Preparation and testing of Nafion/titanium dioxide nanocomposite membrane electrode assembly by ultrasonic coating technique

Titanium Dioxide/Phosphorous-Functionalized Cellulose Acetate Nanocomposite Membranes for DMFC Applications: Enhancing Properties and Performance

This study intends to provide new TiO₂/phosphorous-functionalized cellulose acetate (Ph-CA) nanocomposite membranes for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). A series of TiO₂/Ph-CA membranes were fabricated via solution casting technique using a systematic variation of TiO₂ nanoparticle content. Chemical structure, morphological changes, and thermal properties of the as-fabricated nanocomposite membranes were investigated by FTIR, TGA, SEM, and AFM analysis tools. Further, membranes' performance, mechanical properties, water uptake, thermal-oxidative stability, and methanol permeability were also evaluated. The results clarified that the ion-exchange capacity (IEC) of the developed nanocomposite membranes improved and reached a maximum value of 1.13 and 2.01 m_eq/g at 25 and 80 °C, respectively, using TiO₂ loading of 5 wt % compared to 0.6 and 0.81 m_eq/g for pristine Ph-CA membrane at the same temperature. Moreover, the TiO₂/Ph-CA nanocomposite exhibited excellent thermal stability with appreciable mechanical properties (49.9 MPa). The developed membranes displayed a lower methanol permeability of 0.98 × 10^-16 cm² s^-1 compared to 1.14 × 10^-9 cm² s^-1 for Nafion 117. The obtained results suggested that the developed nanocomposite membranes could be potentially applied as promising polyelectrolyte membranes for possible use in DMFCs.

Modulating Carrier Type for Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes/Polyethyleneimine Composites

Thermoelectric (TE) generators consisting of flexible and lightweight p- and n-type single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)-based composites have potential applications in powering wearable electronics using the temperature difference between the human body and the environment. Tuning the TE properties of SWCNTs, particularly p- versus n-type control, is currently of significant interest. Herein, the TE properties of SWCNT-based flexible films consisting of SWCNTs doped with polyethyleneimine (PEI) were evaluated. The carrier type of the SWCNT/PEI composites was modulated by regulating the proportion of SWCNTs and PEI using simple mixing techniques. The as-prepared SWCNT/PEI composite films were switched from p- to n-type by the addition of a high amount of PEI (>13.0 wt.%). Moreover, interconnected SWCNTs networks were formed due to the excellent SWNT dispersion and film formation. These parameters were improved by the addition of PEI and Nafion, which facilitated effective carrier transport. A TE generator with three thermocouples of p- and n-type SWCNT/PEI flexible composite films delivered an open circuit voltage of 17 mV and a maximum output power of 224 nW at the temperature gradient of 50 K. These promising results showed that the flexible SWCNT/PEI composites have potential applications in wearable and autonomous devices.

Applicability of a New Sulfonated Pentablock Copolymer Membrane and Modified Gas Diffusion Layers for Low-Cost Water Splitting Processes

The aim of this work is to evaluate the possible use of Nexar™ polymer, a sulfonated pentablock copolymer (s-PBC), whose structure is formed by tert-butyl styrene, hydrogenated isoprene, sulfonated styrene, hydrogenated isoprene, and tert-butyl styrene (tBS-HI-SS-HI-tBS), as a more economical and efficient alternative to Nafion® membrane for proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis cells. Furthermore, we have studied a new methodology for modification of gas diffusion layers (GDL) by depositing Pt and TiO2 nanoparticles at the cathode and anode side, respectively, and a protective polymeric layer on their surface, allowing the improvement of the contact with the membrane. Morphological, structural, and electrical characterization were performed on the Nexar™ membrane and on the modified GDLs. The use of modified GDLs positively affects the efficiency of the water electrolysis process. Furthermore, Nexar™ showed higher water uptake and conductivity with respect to Nafion®, resulting in an increased amount of current generated during water electrolysis. In conclusion, we show that Nexar™ is an efficient and cheaper alternative to Nafion® as the proton exchange membrane in water splitting applications and we suggest a possible methodology for improving GDLs’ properties. These results meet the urgent need for low-cost materials and processes for hydrogen production.
