Dual action bactericides: Quaternary ammonium/N-halamine-functionalized cellulose fiber

Fabrication of antimicrobial and high-toughness poly (lactic acid) composite films using tung oil derivatives

Tung oil derivatives are promising alternatives to traditional toxic plasticizers for improving the toughness of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) films. In this study, a tung oil-based quaternary ammonium salt (Q-ETO) was synthesized using a multi-step process involving epoxidation, ring opening, and substitution reactions. PLA based composite films with various amounts of Q-ETO were prepared by solvent casting. The impact of various amount of Q-ETO on PLA/Q-ETO composite films were evaluated with regard to their mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, water vapor permeability, optical properties, thermal stability, antibacterial properties, and leaching properties. The PLA/5%Q-ETO composite film yielded the highest elongation at break (82.52 ± 9.53 %), which was 153.67 % higher than that of pure PLA. All PLA composite films showed an antibacterial efficiency exceeding 90 % against both S. aureus and E. coli. Moreover, the PLA/Q-ETO composite film blocked the transmission of both ultraviolet and visible light while preventing the permeation of water vapor. The addition of Q-ETO only weakly affected the color and thermal stability of the PLA/Q-ETO composite film. Given the numerous advantages of the PLA composite film, it has significant potential for application as a food packaging material.

Recent Advances in Superhydrophobic and Antibacterial Cellulose-Based Fibers and Fabrics: Bio-inspiration, Strategies, and Applications

Cellulose-based fabrics are ubiquitous in our daily lives. They are the preferred choice for bedding materials, active sportswear, and next-to-skin apparels. However, the hydrophilic and polysaccharide characteristics of cellulose materials make them vulnerable to bacterial attack and pathogen infection. The design of antibacterial cellulose fabrics has been a long-term and on-going effort. Fabrication strategies based on the construction of surface micro-/nanostructure, chemical modification, and the application of antibacterial agents have been extensively investigated by many research groups worldwide. This review systematically discusses recent research on super-hydrophobic and antibacterial cellulose fabrics, focusing on morphology construction and surface modification. First, natural surfaces showing liquid-repellent and antibacterial properties are introduced and the mechanisms behind are explained. Then, the strategies for fabricating super-hydrophobic cellulose fabrics are summarized, and the contribution of the liquid-repellent function to reducing the adhesion of live bacteria and removing dead bacteria is elucidated. Representative studies on cellulose fabrics functionalized with super-hydrophobic and antibacterial properties are discussed in detail, and their potential applications are also introduced. Finally, the challenges in achieving super-hydrophobic antibacterial cellulose fabrics are discussed, and the future research direction in this area is proposed.

A Polysiloxane Delivery Vehicle of Cyclic N-Halamine for Biocidal Coating of Cellulose in Supercritical CO2

Cyclic N-halamines are highly antimicrobial, very stable, and not susceptible to bacterial resistance. A polysiloxane delivery vehicle was synthesized to deliver cyclic imide N-halamine onto cellulose via a benign and universal procedure that does not require a harmful solvent or chemical bonding. In brief, Knoevenagel condensation between barbituric acid and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde furnished 5-(4-hydroxybenzylidene)pyrimidine-2,4,6-trione, whose phenolic O-H was subsequently reacted with the Si-H of poly(methylhydrosiloxane) (PMHS) via silane alcoholysis. The product of silane alcoholysis was interpenetrated into cellulose in supercritical CO₂ (scCO₂) at 50 °C, to form a continuous modification layer. The thickness of the modification layer positively correlated with interpenetration pressure in the experimental range of 10 to 28 MPa and reached a maximum value of 76.5 nm, which demonstrates the ability for tunable delivery, to control the loading of the imide N-H bond originating from barbituric acid unit. The imide N-H bonds on cellulose with the thickest modifier were then chlorinated into N-Cl counterparts using tert-butyl hypochlorite, to exert a powerful biocidability, providing ~7 log reductions of both S. aureus and E. coli in 20 min. The stability and rechargeability of the biocidability were both very promising, suggesting that the polysiloxane modifier has a satisfactory chemical structure and interlocks firmly with cellulose via scCO₂ interpenetration.

Antibacterial N-halamine fibrous materials

Pathogenic microbial contamination poses serious threats to human healthcare and economies worldwide, which instigates the booming development of challenging antibacterial materials. N-halamine fibrous materials (NFMs), as an important part of antibacterial materials, featuring structural continuity, good pore connectivity, rapid sterilization, rechargeable bactericidal activity, and safety to humans and environment, have received significant research attention. This review aims to present a systematic discussion of the recent advances in N-halamine antibacterial fibrous materials. We firstly introduce the chemical structures and properties of N-halamine materials. Subsequently, the developed NFMs can be categorized based on their fabrication strategies, including surface modification and one-step spinning. Then some representative applications of these fibrous materials are highlighted. Finally, challenges and future research directions of the materials are discussed in the hope of giving suggestions for the following studies.

Combinations of Antimicrobial Polymers with Nanomaterials and Bioactives to Improve Biocidal Therapies

The rise of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms has become a critical issue in recent years and has promoted substantial research efforts directed to the development of more effective antimicrobial therapies utilizing different bactericidal mechanisms to neutralize infectious diseases. Modern approaches employ at least two mixed bioactive agents to enhance bactericidal effects. However, the combinations of drugs may not always show a synergistic effect, and further, could also produce adverse effects or stimulate negative outcomes. Therefore, investigations providing insights into the effective utilization of combinations of biocidal agents are of great interest. Sometimes, combination therapy is needed to avoid resistance development in difficult-to-treat infections or biofilm-associated infections treated with common biocides. Thus, this contribution reviews the literature reports discussing the usage of antimicrobial polymers along with nanomaterials or other inhibitors for the development of more potent biocidal therapies.
