Controlled-release drug carriers based hierarchical silica microtubes templated from cellulose acetate nanofibers

Starch-Directed Synthesis of Worm-Shaped Silica Microtubes

Many strategies have been adopted to prepare silica materials with highly controlled structures, typically using sol-gel chemistry. Frequently, the alkoxysilanes used in sol-gel chemistry are based on monoalcohols, e.g., Si(OEt)₄. The structural control over silica synthesis achieved by these precursors is highly sensitive to pH and solvency. Alkoxysilanes derived from the sugar alcohol glycerol (diglycerylsilane) react more slowly and with much less sensitivity to pH. We report that, in the presence of cooled aqueous starch solutions, glyceroxysilanes undergo transesterification with the sugars on starch, leading to (hollow) microtubules resembling worms of about 400 nm in diameter. The tubes arise from the pre-assembly of starch bundles, which occurs only well below room temperature. It is straightforward to treat the first-formed starch/silica composite with the enzyme amylase to, in a programmed fashion, increasingly expose porosity, including the worm morphology, while washing away untethered silica and digested starch to leave an open, highly porous materials. Sintering at 600 °C completely removes the starch silane moieties.

A Facile Strategy for Fabrication Lysozyme-Loaded Mesoporous Silica Nanotubes from Electrospun Silk Fibroin Nanofiber Templates

This paper presents a facile and low-cost strategy for fabrication lysozyme-loaded mesoporous silica nanotubes (MSNTs) by using silk fibroin (SF) nanofiber templates. The “top-down method” was adopted to dissolve degummed silk in CaCl₂/ formic acid (FA) solvent, and the solution containing SF nanofibrils was used for electrospinning to prepare SF nanofiber templates. As SF contains a large number of -OH, -NH₂ and -COOH groups, the silica layer could be easily formed on its surface by the Söber sol-gel method without adding any surfactant or coupling agent. After calcination, the MSNTs were obtained with inner diameters about 200 nm, the wall thickness ranges from 37 ± 2 nm to 66 ± 3 nm and the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) specific surface area was up to 200.48 m²/g, the pore volume was 1.109 cm³/g. By loading lysozyme, the MSNTs exhibited relatively high drug encapsulation efficiency up to 31.82% and an excellent long-term sustained release in 360 h (15 days). These results suggest that the MSNTs with the hierarchical structure of mesoporous and macroporous will be a promising carrier for applications in biomacromolecular drug delivery systems.

Hierarchical silica monolithic tablets as novel carriers for drug delivery

This paper proposes the use of carriers with hierarchical porous structures as novel monolithic tablets for modified drug release. The influence of pore structure on the tamsulosin release profile is presented. The hierarchical arrangement of porous structure in monolithic tablets and the deposition of tamsulosin inside the silica carrier enable to control the kinetic of release and the amount of tamsulosin released. We developed a mathematical model of tamsulosin release from two carriers with different hierarchy of meso- and macropores. A model of this nature will allow to predict the release of tamsulosin from other carriers with a similar pore structure. We hope this research will improve the design process of novel carriers, and thus, will allow to tailor the porous structure of a carrier to achieve the desired release profile.

Controlled release for crop and wood protection: Recent progress toward sustainable and safe nanostructured biocidal systems

We review biocide delivery systems (BDS), which are designed to deter or control harmful organisms that damage agricultural crops, forests and forest products. This is a timely topic, given the growing socio-economical concerns that have motivated major developments in sustainable BDS. Associated designs aim at improving or replacing traditional systems, which often consist of biocides with extreme behavior as far as their solubility in water. This includes those that compromise or pollute soil and water (highly soluble or volatile biocides) or those that present low bioavailability (poorly soluble biocides). Major breakthroughs are sought to mitigate or eliminate consequential environmental and health impacts in agriculture and silviculture. Here, we consider the most important BDS vehicles or carriers, their synthesis, the environmental impact of their constituents and interactions with the active components together with the factors that affect their rates of release such as environmental factors and interaction of BDS with the crops or forest products. We put in perspective the state-of-the-art nanostructured carriers for controlled release, which need to address many of the challenges that exist in the application of BDS.
