Abstract
Four erbium(III) complexes with the fluoroquinolones enrofloxacin, levofloxacin, flumequine and sparfloxacin as ligands were synthesized and characterized by a wide range of physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques as well as single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The compounds were evaluated for their activity against the bacterial strains Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Xanthomonas campestris, which was higher than that of the corresponding free quinolones. The interaction mode of the complexes with calf-thymus DNA is via intercalation, as suggested by diverse studies such as UV-vis spectroscopy, DNA-viscosity measurements and competitive studies with ethidium bromide. Fluorescence emission spectroscopy revealed the high affinity of the complexes for bovine and human serum albumin and the determined binding constants suggested a tight and reversible binding of the compounds with both albumins.

Abstract
Resistance and severe side effects of classical chemotherapeutic drugs are major challenges to cancer therapy. New therapeutic agents and combination therapy are considered potential solutions that enhance the efficacy of the drug as well as reduce drug resistance. The success of a platinum-based anticancer drug, cisplatin, has paved the way to explore metal-centered anticancer therapeutic agents. Herein, the zeolite-Y-encapsulated Zn(II)Salmphen complex is synthesized using a flexible ligand approach. The Zn(II)Salmphen complex and its encapsulation within the supercage of zeolite-Y were characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-vis, fluorescence, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), NMR, and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) techniques. Elemental analysis, PXRD, and SEM, all together confirm the integrity of the zeolite framework after the encapsulation of Zn(II)Salmphen complex in it, and elemental analysis provides the Si/Al ratio and Zn content present. FTIR and XPS studies indicate the successful encapsulation of the complex. NMR and HRMS studies confirm that the Zn(II)Salmphen complex is dimer; however, within the supercage of zeolite-Y, it is expected to exist as a monomer. The extent of structural modification of the encapsulated Zn(II)Salmphen complex is intimated by electronic spectroscopic studies. The free-state Zn(II)Salmphen is a fluorescent complex, and even the encapsulated Zn(II)Salmphen complex, when taken in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), shows fluorescence. In comparison to cisplatin, encapsulated Zn(II)Salmphen complex displays comparable cytotoxicity (IC50 = 2.0 ± 0.5 μg/mL at 48 h) toward breast cancer cell line, whereas free Zn(II)Salmphen has better cytotoxicity (IC50 = 1.5 ± 0.5 μg/mL at 48 h). Importantly, elemental analysis has revealed that the IC50 value, if calculated only in terms of Zn(II)Salmphen within Zn(II)Salmphen-Y, is as low as 54.59 ng/mL, indicating a very high efficacy of the drug. Interestingly, a 48 h treatment with the encapsulated Zn(II)Salmphen complex shows no toxicity toward immortal noncancerous keratinocyte cells (HaCaT), whereas cisplatin has an IC50 value of 1.75 ± 0.5 μg/mL. Internalization studies indicate that zeolite-Y targets cancer cells better than it does noncancerous ones. Hence, cellular uptake of the zeolite-encapsulated Zn(II)Salmphen complex in cancer cells is more than that in HaCaT cells, resulting in the generation of more reactive oxygen species and cell death. Significant upregulation of DNA damage response protein indicates that DNA-damage-induced cellular apoptosis could be the mechanism of drug action. Overall, the zeolite-encapsulated Zn(II)Salmphen complex could be a better alternative to the traditional drug cisplatin with minimal effect on noncancerous HaCaT cells and can also be utilized as a fluorescent probe in exploring the mechanistic pathway of its activity against cancer cells.

