Effect of the anionic-group/cationic-group ratio on the swelling behavior and controlled release of agrochemicals of the amphoteric, superabsorbent polymer poly(acrylic acid-co-diallyldimethylammonium chloride)

Effect of cationic monomer structure on the aggregation behavior of amphoteric acrylic polymer around isoelectric point

Amphoteric polymer can be used as retanning agent in leather manufacture. It is particularly useful in chrome-free tanning systems since it can regulate the charge properties of chrome-free leather and enhance the fixation of anionic post-tanning chemicals in leather. However, the aggregation and precipitation of amphoteric polymer retanning agents around the isoelectric point (pI) hinder their wide application. Herein, we synthesized five amphoteric acrylic polymers (AAPs) by free radical copolymerization with acrylic acid and five different cationic acrylic monomers. The effect of cationic monomer structure on the aggregation behavior of AAPs was investigated. The aggregation of AAPs in aqueous solution showed pH and concentration dependence. Light scattering analysis showed that Poly (AA-co-MAPTAC) and Poly (AA-co-DMAPMA) were in the shape of coiled linear flexible chains with small particle size (Rg 7.6 nm and 14.8 nm, respectively) near the pI. However, Poly (AA-co-DAC), Poly (AA-co-DMC) and Poly (AA-co-DMAEMA) were in the shape of hollow spheres and exhibited serious aggregation. Quantum chemical calculations suggested that the amide groups in the cationic monomers MAPTAC and DMAPMA enhanced the nucleophilicity of AAPs. Thus the corresponding AAPs could carry a large number of cationic charges to slow their aggregation when the pH just climbed over the pI. The results are expected to provide theoretical reference for the synthesis and widespread application of AAPs.

Macromolecular complexes of polyampholytes

The macromolecular complexes of random, regular, graft, block and dendritic polyampholytes with respect to transition metal ions, surfactants, dyes, polyelectrolytes, and proteins are discussed in this review. Application aspects of macromolecular complexes of polyampholytes in biotechnology, medicine, nanotechnology, catalysis are demonstrated.

Intra- and Interpolyelectrolyte Complexes of Polyampholytes

At present, a large amount of research from experimental and theoretical points of view has been done on interpolyelectrolyte complexes formed by electrostatic attractive forces and/or interpolymer complexes stabilized by hydrogen bonds. By contrast, relatively less attention has been given to polymer⁻polymer complex formation with synthetic polyampholytes (PA). In this review the complexation of polyampholytes with polyelectrolytes (PE) is considered from theoretical and application points of view. Formation of intra- and interpolyelectrolyte complexes of random, regular, block, dendritic polyampholytes are outlined. A separate subsection is devoted to amphoteric behavior of interpolyelectrolyte complexes. The realization of the so-called "isoelectric effect" for interpolyelectrolyte complexes of water-soluble polyampholytes, amphoteric hydrogels and cryogels with respect to surfactants, dye molecules, polyelectrolytes and proteins is demonstrated.

Facile access to poly(DMAEMA-co-AA) hydrogels via infrared laser-ignited frontal polymerization and their polymerization in the horizontal direction

pH sensitive hydrogels are fabricated via infrared laser-ignited frontal polymerization (LIFP), and LIFP in the horizontal direction is employed towards dye adsorption.

Synthesis and characterization studies of γ-radiation crosslinked poly(acrylic acid/2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid) hydrogels

Superabsorbent polymer (SAP) hydrogels were synthesized by copolymerization of acrylic acid and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid and their sodium salts. The effects of reaction variables were optimized. SAPs were treated with chemical reagents. The structures and the morphologies of untreated and treated SAP hydrogels were analyzed by different techniques. The swelling/deswelling kinetics of SAP hydrogels, pH and salt sensitivity were investigated. The results show that these samples imbibed about 4310±27 g/g in deionized water, 269±18 g/g in artificial blood and 288±11 g/g in artificial urine. The highest swelling, reversible pH-responsiveness and salt sensitivity of hydrogels widen their applications.

Controlled pesticide release from biodegradable polymers

Polymers have been widely used in agriculture for applications including controlled release of pesticides and other active ingredients. The ability to predict their delivery helps avoid environmental hazards. Macromolecular matrices used as carriers in controlled release of agricultural active agents, especially pesticides, are reviewed. The review focuses on the advantages and mechanisms of controlled release. It includes biodegradable polymers in agriculture, their manufacturing methods, and their degradation mechanisms and kinetics. The article also presents a critical account of recent release studies and considers upcoming challenges.

pH-dependent optical properties of a poly(phenylene ethynylene) conjugated polyampholyte

A poly(phenylene ethynylene) conjugated polymer (PPE-NMe(3)(+)-COO(-)) containing tetraalkylammonium groups and carboxylate groups has been synthesized by Sonogashira coupling. Due to the presence of the strong cationic and weak anionic pendant units, the polymer undergoes a pH-induced transition from cationic polyelectrolyte to polyampholyte due to deprotonation of the carboxylic acid units in basic solution. Studies of the pH dependence of the polymers' optical properties reveal changes in absorption oscillator strength and fluorescence quantum efficiency that are triggered by the transition from cationic polyelectrolyte to polyampholyte nature. Stern-Volmer fluorescence quenching of PPE-NMe(3)(+)-COO(-) with a negatively charged quencher 1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide-N,N-bis(methylsulfonate) (NDS) shows that the polymer fluorescence quenching is amplified at low pH where the polymer is a polycation, whereas the quenching efficiency is considerably less at high pH.
