Investigating Solvent-Induced Aggregation in Edge-Functionalized Layered Silicates via All-Atom Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Molecular dynamics simulations can provide the means to visualize and understand the role of intermolecular interactions in the mechanisms involved in molecular aggregation. Along these lines, simulations can allow the study of how surface chemical modifications can influence nanomaterial assembly at the molecular level. Layered silicate clays have been of significant interest for some time, particularly with regard to their use in organic/inorganic nanocomposites. However, despite numerous reports on the covalent linkage of organic moieties via silanol condensation, the theoretical understanding of these systems has heretofore been limited to noncovalent interactions, specifically ionic interactions at the charged basal surfaces. Herein, a model for edge-functionalized layered aluminosilicate clay, based on the siloxane linkage, is presented. In addition to reproducing experimentally observed degrees of molecular aggregation of clay-linked perylene diimide derivatives with different terminal functional groups as a function of solvent composition, a molecular-level understanding of the role of van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding of the different end-groups on the aggregation state in different water/N,N-dimethylformamide mixtures is obtained. The reported model provides a means to simulate organic moieties covalently bound to the layered silicate edge, which will enable future simulations of nanocomposites and organic/inorganic hybrids based on this system.

Photochemical Methods for the Preparation of Complex Linear and Cross-linked Macromolecular Structures

In this contribution, the current state of the art is summarized and an overview of photoinitiating systems for both radical and cationic polymerizations and their potential application in the preparation of complex linear and cross-linked macromolecular structures are described. Recent relevant studies have been devoted to developing novel free radical and cationic photoinitiators having spectroscopic sensitivity in the near-UV or visible range. Photoinitiated controlled radical polymerization methods leading to tailor-made polymers with predetermined structure and architecture are briefly presented. Several synthetic methodologies for the preparation of epoxy and (meth)acrylate based formulations containing clay or metal nanoparticles are also summarized. The nanoparticles are homogenously distributed in the network without macroscopic agglomeration. Applicability to both free radical and cationic systems is demonstrated.

Insight into the Broad Field of Polymer Nanocomposites: From Carbon Nanotubes to Clay Nanoplatelets, via Metal Nanoparticles

Highly ordered polymer nanocomposites are complex materials that display a rich morphological behavior owing to variations in composition, structure, and properties on a nanometer length scale. Metal-polymer nanocomposite materials are becoming more popular for applications requiring low cost, high metal surface areas. Catalytic systems seem to be the most prevalent application for a wide range of metals used in polymer nanocomposites, particularly for metals like Pt, Ni, Co, and Au, with known catalytic activities. On the other hand, among the most frequently utilized techniques to prepare polymer/CNT and/or polymer/clay nanocomposites are approaches like melt mixing, solution casting, electrospinning and solid-state shear pulverization. Additionally, some of the current and potential applications of polymer/CNT and/or polymer/clay nanocomposites include photovoltaic devices, optical switches, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, aerospace and automotive materials, packaging, adhesives and coatings. This extensive review covers a broad range of articles, typically from high impact-factor journals, on most of the polymer-nanocomposites known to date: polymer/carbon nanotubes, polymer/metal nanospheres, and polymer/clay nanoplatelets composites. The various types of nanocomposites are described form the preparation stages to performance and applications. Comparisons of the various types of nanocomposites are conducted and conclusions are formulated.