Abstract
In the present study, synthesis of eco-friendly Cu-based metal oxides nanoparticles [CuO, Cu2O, and CuO&Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs)] without and with functionalization with Diethylene glycol (DEG) has been demonstrated. The synthesized NPs were screened for their ability to adsorb multiple heavy metal ions from an aqueous solution. Based on the maximum Cadmium (Cd+2) ion adsorption capacity, functionalized Cu2O (fCu2O) NPs were selected for the detailed characterization and batch studies. The average size of fCu2O NPs was found to be 57.4 ± 6.14 nm in comparison to NPs without capping (72.6 ± 5.19 nm). The experimental parameters viz. contact time, initial pH, and initial concentration were optimized, and the obtained results were interpreted using standard isotherms and kinetic models. The maximum Cd+2 adsorption on fCu2O NPs was observed at initial solution pH 7. The adsorption of Cd+2 was found to be decreased at acidic pH due to the protonation of functional groups present on the NPs surface. A maximum Cd+2 adsorption capacity of 204 ± 6.2 mg g-1 was obtained from the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The crystal structure of NPs was prepared and docked with the protein targets of selected soil microbes in order to determine their ecotoxicity. The obtained results showed that NPs exhibited low affinity towards protein targets in comparison to the standard used. It suggests that NPs have less impact on the functionality of soil microbes and are thus safe for their disposal into the soil micro-environment.

Abstract
N-formyl pyrazoline derivatives (3a-3l) were designed and synthesized via Michael addition reaction through cyclization of chalcones with hydrazine hydrate in presence of formic acid. The structural elucidation of N-formyl pyrazoline derivatives was carried out by various spectroscopic techniques such as 1H, 13C NMR, FT-IR, UV-visible spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. Anticancer activity of the pyrazoline derivatives (3a-3l) was evaluated against human lung cancer (A549), fibrosarcoma cell lines (HT1080) and human primary normal lung cells (HFL-1) by MTT assay. The results of anticancer activity showed that potent analogs 3b and 3d exhibited promising activity against A549 (IC50 = 12.47 ± 1.08 and 14.46 ± 2.76 µM) and HT1080 (IC50 = 11.40 ± 0.66 and 23.74 ± 13.30 µM) but low toxic against the HFL-1 (IC50 = 116.47 ± 43.38 and 152.36 ± 22.18 µM). The anticancer activity of potent derivatives (3b and 3d) against A549 cancer cell line was further confirmed by flow cytometry based approach. DNA binding interactions of the pyrazoline derivatives 3b and 3d have been carried out with calf thymus DNA (Ct-DNA) using absorption, fluorescence and viscosity measurements, circular dichroism and cyclic voltammetry. Antioxidant potential of N-formyl pyrazoline derivatives (3a-3l) has been also estimated through DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical and H2O2. Results revealed that all the compounds exhibited significant antioxidant activity. In silico molecular modelling and ADMET properties of pyrazoline derivatives were also studied using PyRx software against topoisomerase II receptor with PDB ID: 1ZXM to explore their best hits. MD simulation of 3b and 3d was also carried out with topoisomerase II for structure-function correlation in a protein. HuTopoII inhibitory activity of the analogs (3a-3l) was examined by relaxation assay at varying concentrations 100-1000 µM.

Abstract
In this study, two series of novel carbon monoxide-releasing molecules (CO-RMs) containing Co were designed and synthesized. The synthesized complexes were characterized by IR, ESI-MS, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopies. The antitumor activity of all complexes on HepG2 cells, Hela cells and MDA-MB-231 cells were assayed by MTT. IC50 values of complexes 1-13 were 4.7-548.6 µM. Among these complexes, complex 1 was presented with a high selectivity to HepG2 cells (IC50 = 4.7 ± 0.76 μM). Compared with iCORM (inactive CORM), CORM (complex 1) showed a remarkable activity against tumor cells owing to co-effect of CO and the ligand of COX-2 inhibitor. In addition, complex 1 increased ROS in mitochondria and caused a decrease of dose-dependent mitochondrial membrane potential against HepG2 cells. Complex 1 down-regulated the expression of COX-2 protein in western blot analysis. The molecular docking study suggested that the complex 1 formed a hydrogen bond with amino acid R120 in the active site of the Human cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). Therefore, the complex 1 could induce apoptosis of HepG2 cells through targeting COX-2 and mitochondria pathways, and it maybe a potential therapeutic agent for cancer.

