulfate activation and degradation of reactive black 5

Novel copper-nickel ferrite nanocatalyst loaded on multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs-CuNiFe₂O₄) was synthesized and applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in the degradation of the reactive black 5 (RB5). The structure of the catalyst was well characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The MWCNTs-CuNiFe₂O₄/PMS system showed a high performance in the degradation of RB5 with a kinetic rate of 1.5-2.5 times higher than homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. Maximum degradation efficiency (99.60%) was obtained at an initial pH of 7, catalyst dosage of 250 mg/L, PMS dosage of 4 mM, the temperature of 25 °C, and reaction time of 15 min. Anion experiments emphasized that the presence of nitrate, carbonate, and phosphate in the solution reduced the degradation efficiency by producing reactive species with low oxidation potential. The RB5 degradation rate evolved with temperature, and the activation energy was obtained to be 44.48 kJ/mol. The mechanism of PMS activation and production of free radicals was proposed based on tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), ethanol (EtOH), and potassium iodide (KI) scavengers. Trapping experiments showed that both sulfate (SO₄^•-) and hydroxyl (^•OH) radicals are involved in the catalytic degradation of RB5. The effective treatment of real wastewater and tap water by the MWCNTs-CuNiFe₂O₄/PMS system requires a long reaction time. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis indicated that RB5 can be degraded via methylation, decarboxylation, hydroxylation, and ring/chain cleavage pathways. The stable catalytic activity after three consecutive cycles suggested that MWCNTs-CuFe₂O₄ is a novel reusability catalyst in PMS activation.
