Facile large scale synthesis of CuCr 2 O 4 /CuO nanocomposite using MOF route for photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and tetracycline under visible light

Multi-metallic MOF based composites for environmental applications: synergizing metal centers and interactions

The escalating threat of environmental issues to both nature and humanity over the past two decades underscores the urgency of addressing environmental pollutants. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as highly promising materials for tackling these challenges. Since their rise in popularity, extensive research has been conducted on MOFs, spanning from design and synthesis to a wide array of applications, such as environmental remediation, gas storage and separation, catalysis, sensors, biomedical and drug delivery systems, energy storage and conversion, and optoelectronic devices, etc. MOFs possess a multitude of advantageous properties such as large specific surface area, tunable porosity, diverse pore structures, multi-channel design, and molecular sieve capabilities, etc., making them particularly attractive for environmental applications. MOF-based composites inherit the excellent properties of MOFs and also exhibit unique physicochemical properties and structures. The tailoring of central coordinated metal ions in MOFs is critical for their adaptability in environmental applications. Although many reviews on monometallic, bimetallic, and polymetallic MOFs have been published, few reviews focusing on MOF-based composites with monometallic, bimetallic, and multi-metallic centers in the context of environmental pollutant treatment have been reported. This review addresses this gap by providing an in-depth overview of the recent progress in MOF-based composites, emphasizing their applications in hazardous gas sensing, electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA), and pollutant degradation in both aqueous and atmospheric environments and highlighting the importance of the number and type of metal centers present. Additionally, the various categories of MOFs are summarized. MOF-based composites demonstrate significant promise in addressing environmental challenges, and this review provides a clear and valuable perspective on their potential in environmental applications.

Phytoassisted synthesis of CuO and Ag-CuO nanocomposite, characterization, chemical sensing of ammonia, degradation of methylene blue

The elimination of hazardous industrial pollutants from aqueous solutions is an emerging area of scientific research and a worldwide problem. An efficient catalyst, Ag-CuO was synthesized for the degradation of methylene blue, the chemical sensing of ammonia. A simple novel synthetic method was reported in which new plant material Capparis decidua was used for the reduction and stabilization of the synthesized nanocatalyst. A Varying amount of Ag was doped into CuO to optimize the best catalyst that met the required objectives. Through this, the Ag-CuO nanocomposite was characterized by XRD, SEM, HR-TEM, EDX, and FTIR techniques. The mechanism of increased catalytic activity with Ag doping involves the formation of charge sink and suppression of drop back probability of charge from conduction to valance band. Herein, 2.7 mol % Ag-CuO exhibited better catalytic activities and it was used through subsequent catalytic experiments. The experimental conditions such as pH, catalyst dose, analyte initial concentration, and contact time were optimized. The as-synthesized nanocomposite demonstrates an excellent degradation efficacy of MB which is 97% at pH 9. More interestingly, the as-synthesized catalyst was successfully applied for the chemical sensing of ammonia even at very low concentrations. The lower limit of detection (LLOD) also called analytic sensitivity was calculated for ammonia sensing and found to be 1.37 ppm.

Dye Removal Ability of Pure and Doped Graphitic Carbon Nitride

Background:

Rapid escalation in textile, paper, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and several other chemical based manufacturing industries due to amplification in human requirements have proportionately contributed to the extreme contamination of water ecosystem, resulted from the discharge of toxic pollutants from industries. Effluents from textile industries are comprised of coloured dyes like Rhodamine B, Methyl Orange, Methylene Blue and phenolic compounds which deserve special mention owing to their non-biodegradable, carcinogenic and severe detrimental nature. Urgent needs to ameliorate this fast declining environmental situation are of immense necessity in current scenario.

Objectives:

Objectives: In this regard, graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) is a distinguished material for water purification-based applications because of its exclusive characteristics making it highly prospective for degradation of toxic dyes from water by catalysis and adsorption techniques. GCN has been a material of conspicuous interest in recent times owing to its two dimensional sheets like structure with favourable surface area, and cost-effective synthesis approaches along with high production yield. This article presents a detail study of different aspects of GCN as a material of potential for water purification. Through extensive literature survey it has been shown that GCN is an effective material to be used in the fields of application. Several effective procedures like catalysis or adsorption for removal of dyes from water have been discussed with their basic science behind.

Conclusions:

This systematic effort shows that GCN can be considered to be one of the most efficient water purifier with further advantages arising from its easy and cost effective large scale synthesis.