Abstract
In this study, five new complexes containing deferiprone (dfp) and N,N-donor ligands [bipyridine (bpy), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and ethylenediamine (en)] were synthesized: [Fe(dfp)2(bpy)](PF6) (1), [Fe(dfp)2(phen)](PF6) (2), [Cu2(dfp)2(bpy)2](PF6)2 (3), [Ga(dfp)2(bpy)](PF6) (4), and [Fe(dfp)2(en)](PF6) (5). Characterization of these complexes was carried out through elemental analysis and FT-IR, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography was used to determine their structures. Whilst the polyhedron has a distorted octahedral geometry in 1, 2, 4, and 5, it adopts a distorted square-pyramidal geometry in 3. Interaction of these compounds with human serum albumin (HSA) has been investigated through electronic absorption and fluorescence titration techniques. Emission quenching was performed separately for each complex at three different temperatures and thermodynamic parameters were calculated using binding constants to better understand the power of different binding forces with the HSA. Results demonstrated that compounds interact strongly with the HSA with a static quenching mechanism. Our evaluation of the cytotoxicity of complexes against the breast cancer MCF-7 cell line showed that complex 2 presents a better cytotoxicity than the standard cis-Pt. Finally, using the AutoDock 4.2 program, simulations to analyze the mechanism of complex-HSA interactions and their binding mode were carried out. Results showed that the best binding mode is located in subdomain IB for 1, 2, and 4, in I/II for 3, and in IA/IIA for 5. Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
In this study, a total of 22 piece quinoline-3-carbaldehyde hydrazone derivative compounds were designed and synthesized, 2 of which were not original, their antimicrobial activities were determined with microdilution method and their in vitro cytotoxic effect was investigated in MCF-7 and A549 cells by MTT assay. When the activity results are examined, although the antimicrobial effects of quinoline derivatives, in general, are weaker than standard drugs; 3q5 and 3q6 against MRSA showed promising activity with MIC:16 µg/ml compared to reference drugs. Compounds generally showed weaker cytotoxic activity on the A549 and MCF-7 cell line. 3q12, 3q17 and 3q22 at 100 µM reduced cell viability to 59.28%, 76.24% and 72.92% on A549 cells, respectively. Compound 3q6, one of the most effective compounds against MRSA, formed a 2.10 Å long hydrogen bond between the quinoline nitrogen and ARG132 in the DNA topoisomerase IV active site (PDB: 3FV5). Theoretical ADME profiles of all compounds comply with Lipinski and other limiting rules. In addition, MEP analysis of 3q6, geometric optimization and molecular reactivity analysis were calculated with the 6-311G (d,p) base set DFT/B3LYP theory, and ΔE = ELUMO-EHOMO, which is a measure of the stable structure of the molecule, was calculated as 0.13377 for 3q6 and had the most stable electronic structure among all compounds.

Abstract
The Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+ and UO22+ polymer complexes of 5-(2,3-dimethyl-1-phenylpyrazol-5-one azo)-8-hydroxyquinoline (HL) ligand were prepared and characterized. Elemental analyses, IR spectra, X-ray diffraction analysis and thermal analysis studies have been used to confirm the structure of the prepared polymer complexes. The chemical structure of metal chelates commensurate that the ligand acts as a neutral bis(bidentate) by through four sites of coordination (azo dye nitrogen, carbonyl oxygen, phenolic oxygen and hetero nitrogen from pyridine ring). The molecular and electronic structures of the hydrogen bond conformers of HL ligand were optimized theoretically and the quantum chemical parameters were calculated. Elemental analysis data suggested that the polymer complexes have composition of octahedral geometry for all the polymer complexes. Molecular docking of the binding between HL and the receptors of prostate cancer (PDB code 2Q7L Hormone) and the breast cancer (PDB code 1JNX Gene regulation) was studied. The interaction between HL and its polymer complexes with the calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) was determined by absorption spectra. The antimicrobial activity of HL and its Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+ and UO22+ polymer complexes were investigated; only Cu(II) polymer complex (1) was specifically active against Aspergillus niger. It inhibited the fungal sporulation and distorted the fungal mycelia, which became squashed at a concentration of 150 μg/ml; transmission electron microscope (TEM) also showed a deactivation of autophagy in the treated A. niger cells via accumulation of autophagic bodies in vacuoles. The inhibition process of the prepared ligand (HL) against the corrosion of carbon steel in 2 M HCl solution was determined by various methods (weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM) techniques) are found to be in reasonable agreement. The mechanism of inhibition in presence of HL in carbon steel corrosion obeys Friendlish adsorption isotherm.
