Preparation and properties of epoxy-modified tung oil waterborne insulation varnish

Blending Modification of Alicyclic Resin and Bisphenol A Epoxy Resin to Enhance Salt Aging Resistance for Composite Core Rods

In order to promote the application of composite insulators in coastal areas with high temperature, high humidity and high salt, it is of great importance to develop matrix resin with salt corrosion resistance for composite core rods. In this study, bisphenol A epoxy resin was modified by blending with alicyclic epoxy resin (2021P). Three different proportions of 2021P/DGEBA blend resins (0% 2021P/DGEBA, 10% 2021P/DGEBA and 20% 2021P/DGEBA) were prepared, and the high salt medium corrosion test was carried out. The physicochemical (FTIR, DMA, TGA) and electrical properties (dielectric loss, leakage current and breakdown field strength) of the blend resin before and after aging were tested and analyzed, and the optimal blend proportion was determined. The results showed that after salt aging, the Tg of 0% 2021P/DGEBA decreased to 122.99 °C, while the Tg of 10% 2021P/DGEBA reached 134.89 °C; The leakage current of 0% 2021P/DGEBA increased to 48.994 μA, while that of 10% 2021P/DGEBA only increased to 44.549 μA; The breakdown field strength of 0% 2021P/DGEBA dropped to 40.36 kv/mm, while that of 10% 2021P/DGEBA only dropped to 43.63 kv/mm. The introduction of 2021P enhanced the salt corrosion resistance of the blend resin, which could hinder the penetration, diffusion and erosion of external media (such as Na⁺, Cl⁻, H₂O, etc.) to the matrix resin. The comprehensive properties of 10% 2021P/DGEBA blend system reached the best, which was better than other blending resins, showing great application potential.

Polar migration behavior of phosphonate groups in phosphonate esterified acrylic grafted epoxy ester composites and their role in substrate protection

Epoxy resin is widely used in metal surface protection, because of corrosion resistance and adhesion. However, it’s water solubility, oxygen, and water impermeability are not enough. In this paper, linoleic acid (LOFA) and epoxy resin (E20) were used to synthesize epoxy ester (EL) and grafted with phosphonate esterified acrylic resin (AR-P) to prepare acrylic grafted epoxy ester (EL@AR-P). After modification, water solubility and film-forming property were improved, and the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) decreased. At the addition of PM-2 at 2%, the OTR, WVTR, and water-uptake rate decreased by 12.9%, 25.0%, and 12.1%, respectively. Subsequently, the modified material was subjected to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The low-frequency impedance of EL@AR-P2 is three times higher than EL@AR-P0. After 16 days of immersion, the low-frequency impedance of EL@AR-P2 is 20 times higher than EL@AR-P. Energy dispersive spectrometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that the P elements were concentrated on the substrate surface and found the presence of P–O–Fe bonds, demonstrating that the phosphonate groups were migrated to the substrate surface to form a chelate layer with the substrate and enhancing the coating adhesion and corrosion resistance. This paper modifies the molecular structure of epoxy resin, which is expected to be an excellent material for anti-corrosion coatings.

Synthesis and Properties of Thermosets from Tung Oil and Furfuryl Methacrylate

This work focuses on the development of cross-linked polymer from a highly unsaturated vegetable oil, tung oil (TO) and a bio-based acrylate, furfuryl methacrylate (FMA). The presence of a high degree of unsaturated carbon-carbon bonding in TO makes it a suitable precursor for polymer synthesis. Using this advantage of TO, in this work, we have synthesised a cross-linked polymer from TO and FMA through free radical polymerisation followed by Diels–Alder (DA) reaction. Successful incorporation of both of the raw materials and the two chemical reactions was shown using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. The development of cross-linked structure was analysed through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA).
