Solution-Processed Flexible Transparent Electrodes for Printable Electronics

Flexible transparent electrodes (FTEs) have been widely witnessed in various printable electronic devices, especially those involving light. So far, solution processes have demonstrated increasing advantages in preparing FTEs not only in their mild operation conditions and high-throughput but also in the diversity in micropatterning conductive nanomaterials into networks. For the FTEs, both high transparency and high conductivity are desirable, which therefore create requirements for the conductive network by considering the trade-off relationship between the coverage and the micropatterns of the network. In addition, the conductive networks also affect the flexibility of FTEs due to the deformation during bending/stretching. Consequently, solution processes capable of micropatterning conductive nanomaterials including nanoparticles, nanowires/polymers, and graphene/MXene play a crucial role in determining the performance of FTEs. Here, we reviewed recent research progress on solution-processed FTEs, including the solution processes, the solution-processable conductive nanomaterials and the substrates for making FTEs, and applications of FTEs in flexible electronics. Finally, we proposed several perspective outlooks of the FTEs, which aim at not only the enhanced performance but also the performances in extreme conditions and in integration. We believe that the review would offer inspiration for developing functional FTEs.

Solvent Effect to the Uniformity of Surfactant-Free Salmon-DNA Thin Films

Fabrication of surfactant-modified DNA thin films with high uniformity, specifically DNA-CTMA, has been well considered via drop-casting and spin-coating techniques. However, the fabrication of thin films with pure DNA has not been sufficiently studied. We characterize the uniformity of thin films from aqueous salmon DNA solutions mixed with ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, and acetone. Measurements of thickness and macroscopic uniformity are made via a focused-beam ellipsometer. We discuss important parameters for optimum uniformity and note what the effects of solvent modifications are. We find that methanol- and ethanol-added solutions provide optimal fabrication methods, which more consistently produce high degrees of uniformity with film thickness ranging from 20 to 200 nm adjusted by DNA concentration and the physical parameters of spin-coating methods.

Automated solvent vapor annealing with nanometer scale control of film swelling for block copolymer thin films

Molecular self-assembly of block copolymers has been pursued as a next generation high-resolution, low-cost lithography technique. Solvent vapor annealing is a promising way of achieving self-assembled patterns from polymers with high interaction parameters, χ, or high molecular weights. Compared to thermal annealing, the assembly in a solvated state can be much faster, but the film swelling process is typically challenging to control and reproduce. We report the design and implementation of an automated solvent annealing system that addresses these issues. In this system the film swelling is controlled via local heating or cooling, which enables exceptionally fast and precise modulation of the swelling. The swelling of the polymer films follows preprogrammed annealing profiles with the help of a feedback loop that compares and tunes the film thickness with respect to the set point. The system therefore enables complex annealing profiles such as rapid cyclic swelling and deswelling. We show that the orientation of the pattern morphology and the amount of lattice defects are influenced by the used annealing profile. We demonstrate that optimized profiles significantly shorten the annealing time (<15 min) of high-χ and high-molecular weight poly(styrene-b-2-vinylpyridine).

Assembly of P3HT/CdSe nanowire networks in an insulating polymer host

Nanoparticles may act as compatibilizing agents for blending of immiscible polymers, leading to changes in blend morphology through a variety of mechanisms including interfacial adsorption, aggregation, and nucleation of polymer crystals. Herein, we report an approach to define highly structured donor/acceptor networks based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and CdSe quantum dots (QDs) by demixing from an insulating polystyrene (PS) matrix. The incorporation of QDs led to laterally phase-separated co-continuous structures with sub-micrometer dimensions, and promoted crystallization of P3HT, yielding highly interconnected P3HT/QD hybrid nanowires embedded in the polymer matrix. These nanohybrid materials formed by controlling phase separation, interfacial activity, and crystallization within ternary donor/acceptor/insulator blends, offer attractive morphologies for potential use in optoelectronics.

Development and Bioanalytical Applications of a White Light Reflectance Spectroscopy Label-Free Sensing Platform

The development of a sensing platform based on white light reflectance spectroscopy (WLRS) is presented. The evolution of the system, from polymer film characterization and sensing of volatile organic compounds to biosensor for the label-free determination of either high (e.g., proteins) or low molecular weight analytes (e.g., pesticides), is described. At the same time, the passage from single to multi-analyte determinations, and from a laboratory prototype set-up to a compact device appropriate for on-site determination, is outlined. The improvements made on both the sensor and the optical set-up, and the concomitant advances in the analytical characteristics and the robustness of the assays performed with the different layouts, are also presented. Finally, the future perspectives of the system, aiming for the creation of a standalone instrument to be used by non-experts, will be discussed.

