Aerobic {Mo 72 V 30 } nanocluster‐catalysed heterogeneous one‐pot tandem synthesis of benzimidazoles

Anderson-type polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for selective oxidation of benzylic C-H bonds

Oxidative transformation of benzylic C-H bonds into functional carbonyl groups under mild conditions represents an efficient method for the synthesis of aromatic carboxylic acids and ketones. Here we report a high-efficiency catalyst system constructed from an Anderson-type polyoxometalate-based metal-Organic framework (POMOF-1) and N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) for selective oxidation of methylarenes and alkylarenes under 1 atm O2 atmosphere. POMOF-1 exerted a synergistic effect originating from the well-aligned Anderson {CrMo6} clusters and Cu centers within the framework, and this entailed good cooperation with NHPI to catalyze the selective oxidation. Accordingly, the reactions exhibit good tolerance and chemical selectivity for a wide range of substrates bearing diverse substituent groups, and the corresponding carboxylic acids and ketones were harvested in good yields under mild conditions. Mechanism study reveals that POMOF-1 worked synergistically with NPHI to activate the benzylic C-H bonds of substrates, which are sequentially oxidized by oxygen and HOO˙ to give rise to the products. This work may pave a way to design high-efficiency catalysts by integration of polyoxometalate-based materials with NPHI for challenging C-H activation.

Tetrahedral Keggin Core Tunes the Visible Light-Assisted Catalase-Like Activity of Icosahedral Keplerate Shell

In this work, the effect of Keggin polyoxometalates encapsulated in Keplerate {Mo₇₂Fe₃₀} shell (K shell) on the visible light-assisted catalase-like activity (H₂O₂ dismutation) of the resulting core-shell clusters PMo₁₂@K, SiMo₁₂@K, and BW₁₂@K was investigated. Superior photodismutation activity of PMo₁₂@K compared to that of K shell and two other core-shell clusters was discovered. The homogeneity of PMo₁₂@K and its improved oxidative stability, increased redox potential, and reduced band gap caused by a synergistic effect between the Keplerate shell and Keggin core seem reasonable to explain such a superiority. The light-dependent photocatalytic performance of PMo₁₂@K evaluated by action spectra revealed a maximum apparent quantum efficiency (AQY) at 400 nm, demonstrating the visible light-driven photocatalytic reaction. A first-order rate constant of 2 × 10^-4 s^-1 and activation energy of 108.8 kJ mol^-1 alongside a turnover frequency of 0.036 s^-1 and a total turnover number of up to ∼3800 approved the effective photocatalytic activity and improved the oxidative stability of PMo₁₂@K. A nonradical photocatalytic mechanism through a Fe-OOH intermediate was proposed. Thus, the structure, optical activity, and oxidative stability of a host Keplerate-type nanocluster can be tuned significantly by encapsulation of a guest, like "cluster-in-cluster" structures, which opens the scope for introducing new visible light-sensitive hierarchical nanostructures.

Cucurbit[6]uril-Supported Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanoparticles Catalyzed Green and Sustainable Synthesis of 2-Substituted Benzimidazoles via Acceptorless Dehydrogenative Coupling

A new composite, cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6])-supported magnetic nanoparticles, Fe₃O₄-CB[6], was synthesized via a co-precipitation method in air and fully characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, and vibrating sample magnetometry techniques. It has been found to be a highly efficient, economic, and sustainable heterogeneous catalyst and has been employed for the first time for the synthesis of a series of biologically important 2-substituted benzimidazoles from various benzyl alcohols and 1,2-diaminobenzenes under solvent-free conditions via acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling to afford the corresponding products in good to excellent yields (68-94%). The magnetic nature of the nanocomposite facilitates the facile recovery of the catalyst from the reaction mixture by an external magnet. The catalyst can be reused up to five times with negligible loss in its catalytic activity. All the isolated products were characterized by ¹H and ¹³C{¹H} NMR spectroscopy.
