Removal of cadmium ions from synthetic aqueous solutions with a novel nanosulfonated poly(glycidyl methacrylate) cation exchanger: Kinetic and equilibrium studies

Development of Azo Dye Immobilized Sulfonated Poly (Glycidyl Methacrylate) Polymer Composite as Novel Adsorbents for Water Treatment Applications: Methylene Blue Immobilization Isotherm, Kinetic, Thermodynamic, and Simulations Studies

Methylene blue (MB) immobilized onto a sulfonated poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (SPGMA) polymer composite has been developed as a novel adsorbent for water treatment applications. The MB adsorptions onto sulfonated poly(glycidyl methacrylate) polymer characters have been studied. The adsorption isotherms, namely Langmuir and Freundlich, have been investigated. Other isotherm models. As a compromise between the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models, such as the D-R isotherm and the Temkin isotherm, have been compared. The results indicated that the adsorption process followed the Freundlich isotherm model, indicating heterogeneous surface site energies and multi-layer levels of sorption. This study selected three linear kinetic models, namely pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and Elovich, to describe the MB sorption process using SPGMA negatively charged nanoparticles (430 nm). The obtained data revealed that the adsorption process obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, suggesting that the rate-limiting step in these sorption processes may be chemisorption. Furthermore, the thermodynamic parameters have been evaluated. Moreover, the interaction of the MB molecules with SPGMA nanoparticles has been simulated using the governing equation that describes ion exchange resin derived from Nernst-Plank equations between two ion species. Finally, the developed MB-SPGMA composite adsorbent (27 mg/g) wastested for the first time for the removal of Cr⁶⁺ ions and Mn⁷⁺ metal ions from dichromate and permanganate-contaminated waters under mild adsorption conditions, opening a new field of multiuse of the same adsorbent in the removal of more than one contaminant.

Methylene blue azo dye (MB) immobilized onto Poly (glycidyl methacrylate-Co-methyl methacrylate), (PGMA-co-PMMA), and sulphonated Poly (glycidyl methacrylate-Co-methyl methacrylate), (SPGMA-co-PMMA), polymers composites have been developed as novel adsorbents for water treatment applications. The effect of copolymer composition and sulphonation on the MB content has been studied. Maximum MB content was correlated to the Polyglycidyl methacrylate content for both native and sulphonated copolymers. Furthermore, the effect of the adsorption conditions on the MB content was studied. Sulfonated Poly (glycidyl methacrylate; SPGMA) was the most efficient formed composite with the highest MB content. The developed composites’ chemical structure and morphology were characterized using characterization tools such as particle size, FTIR, TGA, and SEM analyses. The developed MB-SPGMA composite adsorbent (27 mg/g), for the first time, was tested for the removal of Cr (VI) ions and Mn (VII) metal ions from dichromate and permanganate contaminated waters under mild adsorption conditions, opening a new field of multiuse of the same adsorbent in the removal of more than one contaminants.

Preparation of the Carbonized Zif−8@PAN Nanofiber Membrane for Cadmium Ion Adsorption

The zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF−8)@polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber membrane was prepared and carbonized for heavy metal cadmium ion (Cd²⁺) adsorption in aqueous medium. Zinc oxide (ZnO) was first sputtered onto the surface of the PAN electrospun nanofiber membrane to provide a metal ion source. Then, the ZIF−8@PAN nanofiber membrane was prepared via in situ solvothermal reaction and carbonized in a tube furnace at 900 °C under a N₂ atmosphere to enhance adsorption performance. The synthesized ZIF−8 particles with polyhedral structure were uniformly immobilized on the surface of the PAN electrospun nanofiber membrane. After being heated at 900 °C, the polygonal ZIF−8 shrank, and the carbonized ZIF−8@PAN nanofiber membrane was obtained. Compared with the nanofiber membrane without being carbonized, the adsorption capacity of the carbonized ZIF−8@PAN nanofiber membrane reached 102 mg L⁻¹, and its Cd²⁺ adsorption efficiency could be more than 90% under the adsorption temperature of 35 °C and solution of pH = 7.5 conditions. According to the adsorption thermodynamics analysis, the Cd²⁺ adsorption process of the carbonized ZIF−8@PAN nanofiber membrane was spontaneous. The whole Cd²⁺ adsorption process was more suitably described by the pseudo second-order adsorption kinetics model, indicating that there exists a chemical adsorption mechanism besides physical adsorption.

