Eucalyptol-loaded microcapsules combined with Cynanchum komarovii extracts provide long-term and low-risk management of Chinese wolfberry (Lycium barbarum L.)

Realizing eco-friendly, long-term, and low-risk aphid control on Lycium barbarum (medicinal cash crop) using a Cynanchum komarovii extracts and eucalyptus oil-loaded microcapsules (EOMCs) formulation compositions is viable. In this study, the aim is to optimize the composition of Cynanchum komarovii extracts and EOMCs formulation for effective control of aphids, the release of EOMCs was controlled by changing the cross-linking degree of the shell to match the aphid control characteristics of Cynanchum komarovii extracts. Four types of polyamines were used as cross-linking agents for the preparation of EOMCs by interfacial polymerization. The bioactivity, wettability, and field application efficacy of Cynanchum komarovii extracts and different EOMCs formulation compositions were evaluated. These EOMCs exhibited an encapsulation efficiency exceeding 85 %. The control efficiency of the formulation compositions of microcapsules with a moderate release rate and Cynanchum komarovii extracts on aphids remained at 62.86 %, while the control efficiency of the combination of microcapsules with the fastest and slowest rates with Cynanchum komarovii extracts was only 48.62 % and 57.11 %, respectively. The formulation compositions of Cynanchum komarovii extracts with all four types of EOMCs were found to be safe for Chinese wolfberry plants. Overall, by selecting appropriate polyamines during fabrication, the release rate can be effectively controlled to achieve sustainable and low-risk aphid control in Lycium barbarum through compounding with selected microcapsules.

Achieving Win-Win Ecotoxicological Safety and Fungicidal Activity of Pyraclostrobin-Loaded Polyurea Microcapsules by Selecting Proper Polyamines

The fungicide pyraclostrobin is highly toxic to aquatic organisms. Microencapsulation is an effective way to reduce the exposure of pyraclostrobin to aquatic organisms but it also reduces the contact probability between the fungicide and plant pathogens. Hence, winning a balance between the toxicity and bioactivity of pyraclostrobin is very necessary. In this study, triethylenetetramine (TETA), ethylenediamine (EDA), hexamethylenediamine (HAD), and isophoronediamine (IPDA) were selected as cross-linkers to prepare the pyraclostrobin-loaded polyurea microcapsules (PU-MCs) by interfacial polymerization. TETA formed the shells with the highest degree of cross-linking, the slowest release profile, and the best protection against ultraviolet (UV). In terms of MCs fabricated by diamines, higher leaking, weaker UV resistance of the shells was observed with increasing carbon skeleton. TETA-MCs showed the highest safety to zebrafish (LC₅₀ of 10.086 mg/L), whereas EDA-MCs, HAD-MCs, and IPDA-MCs were 5.342, 3.967, and 0.767 mg/L, respectively. TETA-MCs had the best long-term disease management, while the control efficacies of other MCs were higher at the early stage of disease development. Overall, a balance between the aquatic toxicities and fungicidal activities of pyraclostrobin-loaded PU-MCs could be reached through a simple selection of polyamines in the fabrication.

A Multi-Scale Approach to Microencapsulation by Interfacial Polymerization

This work applies a multi-scale approach to the microencapsulation by interfacial polymerization. Such microencapsulation is used to produce fertilizers, pesticides and drugs. In this study, variations at three different scales (molecular, microscopic and macroscopic) of product design (i.e., product variables, process variables and properties) are considered simultaneously. We quantify the effect of the formulation, composition and pH change on the microcapsules’ properties. Additionally, the method of measuring the strength of the microcapsules by crushing a sample of microcapsules’ suspension was tested. Results show that the xylene release rate in the microcapsules decreases when the amine functionality is greater due to a stronger crosslinking. Such degree of crosslinking increases the compression force over the microcapsules and improves their appearance. When high levels of amine concentration are used, the initial pH values in the reaction are also high which leads to agglomeration. This study provides a possible explanation to the aggregation based on the kinetic and thermodynamic controls in reactions and shows that the pH measurements account for the polyurea reaction and carbamate formation, which is a reason why this is not a suitable method to study kinetics of polymerization. Finally, the method used to measure the compressive strength of the microcapsules detected differences in formulations and composition with low sensibility.

Microfluidic-Assisted Fabrication of Monodisperse Core-Shell Microcapsules for Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive with Enhanced Performance

Microcapsule-based adhesives hold special properties offered by encapsulation via an interfacial shell. Microencapsulation provides the possibility of combining the materials with opposite properties for which co-existence is commonly difficult. In this work, we report on a high performance pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) based on monodisperse and size-controllable core–shell microcapsules, which are prepared from double-emulsion droplets constructed using microfluidic devices. Monodisperse microcapsules containing oxalic acid are prepared with a coefficient of variation (CV) size of <5% and the core-material encapsulation efficiency of >90%. The microcapsules and urea-formaldehyde resin are mixed to obtain capsules-based PSA. The overall size uniformity achieved from droplet microfluidics and the rigid interfacial shells from photopolymerized materials ensure high rupture efficiency and sufficient curing reaction during the process. The microcapsules with proper shell thickness can well encapsulate the core material with an even distribution in the center, separating the curing agent from the matrix resin to form a latent adhesive, which is released at the right place and the right time. The bonding strength of >0.7 MPa has been achieved for plywood boards bonding using the prepared PSAs. The capsule-based PSA could encapsulate active components to achieve an extended lifetime for storage, controlled release to achieve on-demand operation, and pressurized mechanical rupture for ease of use. These would be expected to promote the use of PSAs in modern industries such as micro- and nano-optoelectronic devices by further tuning the size and materials of the microcapsules.

The effect of initiator encapsulation on methyl methacrylate polymerization by isothermal differential scanning calorimetry

Microcapsules containing initiator of cumene hydroperoxide or tert-butyl peroxy-2-ethylhexanoate as core material and polyurea as shell material were prepared by condensation polymerisation in oil-in-water emulsion at different agitation speeds. And their effects on the polymerisation of methyl methacrylate were investigated by isothermal differential scanning calorimetry. In comparison to unencapsulated initiators, the use of encapsulated initiators significantly delayed the reaction, reduced the maximum heat flow, relatively reduced the maximum reaction rate, and made the conversion smaller. In addition, the encapsulated initiator shortened the time lag, increased the heat flow at the maximum point as the reaction temperature increased, and further delayed the appearance time of the maximum reaction point as the agitation speed decreased. The theoretical values calculated by the modified Kamal model, including the nth-order reaction formula and the autoacceleration reaction, were in good agreement with our experimental data. We observed the more prominent autoacceleration reaction at a higher conversion.

AuBr3 -Catalyzed Chemoselective Annulation of Isocyanates with 2H-Azirine

The chemoselective cyclization of isocyanates with 2H-azirine was achieved with AuBr₃ as catalyst. This transfer sets the stage for the synthesis of aromatic oxazole-ureas in a tandem process. The addition of a catalytic amount of phosphite enhances the process enormously. The reaction can also be performed in a one-pot process using benzoyl azide instead of isocyanate under the same conditions. A detailed study on the role of the phosphite that was applied as an additive revealed that only non-coordinated phosphite can reduce gold(III) and that gold(I) coordinated phosphite is not oxidized. Accompanied by the reduction of gold, HBr is generated in situ, which turned out to be the actual promotor in combination with the remaining AuBr₃ . The positive effect of acid can be explained by a strong N-Au coordination, which tends to break more easily in the presence of small amount of protic acid in the reaction solution.
