Fe3O4@SiO2@CSH+VO3- as a novel recyclable heterogeneous catalyst with core-shell structure for oxidation of sulfides

Iron nanoparticles, with low toxicity and many active sites, are among the materials that not only reduce waste along with green chemistry but also increase the separation power and recover the catalyst from the reaction environment. In this study, first, the surface of iron nanoparticles was silanized, and in the next step, the complex of chitosan HCl.VO3 was placed on the surface of Fe3O4 (Fe3O4@SiO2@CSH+VO3-). This nanocatalyst is a novel, recoverable, and potent nanocatalyst with high selectivity for the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides. Various physicochemical techniques such as IR, XRD, TGA, SEM, EDX, mapping, TEM, and VSM were used to affirm the well synthesis of the catalyst. Oxidation of sulfides in the presence of hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant and in ethanol was catalyzed by the Fe3O4@SiO2@CSH+VO3-. All sulfoxides were achieved with high efficiency and in a short time. The notable privileges of this method include facile and economic catalyst synthesis, proper catalyst durability, great performance, simple catalyst isolation, good recovery capability, at least up to 5 times without an index drop in catalytic power.

Recent Progress and Emerging Technologies towards a Sustainable Synthesis of Sulfones

Sulfones play a pivotal role in modern organic chemistry. They are highly versatile building blocks and find various applications as drugs, agrochemicals, or functional materials. Therefore, sustainable access to this class of molecules is of great interest. Herein, the goal was to provide a summary on recent developments in the field of sustainable sulfone synthesis. Advances and existing limitations in traditional approaches towards sulfones were reviewed on selected examples. Furthermore, novel emerging technologies for a more sustainable sulfone synthesis and future directions were discussed.

Degradation of odorous sulfide compounds by different oxidation processes in drinking water: Performance, reaction kinetics and mechanism

Swampy/septic odor caused by various sulfides is one of the most frequently encountered odor problems in drinking water. However, even though it is much more offensive, few studies have specifically focused on swampy/septic odor compared to the extensively studied musty/earthy problems. In this work, four sulfide odorants, diamyl sulfide (DAS), dipropyl sulfide (DPS), dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and diethyl disulfide (DEDS), were selected to evaluate the treatment performance of different oxidation processes in drinking water. The results demonstrated that DMDS, DEDS, DPS and DAS could be oxidized effectively by KMnO_4, NaClO and ClO₂. The oxidation processes could be well described by the second-order kinetic model, in which k values of selected sulfides followed the order DMDS≈DEDS ≪ DPS≈DAS. As for the three oxidants, the order of reactivity was KMnO₄ ≪ ClO₂ < NaClO, which was also verified in raw water. The results of oxidation treatability, reaction kinetics and mechanisms confirmed that the characteristics of the central sulfur atom rather than the side chain is the decisive factor in controlling the oxidation rate and transformation pathway of sulfides. The transformation products and pathways were significantly different for the three oxidants. Sulfones (DPSO, DASO) were always formed by cycloaddition reactions during KMnO₄ oxidation, yet recombination reactions proceeded during ClO₂ oxidation and formed more products, such as MADS, DADS and EADS. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the differences in transformation pathways were caused by the variations in the activity of the oxidants and sulfides. Finally, NaClO was certified as the most effective oxidant for controlling sulfide odorants in drinking water treatment.

Acidic Functionalized Nanobohemite: An Active Catalyst for Methyl Ester Production

In the biodiesel production, acidic catalysts are ideally suitable for reacting with different oil sources at various free acid levels. On the other hand, the nanocatalysts can easily be propagated in the reaction medium and provide more accessible active sites for reaction. The aim of this work was to synthesize an acidic nanocatalyst based on boehmite nanoparticles then studying it to biodiesel production from soybean oil. Up to now, no reports were found on biodiesel production by this catalyst. After the synthesis and characterization of the catalyst, using response surface methodology (RSM), the optimized conditions for transesterification were 4.87 wt.% for catalyst dosage, 13:1 for the molar ratio of methanol to oil, 60 °C for reaction temperature, and 3 h for reaction time. At the optimal point, the production yield was 99.8 %. After six consecutive use of the catalyst, the yield dropped slightly (88 %). Consequently, the catalyst can be employed efficiently several runs in the production process.

Fe3O4@BNPs@SiO2–SO3H as a highly chemoselective heterogeneous magnetic nanocatalyst for the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides or sulfones

To achieve green chemistry goals and also to reduce the cost of catalysts as well as to avoid producing toxic wastes and show the importance of separation and recycling of catalysts from the reaction medium, in this work, we describe the preparation and characterization of magnetic acidic boehmite nanoparticles as a heterogeneous catalyst, which is called Fe₃O₄@BNPs@SiO₂–SO₃H. This catalyst works efficiently in the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides or sulfones in the presence of H₂O₂ as a green oxidant. It can easily be separated from the reaction medium by using an external magnet and it was recycled 6 times without loss of magnetic catalytic properties.

To achieve the green chemistry goals and importance of separation and recycling of catalyst from the reaction medium, Fe₃O₄@BNPs@SiO₂–SO₃H is introduced as a novel heterogeneous nanocatalyst for the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides or sulfones.