A Review of Adsorbents for Heavy Metal Decontamination: Growing Approach to Wastewater Treatment

Heavy metal is released from many industries into water. Before the industrial wastewater is discharged, the contamination level should be reduced to meet the recommended level as prescribed by the local laws of a country. They may be poisonous or cancerous in origin. Their presence does not only damage people, but also animals and vegetation because of their mobility, toxicity, and non-biodegradability into aquatic ecosystems. The review comprehensively discusses the progress made by various adsorbents such as natural materials, synthetic, agricultural, biopolymers, and commercial for extraction of the metal ions such as Ni2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, As2+ and Zn2+ along with their adsorption mechanisms. The adsorption isotherm indicates the relation between the amount adsorbed by the adsorbent and the concentration. The Freundlich isotherm explains the effective physical adsorption of the solute particle from the solution on the adsorbent and Langmuir isotherm gives an idea about the effect of various factors on the adsorption process. The adsorption kinetics data provide valuable insights into the reaction pathways, the mechanism of the sorption reaction, and solute uptake. The pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models were applied to describe the sorption kinetics. The presented information can be used for the development of bio-based water treatment strategies.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Malachite Green Dye from Aqueous Solution Using Environmentally Compatible Ag/ZnO Polymeric Nanofibers

An efficient, environmentally compatible and highly porous, silver surface-modified photocatalytic zinc oxide/cellulose acetate/ polypyrrole ZnO/CA/Ppy hybrid nanofibers matrix was fabricated using an electrospinning technique. Electrospinning parameters such as solution flow rate, applied voltage and the distance between needles to collector were optimized. The optimum homogenous and uniform ZnO/CA/Ppy polymeric composite nanofiber was fabricated through the dispersion of 0.05% wt ZnO into the dissolved hybrid polymeric solution with an average nanofiber diameter ranged between 125 and 170 nm. The fabricated ZnO-polymeric nanofiber was further surface-immobilized with silver nanoparticles to enhance its photocatalytic activity through the reduction of the nanofiber bandgap. A comparative study between ZnO polymeric nanofiber before and after silver immobilization was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of the two different prepared nanofibers before and after nanosilver immobilization for malachite green (MG) dye was compared against various experimental parameters. The optimum degradation efficiency of nanosilver surface-modified ZnO-polymeric nanofibers was recorded as 93.5% for malachite green dye after 1 h compared with 63% for ZnO-polymeric nanofibers.

Novel eco-friendly electrospun nanomagnetic zinc oxide hybridized PVA/alginate/chitosan nanofibers for enhanced phenol decontamination

In the current study, poly(vinyl alcohol)/alginate/chitosan (PVA/Alg/CS) composite nanofiber was immobilized with six different ratios of nanomagnetic zinc oxide (M-ZnO) (0 wt%, 0.2 wt%, 0.4 wt%, 0.6 wt%, 0.8 wt%, and 1 wt%) via the electrospinning technique. The various fabricated composite (M-6) nanofibers were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical testing machine, and optical contact angle measurement. The fabricated composite nanofibers were applied for the adsorption of phenol from aqueous solutions. The 1.0 wt% M-ZnO/PVA/Alg/CS composite nanofibers were selected as the best phenol adsorbent with removal percentage of 84.22%. The influence of different processing parameter such as contact time, composite nanofiber dosage, pH, initial pollutant concentration, and temperature were examined. Increasing nanofiber dosage and the solution temperature was found to enhance the phenol adsorption onto the prepared nanocomposites. The maximum percentage of phenol removal was achieved at 84.22% after 90 min. Meanwhile, the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity (at pH = 5.0) was estimated to be 10.03 mg g^-1 at 25 °C. Kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies were designated to proof the endothermic, spontaneous, and thermodynamically nature of the phenol adsorption process. These outcomes indicate the effectiveness of the fabricated M-ZnO/PVA/Alg/CS nanofibers as adsorbent materials for phenol from aqueous solutions.

