One-pot synthesis, characterization, and field emission investigations of composites of polypyrrole with graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and graphene nanoribbons

Detection of protamine based on competitive adsorption onto the surface of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes

This study developed an adsorption-based determination system for protamine. A multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), which is a strong adsorbent, was used. The competitive adsorption process between dyes and protamine formed the basis of the sensor system. The adsorption process was followed over the dyes by UV-Vis. absorption spectroscopy. This sensor system was developed using the thermodynamic parameters. Transmission electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy techniques were used for the characterization of the sensor system. It was determined that the sensor system remained stable at physiological temperature and pH range. Limit of detection values of PyB-COO-MWCNT and PyY-COO-MWCNT systems were found to be 1.32 and 1.12 ng mL-1 , respectively. The applicability of the sensor systems was demonstrated using bovine serum solutions.

Functionalization of Graphene Derivatives with Conducting Polymers and Their Applications in Uric Acid Detection

In this article, we review recent progress concerning the development of sensorial platforms based on graphene derivatives and conducting polymers (CPs), alternatively deposited or co-deposited on the working electrode (usually a glassy carbon electrode; GCE) using a simple potentiostatic method (often cyclic voltammetry; CV), possibly followed by the deposition of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) on the electrode surface (ES). These materials have been successfully used to detect an extended range of biomolecules of clinical interest, such as uric acid (UA), dopamine (DA), ascorbic acid (AA), adenine, guanine, and others. The most common method is electrochemical synthesis. In the composites, which are often combined with metallic NPs, the interaction between the graphene derivatives-including graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (RGO), or graphene quantum dots (GQDs)-and the CPs is usually governed by non-covalent functionalization through π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds, and van der Waals (VW) forces. The functionalization of GO, RGO, or GQDs with CPs has been shown to speed up electron transfer during the oxidation process, thus improving the electrochemical response of the resulting sensor. The oxidation mechanism behind the electrochemical response of the sensor seems to involve a partial charge transfer (CT) from the analytes to graphene derivatives, due to the overlapping of π orbitals.

Structural and Dipole-Relaxation Processes in Epoxy-Multilayer Graphene Composites with Low Filler Content

Multilayered graphene nanoplatelets (MLGs) were prepared from thermally expanded graphite flakes using an electrochemical technique. Morphological characterization of MLGs was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (RS), and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. DGEBA-epoxy-based nanocomposites filled with synthesized MLGs were studied using Static Mechanical Loading (SML), Thermal Desorption Mass Spectroscopy (TDMS), Broad-Band Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS), and Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS). The mass loading of the MLGs in the nanocomposites was varied between 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, and 1% in the case of the SML study and 0.0, 1.0, 2, and 5% for the other measurements. Enhancements in the compression strength and the Young's modulus were obtained at extremely low loadings (C≤ 0.01%). An essential increase in thermal stability and a decrease in destruction activation energy were observed at C≤ 5%. Both the dielectric permittivity (ε1) and the dielectric loss factor (ε2) increased with increasing C over the entire frequency region tested (4 Hz-8 MHz). Increased ε2 is correlated with decreased free volume when increasing C. Physical mechanisms of MLG-epoxy interactions underlying the effects observed are discussed.