An effective CuO/Bi2WO6 heterostructured photocatalyst: Analyzing a charge-transfer mechanism for the enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline and organic pollutants

Over the past few years, industrial pollution has had a negative impact on aquatic life by releasing significant amounts of hazardous chemicals into the ecosystem. Therefore, it is imperative to develop photocatalytic materials with good photocatalytic activity and easy separation. Photocatalytic degradation has been employed for the removal of such contaminants using binary hybrid nanocomposites as photocatalysts. In the present study, binary CuO/Bi₂WO₆ (CuBW) nanocomposites with different loadings of Bi₂WO₆ (~5, 10, and 15 mg) were successfully constructed using a simple hydrothermal method and used as a potential photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) and methylene blue (MB) under visible-light irradiation. The structure, surface morphology, and optical properties were studied to investigate the formation of the heterostructure. Among the prepared samples, the CuBW nanocomposite containing the optimum content of Bi₂WO₆ (~10 mg) exhibited superior activity toward the photocatalytic degradation of TC (97.72%) in 75 min and MB (99.43%) in 45 min under visible-light illumination. Radical trapping experiments suggested that holes and •OH radicals were the dominant reactive species during the photocatalytic process. The photoelectrochemical results also confirmed the improved separation and transfer of electron-hole pairs at the interface of Bi₂WO₆ and CuO. Our results demonstrate that the binary CuO/Bi₂WO₆ nanocomposite has significant potential applications in the field of photocatalysis due to its enhanced separation of the photoexcited charge carriers and strong synergistic interactions.

Application of a novel biomimetic double-ligand zirconium-based metal organic framework in environmental restoration and energy conversion

The development of visible-light response photocatalysts with a high catalytic performance and long-term cyclic stability is of great significance in the field of energy and environmental protection. Inspired by photosynthesis, a novel three-dimensional coral zirconium-based metal organic framework (MOF) was synthesized using a double-ligand strategy. The optimal sample, Zr-TCPP-bpydc (2:1), (the ratio of tetra-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin to 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid is 2:1) shows an excellent photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, and the effects of the amount of photocatalyst, pH and concentration on the degradation rate were investigated under the optimum conditions. It has a high degradation rate of tetracycline (98.12% for tetracycline and 96.74% for ofloxacin), which is 2.11 times higher than that of single ligand Zr-bpydc (zirconium-based MOF containing only 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid). More importantly, it also has a good H₂ evolution rate (213.68 μmol g^-1h^-1) and CO₂ reduction (35.81 μmol g^-1h^-1). In addition, the intermediate pathway of degradation, photocatalytic enhancement mechanism and cycle stability were deeply studied by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and recycling tests. The synthesis of a three-dimensional biomimetic coral zirconium-based MOF material will provide guidance for the development of new, promising, and natural ideal photocatalytic materials.

A review of metal organic framework (MOFs)-based materials for antibiotics removal via adsorption and photocatalysis

Antibiotic abuse has led to serious water pollution and severe harm to human health; therefore, there is an urgent need for antibiotic removal from water sources. Adsorption and photodegradation are two ideal water treatment methods because they are cheap, simple to operate, and reusable. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent adsorbents and photocatalysts because of their high porosity, adaptability, and good crystal form. The aim of this study is to suggest ways to overcome the limitations of adsorption and photocatalysis treatment methods by reviewing previous applications of MOFs to antibiotic adsorption and photocatalysis. The different factors influencing these processes are also discussed, as well as the various adsorption and photocatalysis mechanisms. This study provides a valuable resource for researchers intending to use MOFs to remove antibiotics from water bodies.

A comparative study of ceramic nanoparticles synthesized for antibiotic removal: catalysis characterization and photocatalytic performance modeling

The heterogeneous photocatalysis process has been known to provide significant levels of degradation and mineralization of emerging contaminants including antibiotics. For that, nanoparticle CuCr₂O₄ (CCO) ceramics were successfully prepared via sol-gel (SG) and co-precipitation (CP) methods to obtain spinel with desired structural features and properties and also to improve the photocatalytic performances. The CCO crystallite phase was produced at 750 °C all ceramics, disregarding the synthesis route. CCO physical and chemical properties were checked by X-ray diffraction (XRD) with Rietveld refinement, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and diffuse reflectance solid (DRS). The XRD patterns demonstrated that the synthesized catalysts displayed a small crystallite size between 17.45 and 26.24 nm for SG and 20.97 and 36.86 nm for the CCO_CP samples. The observation by SEM and TEM of the nanopowders showed a typical morphology with comparable particle sizes for both synthesized routes (20-30 nm). SG agglomeration rates were higher, and particles stick together more efficiently considering the CP method, while the CCO_CP method led to a more significant porosity. Their photocatalytic and adsorption performances were examined for cefaclor (CFC) removal chosen as a target pharmaceutical contaminant in water. The results obtained by the methods differed since nanoparticles prepared by SG led to high photocatalytic activity. In contrast, a high CFC adsorption was observed for those prepared via the CP method, and that agreed with the findings of the characterization analysis. The kinetics of the adsorption process was found to follow the pseudo-second-order rate law. In contrast, the data of the photodegradation process were further found to comply with the Lagergren kinetic law. Nevertheless, the global reaction rate is probably controlled by the intra-particular diffusion of CFC, regardless of the elimination process.

2D–3D graphene-coated diatomite as a support toward growing ZnO for advanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue

In this work, a diatomite@graphene@ZnO (ZGD) photocatalyst was synthesized by chemical vapor deposition and hydrothermal methods and used for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue.
