Thriving artificial underwater drag-reduction materials inspired from aquatic animals: progresses and challenges

In the past decades, drag-reduction surfaces have attracted more and more attention due to their potentiality and wide applications in various fields such as traffic, energy transportation, agriculture, textile industry, and military. However, there are still some drag-reduction materials that need to be deeply explored. Fortunately, natural creatures always have the best properties after long-term evolution; aquatic organisms have diversified surface microstructures and drag-reducing materials, which provide design templates for the development of thriving artificial underwater drag-reduction materials. Aquatic animals are tamed by the current while fighting against the water, and thus have excellent drag reduction that is unparalleled in water. Inspired by biological principles, using aquatic animals as a bionic object to develop and reduce frictional resistance in fluids has attracted more attention in the past few years. More and more aquatic animals bring new inspiration for drag-reduction surfaces and a tremendous amount of research effort has been put into the study of surface drag-reduction, with an aim to seek the surface structure with the best drag-reduction effect and explore the drag-reduction mechanism. This present paper reviews the research on drag-reduction surfaces inspired by aquatic animals, including sharks, dolphins, and other aquatic animals. Aquatic animals as bionic objects are described in detail, with a discussion on the drag-reduction mechanism and drag-reduction effect to understand the development of underwater drag-reduction fully. In bionic manufacturing, the effective combination of various preparation methods is summarized. Moreover, bionic surfaces are briefly explained in terms of traffic, energy sources, sports, and agriculture. In the end, both existing problems in bionic research and future research prospects are proposed. This paper may provide a better and more comprehensive understanding of the current research status of aquatic animals-inspired drag reduction.

Plant leaves as natural green scaffolds for palladium catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions

This work presents a novel approach of using natural plant leaf surfaces having intricate hierarchical structures as scaffolds for Pd nanoparticles and demonstrated it as a Green dip catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions in water. The influence of the topographical texture of the plant leaves on the deposition and catalytic properties of Pd nanoparticles are presented and discussed. The catalytic activity can be correlated to the surface texture of the leaves, wherein it has been found that the micro/nanostructures present on the surface strongly influence the assembly and entrapment of the nanoparticles, and thereby control aggregation and leaching of the catalysts. This approach can provide insights for the future design and fabrication of bioinspired supports for catalysis, based on replication of leaf surfaces.

RECENT DRAG REDUCTION DEVELOPMENTS DERIVED FROM DIFFERENT BIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONAL SURFACES: A REVIEW

Reducing energy consumption and protecting the environment has always been becoming the pursing goal and object for mankind, especially in the past several decades. Our living environment is all surrounded by the fluids, and the friction in turbulence has progressively developed into the important proportion of energy consumption. Therefore, how to realize the drag reduction in turbulence has turned into the imperative issue to be resolved, and many scholars have made great contributions in the field with achieving so many profits. In this paper, three different typical biological functional surfaces including sharkskin, lotus leaf and dolphin skin are reviewed and generalized systematically and comprehensively, the drag reduction mechanisms based on boundary layer control are generalized. The paper will enable the potential readers to better understand the recent progresses in exploring drag reduction technologies in turbulence, with improving the comprehension of the drag reduction mechanism and extending the relevant technologies into more applications.

INFLUENCE OF MORPHOLOGY FOR DRAG REDUCTION EFFECT OF SHARKSKIN SURFACE

Through millions of years' natural selection, creature has formed their own unique functional surfaces. Shark is one of the fastest animals in the ocean, which is well known for "sharkskin effect". Sharkskin surface is all covered by tiny and rigid scales with sophisticated morphology, which is one important factor to produce the high drag reducing efficiency. However, the drag reduction mechanism of sharkskin has not been understood thoroughly, which has developed into an urgent problem to be resolved. In this paper, the accurate 3D digital model of sharkskin surface is constructed based on the biological prototype and the micro flow field on the near wall is analyzed comprehensively and deeply. In addition, the drag reduction mechanism is explored from different aspects, especially which, the influences of the variation of attack angles of scales, the super-hydrophobic effect and nanochain of mucus on drag-reducing efficiency are taken into consideration, which has great significance on academic research and engineering application.
