A lithium‐organic framework as a fluorescent sensor for detecting aluminum (III) ion

A dual-function [Ru(bpy)3]2+ encapsulated metal organic framework for ratiometric Al3+ detection and anticounterfeiting application

In this work, a novel composite material (HPU-24@Ru) has been prepared by combining a blue-emission Cd-based metal-organic framework (MOF, [Cd₂(TCPE)(DMF)(H₂O)₃]_n, HPU-24) with a red-emission tris (2,2'-bipyridine) dichlororuthenium(II) hexahydrate ([Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺) molecule for ratiometric fluorescence sensing of Al³⁺ ions in aqueous medium and high-level dynamic anticounterfeiting application. The luminescence measurement results indicated that the fluorescence intensity of HPU-24 at 446 nm showed a red shift in the presence of Al³⁺ ions, and the new peak appeared at 480 nm and continued to increase with an increase in Al³⁺ ion concentration. Meanwhile, the fluorescence intensity of [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺ almost showed no change. The detection limit was calculated as 11.63 μM, which was better than that for the MOF-based Al³⁺ ions in some reported examples in aqueous media and achieved through strong electrostatic interactions between HPU-24@Ru and Al³⁺ ions. Moreover, owing to the particularity of the tetrastyryl structure in HPU-24, HPU-24@Ru showed intriguing temperature-dependent emission behavior. This unique structure provides the composite material HPU-24@Ru with attributes for high-level information encryption that make it difficult for counterfeiters to identify all of the right decryption measures.

A new NCDs@ZIF-90-based sensor: fluorescent "turn-on" detection of Al3+ ions with high selectivity and sensitivity

A new NCDs@ZIF-90 composite as fluorescence sensor was designed and prepared by encapsulation of N-doped carbon dots (NCDs) in metal-organic framework (MOF) ZIF-90 in one-pot synthesis. NCDs@ZIF-90 retained the crystal structure and high thermal stability of ZIF-90; meanwhile, it also displayed the good chemical stability. NCDs@ZIF-90 dispersion in ethanol exhibited selective "turn-on" fluorescence response towards Al³⁺. The other coexisting competing metal ions had no obvious influence on the sensing performance of NCDs@ZIF-90 for Al³⁺. The fluorescence intensity at 447 nm of NCDs@ZIF-90 dispersion in ethanol had good linear relation with the concentrations of Al³⁺ with a low detection limit of 3.196 μM. The fluorescence enhancement after the addition of Al³⁺ was attributed to the release of NCDs from the inside of ZIF-90 to ethanol solution. In addition, NCDs@ZIF-90 displayed good recovery in detection of Al³⁺ in water samples indicating its practical application capability. The high selectivity and sensitivity indicate that NCDs@ZIF-90 is a good candidate as a "turn-on" fluorescence chemosensor to identify and detect Al³⁺.

CdTe QDs@ZIF-8 composite-based recyclable ratiometric fluorescent sensor for rapid and sensitive detection of chlortetracycline

The residue problem in animal food products caused by the abuse of chlortetracycline (CTC) is one of the food safety issues that have attracted much attention. Herein, a composite was generated by embedding CdTe quantum dots (QDs) into ZIF-8 for ratiometric fluorescent analysis of CTC. With adding CTC, the green luminescence of CTC appeared under the sensitization effect of Zn²⁺ in ZIF-8, but the red luminescence of CdTe QDs was reduced by the inner filtration effect of CTC. On this basis, CTC was detected by the composite with a short response time of 1 min, and the limit of detection was calculated to be 37 nM that was 17 times lower than the maximum residue limit of CTC in animal food products (626 nM). Excellent recyclability of the composite was also observed, and CTC was consecutively measured at least six times. The composite was used to determine CTC in basa fish and pure milk with satisfactory recoveries (91.0-110.0%). Portable test strips were further manufactured and the visual determination of CTC was obtained. These results convictively demonstrate that CdTe QDs@ZIF-8 composite as a recyclable ratiometric fluorescent sensor achieves the rapid and sensitive measurement of CTC residue in animal food products.

