Transport Properties of Natural and Artificial Smart Fabrics Impregnated by Graphite Nanomaterial Stacks

In this work, we studied the transport properties (thermal and electrical conductivity) of smart fabric materials treated with graphite nanomaterial stacks–acetone suspensions. An innovative and easy method to produce graphite nanomaterial stacks–acetone-based formulations, starting from a low-cost expandable graphite, is proposed. An original, economical, fast, and easy method to increase the thermal and electrical conductivity of textile materials was also employed for the first time. The proposed method allows the impregnation of smart fabric materials, avoiding pre-coating of the fibers, thus reducing costs and processing time, while obtaining a great increase in the transport properties. Two kinds of textiles, cotton and Lycra^®, were selected as they represent the most used natural and artificial fabrics, respectively. The impact of the dimensions of the produced graphite nanomaterial stacks–acetone-based suspensions on both the uniformity of the treatment and the transport properties of the selected textile materials was accurately evaluated using several experimental techniques. An empirical relationship between the two transport properties was also successfully identified. Finally, several theoretical models were applied to predict the transport properties of the developed smart fabric materials, evidencing a good agreement with the experimental data.

Poly(ethylene-co-vinylalcohol)/Poly(δ-valerolactone)/Aspirin Composite: Model for a New Drug-Carrier System

The release dynamics of aspirin(ASP), used as a drug model, from the poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol)/poly(δ-valerolactone) (PE-co-VAL/Pδ-VL) hydrogel blend was controlled by varying the blend's degree of swelling through a gradual loading of Pδ-VL (hydrophobic polymer) in this copolymer matrix. To achieve this goal, a series of PE-co-VAL/Pδ-VL blends with different ratios was prepared through the solvent casting method, and the miscibility of this polymer blend was evaluated by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electronic microscopy methods. The tests of cell adhesion and growth on the PE-co-VAL/Pδ-VL specimens were performed using the 3-(4,5-demethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) method and the results obtained were the best performance in terms of cell viability, cell adhesion, and growth of the PE-co-VAL/Pδ-VL50 material. The dynamic mechanical properties of the prepared material were also examined by dynamic mechanical analysis; the results obtained showed a material having intermediary mechanical properties between those of the two components. On the basis of these characterizations, the blend showing the best performance, such as the PE-co-VAL/Pδ-VL50 system, was chosen as a carrier to study the in vitro control of the release dynamics of ASP from the ASP/PE-co-VAL/Pδ-VL drug-carrier system when administered orally, in which the influences of the ASP content and the degree of swelling of the PE-co-VAL/Pδ-VL blend were investigated. Based on the data obtained and the gastrointestinal transit time reported by Beltzer et al., it was possible to estimate the distribution of the in vitro cumulative ASP released in different digestive system organs regardless of the actions of any enzymes and microorganisms and select the best-performing drug-carrier system.

Epoxy Resin Catalyzed by Graphite-Based Nanofillers

Graphene stacks/epoxy nanocomposites were produced and characterized in order to analyse the effect of different graphene precursors on cure reaction of a model epoxy matrix. A kinetic analysis of the cure mechanism of the epoxy resin associated to the catalytical activity of the graphite based fillers was performed by isothermal DSC measurements. The DSC results showed that the addition of all graphite based fillers greatly increased the enthalpy of epoxy reaction and the reaction rate, confirming the presence of a catalytic activity of graphitic layers on the crosslinking reaction between the epoxy resin components (epoxide oligomer and di-amine). A kinetic modelling analysis, arising from an autocatalyzed reaction mechanism, was finally applied to isothermal DSC data, in order to predict the cure mechanism of the epoxy resin in presence of the graphite based nanofiller.

Graphene oxide as a catalyst for ring opening reactions in amine crosslinking of epoxy resins

The influence of different graphite-based nanofillers on epoxide ring opening reactions, as induced by amines for diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA), is studied.

Water-Assisted Production of Thermoplastic Nanocomposites: A Review

Water-assisted, or more generally liquid-mediated, melt compounding of nanocomposites is basically a combination of solution-assisted and traditional melt mixing methods. It is an emerging technique to overcome several disadvantages of the above two. Water or aqueous liquids with additives, do not work merely as temporary carrier materials of suitable nanofillers. During batchwise and continuous compounding, these liquids are fully or partly evaporated. In the latter case, the residual liquid is working as a plasticizer. This processing technique contributes to a better dispersion of the nanofillers and affects markedly the morphology and properties of the resulting nanocomposites. A survey is given below on the present praxis and possible future developments of water-assisted melt mixing techniques for the production of thermoplastic nanocomposites.