Temperature-responsive properties of poly(4-vinylpyridine) coatings: influence of temperature on the wettability, morphology, and protein adsorption

Poly(4-vinylpyridine)-grafted brushes demonstrate a thermal response of their wettability (stronger than that for spin-coated films), surface morphology, and protein adsorption.

Effects of polythiophene surface structure on adsorption and conformation of bovine serum albumin: a multivariate and multitechnique study

Protein interactions with surfaces of promising conducting polymers are critical for development of bioapplications. Surfaces of spin-cast and postbaked poly(3-alkylthiophenes), regiorandom P3BT, and regioregular RP3HT are examined prior to and after adsorption of model protein, bovine serum albumin, with time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The multivariate method of principal component analysis applied to ToF-SIMS data maximizes information on subtle differences in surface chemistry: PCA reveals alkyl side chains and conjugated backbones, exposed for RP3HT and P3BT, respectively. Phase imaging AFM shows semicrystalline microstructure of RP3HT and amorphous morphology of P3BT films. A cellular-like pattern of proteins adsorbed on RP3HT develops with coverage to more uniform overlayer, observed always on P3BT. The amount of adsorbed protein, determined by XPS as a function of BSA concentration (up to 10 mg/mL), is ∼21% lower for RP3HT than P3BT (up to 1.1 mg/m(2)). Although PCA differentiates protein from polythiophene, relative protein surface composition evaluated from ToF-SIMS saturates rather than increases with amount of adsorbed BSA from XPS. This reflects ToF-SIMS sensitivity to outermost layer of proteins, enabling multivariate analysis of protein conformation or orientation. PCA distinguishes between amino acids characteristic for external regions of BSA adsorbed to P3BT and RP3HT. These amino acids are identified for P3BT and RP3HT as hydrophilic and hydrophobic, respectively, by relative hydrophobicity of amino acid side chains. Alternative identification with BSA domains fails, pointing to substrate-induced changes in conformation and degree of denaturation rather than orientation of adsorbed protein.

Control of single molecular nanodot patterns of phenyl azomethine dendrimers by statistical simulation

Precisely synthesized subnanometer particles of metals or metal oxides can be prepared using dendritic polyphenyl azomethines as the template. With a goal of their arrays to a surface using a simple and quick process, such as spin-casting, statistical analyses were applied to a nanodot array of the dendrimers to obtain the relationship between the experimental condition and the results such as size, spacing, or its standard deviations. The dot patterns of a single molecular dendrimer on a substrate were able to be predicted with numerical values of the experimental parameters associated with the spin coat (concentration of the dendrimer, physical properties of solvent, the spin coating recipe, temperature of the solution, relative humidity (RH)) as the inputs for the statistical analysis.

Quantitative evaluation of evaporation rate during spin-coating of polymer blend films: Control of film structure through defined-atmosphere solvent-casting

Thin films of polymer mixtures made by spin-coating can phase separate in two ways: by forming lateral domains, or by separating into distinct layers. The latter situation (self-stratification or vertical phase separation) could be advantageous in a number of practical applications, such as polymer optoelectronics. We demonstrate that, by controlling the evaporation rate during the spin-coating process, we can obtain either self-stratification or lateral phase separation in the same system, and we relate this to a previously hypothesised mechanism for phase separation during spin-coating in thin films, according to which a transient wetting layer breaks up due to a Marangoni-type instability driven by a concentration gradient of solvent within the drying film. Our results show that rapid evaporation leads to a laterally phase-separated structure, while reducing the evaporation rate suppresses the interfacial instability and leads to a self-stratified final film.

Breath figures in polymer and polymer blend films spin-coated in dry and humid ambience

We investigate effects of two spin-coating parameters, relative humidity (5% < or = RH < or = 80%) in ambient atmosphere and water content (3 wt % < or = f(H2O) < or = 20 wt %) in solution (rich in tetrahydrofuran), on the structure of breath figures (BF) formed in spin-cast films of polar poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and PMMA mixed with nonpolar polystyrene (PS). Film morphologies, examined with atomic and lateral force microscopy, are analyzed with integral geometry analysis to yield morphological BF measures. In PMMA, water added to solution has much stronger impact than that from moisture on formed BFs, which could be ordered (with conformational entropy S approximately 0.9-1.0). In PMMA/PS, BFs decorate exclusively polar PMMA domains, resulting in morphologies with two length scales (sub-micrometer BFs and domains >10 microm). This suggests a novel strategy for herarchic structure formation in multicomponent polymer films. In PS/PMMA, BFs are better developed than in pure PMMA spin-coated in identical conditions. These observations show that the air boundary layer facing the spin-cast polymer film (region) is more important than the ambient atmosphere.