Eco-friendly magnetic activated carbon nano-hybrid for facile oil spills separation

This work focuses mainly on environmental concern and protection through providing beneficial use of waste biomass from water hyacinth to produce economical nano-magnetic adsorbent material-efficient for facile oil spill separation via an external magnetic field. The water hyacinth roots showed higher oil spills adsorption affinity of 2.2 g/g compared with 1.2 g/g for shoots. Nano-activated carbon was successfully extracted from the roots of water hyacinth after alkaline activation and followed by zinc chloride treatment before its carbonization. Nano-magnetite was induced into the activated carbonized nanomaterials to synthesized nano-magnetic activated carbon hybrid material (NMAC). X-ray diffraction elucidated the crystalline nature of both extracted activated carbon from water hyacinth and its magnetic hybrid material. Scanning electron microscopic micrographs implied the nano-size of both prepared activated carbon and the magnetite hybrid materials. The magnetic properties of the fabricated nano-magnetic activated carbon were evaluated using the vibrating sample magnetometer. The magnetic nano-hybrid material recorded a maximum oil adsorption affinity of 30.2 g oil/g. The optimum oil spill of 80% was established after 60 min in the presence of 1 g/L of magnetic nano-hybrid. The magnetic nano-hybrid material that absorbs oil spills was separated from the treatment media easily using an external magnetic field.

Adsorption Profile of Basic Dye onto Novel Fabricated Carboxylated Functionalized Co-Polymer Nanofibers

Acrylonitrile-Styrene co-polymer was prepared by solution polymerization and fabricated into nanofibers using the electrospinning technique. The nanofiber polarization was enhanced through its surface functionalization with carboxylic acid groups by simple chemical modification. The carboxylic groups' presence was dedicated using the FT-IR technique. SEM showed that the nanofiber attains a uniform and porous structure. The equilibrium and kinetic behaviors of basic violet 14 dye sorption onto the nanofibers were examined. Both Langmuir and Temkin models are capable of expressing the dye sorption process at equilibrium. The intraparticle diffusion and Boyd kinetic models specified that the intraparticle diffusion step was the main decolorization rate controlling the process.

Production of Biodiesel from Waste Vegetable Oil via KM Micromixer

The production of biodiesel from waste vegetable oils through its pretreatment followed by transesterification process in presence of methanol was investigated using a KM micromixer reactor. The parameters affecting biodiesel production process such as alcohol to oil molar ratio, catalyst concentration, the presence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) as a cosolvent, and the volumetric flow rates of inlet fluids were optimized. The properties of the produced biodiesel were compared with its parent waste oil through different characterization techniques. The presence of methyl ester groups at the produced biodiesel was confirmed using both the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and the infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Moreover, the thermal analysis of the produced biodiesel and the comparable waste oil indicated that the product after the transesterification process began to vaporize at 120°C which makes it lighter than its parent oil which started to vaporize at around 300°C. The maximum biodiesel production yield of 97% was recorded using 12 : 1 methanol to oil molar ratio in presence of both 1% NaOH and THF/methanol volume ratio 0.3 at 60 mL/h flow rate.

Ion Exchange Behaviors of Ca(II) and Mg(II) on Lewatit MonoPlus TP 207 and TP 208 Chelating Resins

The protonation process, the adsorption equilibrium process, the adsorption isotherms and the adsorption kinetics of adsorbing Ca(II) and Mg(II) onto Lewatit MonoPlus TP 207 and TP 208 chelating resins were studied using the pH titration method and batch experimental method. By omitting the ionic charges, first protonation constants, second protonation constants and equilibrium constants were determined. The adsorption behaviors were found to be dependent on contact time, pH, temperature and initial concentrations. The experimental adsorption isotherms were fitted using both the Freundlich and Langmuir models. The adsorption kinetics was described by means of the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The adsorption mechanism was found to involve intra-particle diffusion and film diffusion, where both were found to be the rate control steps.

Heavy metal ion adsorption behavior in nitrogen-doped magnetic carbon nanoparticles: isotherms and kinetic study

To clarify the heavy metal adsorption mechanism of nitrogen-doped magnetic carbon nanoparticles (N-MCNPs), adsorption capacity was investigated from the adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics points of view. The obtained results showed that the equilibrium adsorption behavior of Cr(3+) ion onto the N-MCNPs can be applied to the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetics. It indicated that the fabricated N-MCNPs had the homogenous surface for adsorption and all adsorption sites had equal adsorption energies. Furthermore, the adsorption onto N-MCNPs taken place through a chemical process involving the valence forces. According to the thermodynamics, the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic in nature which means that the adsorption capacity increases with increasing temperature due to the enhanced mobility of adsorbate molecules. The effects of the solution pH and the species of heavy metal ion on the adsorption uptake were also studied. The synthesized N-MCNPs exhibited an enhanced adsorption capacity for the heavy metal ions due to the high surface area and large amount of nitrogen contents.
