Valorization of camelina oil to biobased materials and biofuels for new industrial uses: a review

Global environmental pollution is a growing concern, especially the release of carbon dioxide from the use of petroleum derived materials which negatively impacts our environment's natural greenhouse gas level. Extensive efforts have been made to explore the conversion of renewable raw materials (vegetable oils) into bio-based products with similar or enhanced properties to those derived from petroleum. However, these edible plant oils, commonly used for human food consumption, are often not suitable raw materials for industrial applications. Hence, there is an increasing interest in exploring the use of non-edible plant oils for industrial applications. One such emerging oil seed crop is Camelina sativa, generally known as camelina, which has limited use as a food oil and so is currently being explored as a feedstock for various industrial applications in both Europe and North America. Camelina oil is highly unsaturated, making it an ideal potential AGH feedstock for the manufacture of lower carbon footprint, biobased products that reduce our dependency on petroleum resources and thus help to combat climate change. This review presents a brief description of camelina highlighting its composition and its production in comparison with traditional plant oils. The main focus is to summarize recent data on valorization of camelina oil by various chemical means, with specific emphasis on their industrial applications in biofuels, adhesives and coatings, biopolymers and bio-composites, alkyd resins, cosmetics, and agriculture. The review concludes with a discussion on current challenges and future opportunities of camelina oil valorization into various industrial products.

One-Step Synthesis of Novel Renewable Vegetable Oil-Based Acrylate Prepolymers and Their Application in UV-Curable Coatings

With the rapid development of social economy, problems such as volatile organic compound (VOC) pollution and the excessive consumption of global petroleum resources have become increasingly prominent. People are beginning to realize that these problems not only affect the ecological environment, but also hinder the development of the organic polymer material industry based on raw fossil materials. Therefore, the modification and application of bio-based materials are of theoretical and practical significance. In this study, a series of vegetable oil-based acrylate prepolymers were synthesized by one-step acrylation using palm oil, olive oil, peanut oil, rapeseed oil, corn oil, canola oil, and grapeseed oil as raw materials, and the effect of different double bond contents on the product structure and grafting rate was investigated. Furthermore, the as-prepared vegetable oil-based acrylate prepolymers, polyurethane acrylate (PUA-2665), trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA), and photoinitiator (PI-1173) were mixed thoroughly to prepare ultraviolet (UV)-curable films. The effect of different grafting numbers on the properties of these films was investigated. The results showed that as the degree of unsaturation increased, the acrylate grafting number and the cross-linking density increased, although the acrylation (grafting reaction) rate decreased. The reason was mainly because increasing the double bond content could accelerate the reaction rate, while the grafted acrylic groups had a steric hindrance effect to prevent the adjacent double bonds from participating in the reaction. Furthermore, the increase in grafting number brought about the increase in the structural functionality of prepolymers and the cross-linking density of cured films, which led to the enhancement in the thermal (glass transition temperature) and mechanical (tensile strength, Young’s modulus) properties of the cured films.

Effect of High-Temperature Calcined Wheat Straw Powder after Lignin Removal on Properties of Waterborne Wood Coatings

The effect of adding wheat straw powder after lignin removal (WSPALR) and high-temperature calcined WSPALR on the hardness, adhesion, and resistance to impact, color difference, and mold resistance of waterborne coatings was studied. The results showed that the hardness was the highest of 6H when the concentration of WSPALR was 1.0%–2.0%. WSPALR and high-temperature calcined WSPALR had little effect on the adhesion and impact resistance of waterborne coatings, and the resistance to impact was about 10.0 kg cm. When both the concentration of WSPALR and high-temperature calcined WSPALR were 0.5%, the waterborne coating had the best adhesion of Level 1. The addition of high-temperature calcined WSPALR maintained the color difference of the original coatings. A high WSPALR concentration showed better mold resistance than a low concentration WSPALR, and the inhibition effect of high-temperature calcined WSPALR on Trichoderma was better than that of WSPALR. When the concentration of WSPALR calcined at a high temperature was 0.5%, it showed a better hardness of 4H, Level 1 adhesion, 10.0 kg cm resistance to impact, and 1.1 color difference of the waterborne coating. This work has important application value for mold resistance of wood coatings.