Regioselective synthesis of 6-nitroindole derivatives from enaminones and nitroaromatic compounds via transition metal-free C-C and C-N bond formation

Few methods are known for the synthesis of nitroindole derivatives. A simple and practical Cs₂CO₃-promoted method for the synthesis of 6-nitroindole derivatives from enaminones and nitroaromatic compounds has been developed. Two new C-C and C-N bonds were formed in a highly regioselective manner under transition metal-free conditions.

Modulation of High-Spin Co(II) in Li/Co-MOFs as Efficient Fenton-like Catalysts

Developing high-performance catalysts toward the Fenton reaction is important for environmental protection and sustainable development, yet it is still challenging. The high-spin states of first-row transition metal atoms with tetrahedral coordination provide a flexible electronic environment to activate the catalyst and elevate its catalytic activity. As a type of material with adjustable structures, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent candidate catalysts as they can accurately regulate the coordination configurations of metal ions. In this paper, we investigate and summarize the direct formation of bimetallic carboxylate Li/Co-MOFs with tetrahedral coordination metal centers in a mixed H2O/polar organic solvent system. The induction of Li(I) ions is manifested in the generation of hydroxides during the dissociation of the Co(II) solvation structure to trigger the tetrahedral coordination behavior of Co(II). These Li/Co-MOFs containing high-spin Co(II) centers can serve as highly efficient Fenton-like catalysts for organics. This study provides a promising strategy for rational design of MOF-based catalysts with high-spin metal centers for application in environment governance.

Coordination Polymers Based on Highly Emissive Ligands: Synthesis and Functional Properties

Coordination polymers are constructed from metal ions and bridging ligands, linking them into solid-state structures extending in one (1D), two (2D) or three dimensions (3D). Two- and three-dimensional coordination polymers with potential voids are often referred to as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or porous coordination polymers. Luminescence is an important property of coordination polymers, often playing a key role in their applications. Photophysical properties of the coordination polymers can be associated with intraligand, metal-centered, guest-centered, metal-to-ligand and ligand-to-metal electron transitions. In recent years, a rapid growth of publications devoted to luminescent or fluorescent coordination polymers can be observed. In this review the use of fluorescent ligands, namely, 4,4'-stilbenedicarboxylic acid, 1,3,4-oxadiazole, thiazole, 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole, terpyridine and carbazole derivatives, naphthalene diimides, 4,4',4''-nitrilotribenzoic acid, ruthenium(II) and iridium(III) complexes, boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives, porphyrins, for the construction of coordination polymers are surveyed. Applications of such coordination polymers based on their photophysical properties will be discussed. The review covers the literature published before April 2020.

Integration of fluorescent probes into metal–organic frameworks for improved performances

Recent years have witnessed a rapid development of fluorescent probes in both analytical sensing and optical imaging. Enormous efforts have been devoted to the regulation of fluorescent probes during their development, such as improving accuracy, sensitivity, selectivity, recyclability and overcoming the aggregation-caused quenching effect. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as a new class of crystalline porous materials possess abundant host–guest chemistry, based on which they display a great application potential in regulating fluorescent probes. This review summarized the research works on the regulation of fluorescent probes using MOFs, with emphasis on the methods of integrating fluorescent probes into MOFs, the regulation effects of MOFs on fluorescent probes, the superiorities of MOFs in regulating fluorescent probes, and the outlook of this subject. It is desirably hoped that this review can provide a useful reference for the researchers interested in this field.

This review surveyed the research works for the regulation of fluorescent probes with metal–organic frameworks based on host–guest chemistry.

An efficient synthesis of 4,5-diaryl-3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one via a cesium carbonate-promoted direct condensation of 1-aryl-2-propanone with 1,1′-(arylmethylene)diurea

An efficient method for the synthesis of 4,5-diaryl-3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one by using 1,1′-(arylmethylene)diurea and 1-aryl-2-propanone as substrates was developed. The reactions proceeded efficiently in the presence of Cs₂CO₃ to give the desired products in moderate to good yields with wide substrate scope and good functional group tolerance, serving as an attractive alternative or complement to the previously reported methods for the facile assembly of biologically and pharmaceutically active 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones.