Cold-Curing Structural Epoxy Resins: Analysis of the Curing Reaction as a Function of Curing Time and Thickness

The curing reaction of a commercial cold-curing structural epoxy resin, specifically formulated for civil engineering applications, was analyzed by thermal analysis as a function of the curing time and the sample thickness. Original and remarkable results regarding the effects of curing time on the glass transition temperature and on the residual heat of reaction of the cold-cured epoxy were obtained. The influence of the sample thickness on the curing reaction of the cold-cured resin was also deeply investigated. A highly exothermal reaction, based on a self-activated frontal polymerization reaction, was supposed and verified trough a suitable temperature signal acquisition system, specifically realized for this measurement. This is one of the first studies carried out on the curing behavior of these peculiar cold-cured epoxy resins as a function of curing time and thickness.

Development and characterization of novel photopolymerizable formulations for stereolithography

Novel photopolymerizable formulations, able to photopolymerize with a dual mechanism (cationic and radical), were developed and characterized as potential resins for stereolithography (SL) process. The influence of the presence of organically modified boehmite nanoparticles on the properties of the photopolymerizable mixtures was also analyzed. The main properties required for a liquid SL resin are a high reactivity and a low viscosity. All of the experimental formulations produced, even in the presence of boehmite nanoparticles, are able to satisfy these significant requirements. Physical-mechanical and thermal properties of the photocured samples, obtained starting from the experimental formulations, were finally measured. The cured nanocomposite bars show a high transparency, confirming the good dispersion of the nanofiller in the polymeric matrix and possess improved glass transition temperature (Tg) and mechanical performances, compared to the unfilled system and to a commercial stereolithographic resin. These results suggest the possibility of using the novel nanofilled photopolymerizable suspensions in the stereolithographic apparatus to build, not only esthetical, but also functional prototypes.

Rotational Molding of Polyamide-6 Nanocomposites with Improved Flame Retardancy

The aim of this work was to develop polyamide-6/ organic-modified montmorillonite (omMMT) nanocomposites for the production of hollow parts by rotational molding. Particular emphasis was placed on the mechanical and flame retardancy properties needed for the fabrication of vessels for flammable liquids. The morphology of the melt compounded nanocomposites, produced by melt compounding, was investigated by X-ray diffraction measurements (WAXD), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) showed an exfoliated structure. Rheological measurements were used in order to verify whether the viscosity of materials was adequate for rotational molding. While thermomechanical analysis has revealed that neat PA6 and its nanocomposites were not suitable for rotational molding, due to the very low thermal stability of the polymer, the addition of a thermal stabilizer, shifted the onset of degradation to higher temperatures, thus widening the processing window of both PA6 and PA6 nanocomposites. Large-scale vessel prototypes were obtained by rotational molding of thermo-stabilized PA6 and its nanocomposites, and samples extracted from the rotomolded parts were characterized with respect to physical and mechanical properties. It was found that the PA6 nanocomposites exhibited significant improvements at cone calorimeter tests in comparison with neat PA6.

Characterization of Nanocomposites by Thermal Analysis

In materials research, the development of polymer nanocomposites (PN) is rapidly emerging as a multidisciplinary research field with results that could broaden the applications of polymers to many different industries. PN are polymer matrices (thermoplastics, thermosets or elastomers) that have been reinforced with small quantities of nano-sized particles, preferably characterized by high aspect ratios, such as layered silicates and carbon nanotubes. Thermal analysis (TA) is a useful tool to investigate a wide variety of properties of polymers and it can be also applied to PN in order to gain further insight into their structure. This review illustrates the versatile applications of TA methods in the emerging field of polymer nanomaterial research, presenting some examples of applications of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and thermal mechanical analysis (TMA) for the characterization of nanocomposite materials.

Development and Characterization of Amorphous Thermoplastic Matrix Graphene Nanocomposites

The aim of the present work is the development of amorphous thermoplastic matrix nanocomposites based on graphite nanoparticles. Different types of graphite were used, including unmodified graphite, graphene nanoplatelets and graphite intercalation compounds. Graphite intercalation compounds were subjected to thermal treatment to attain exfoliation of the nanofiller. The exfoliation process was studied by means of thermal analysis. The nanofillers and nanocomposites were characterized by means of X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis. The nanocomposites were further characterized by means of mechanical and dielectric analysis. The flammability of the nanocomposites was also analyzed. Results obtained indicate that addition of the nanofiller allows improving the proprieties of the amorphous thermoplastic matrix. The effect of the degree of dispersion of the nanofiller is particularly relevant for the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites, whereas no direct correlation between degree of dispersion and mechanical properties can be observed.
