Two-Dimensional Heterostructure of PPy/CNT-E. coli for High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes

The nano-biocomposite electrodes composed of carbon nanotube (CNT), polypyrrole (PPy), and E. coli-bacteria were investigated for electrochemical supercapacitors. For this purpose, PPy/CNT-E. coli was successfully synthesized through oxidative polymerization. The PPy/CNT-E. coli electrode exhibited a high specific capacitance of 173 F∙g^-1 at the current density of 0.2 A∙g^-1, which is much higher than that (37 F∙g^-1) of CNT. Furthermore, it displayed sufficient stability after 1000 charge/discharge cycles. The CNT, PPy/CNT, and PPy/CNT-E. coli composites were characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and surface analyzer (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, BET). In particular, the pyrrole monomers were easily adsorbed and polymerized on the surface of CNT materials, as well as E. coli bacteria enhanced the surface area and porous structure of the PPy/CNT-E. coli composite electrode resulting in high performance of devices.

Progress in polymers and polymer composites used as efficient materials for EMI shielding

The explosive progress of electronic devices and communication systems results in the production of undesirable electromagnetic pollution, known as electromagnetic interference. The accumulation of electromagnetic radiation in space results in the malfunction of commercial and military electronic appliances, and it may have a negative impact on human health. Thus, the shielding of undesirable electromagnetic interference has become a serious concern of the modern society, and has been a very perspective field of research and development. This paper provides detailed insight into current trends in the advancement of various polymer-based materials with the effects of electromagnetic interference shielding. First, the theoretical aspects of shielding are outlined. Then, the comprehensive description of the structure, morphology and functionalization of the intrinsic conductive polymers, polymers filled with the different types of inorganic and organic fillers, as well as multifunctional polymer architectures are provided with respect to their conductive, dielectric, magnetic and shielding characteristics.

Carbon Nanotubes Reinforced Maleic Anhydride-Modified Xylan-g-Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Hydrogel with Multifunctional Properties

Introducing multifunctional groups and inorganic material imparts xylan-based hydrogels with excellent properties, such as responsiveness to pH, temperature, light, and external magnetic field. In this work, a composite hydrogel was synthesized by introducing acid treated carbon nanotubes (AT-CNTs) into the maleic anhydride modified xylan grafted with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (MAX-g-PNIPAM) hydrogels network. It was found that the addition of AT-CNTs affected the MAX-g-PNIPAM hydrogel structure, the swelling ratio and mechanical properties, and imparted the hydrogel with new properties of electrical conductivity and near infrared region (NIR) photothermal conversion. AT-CNTs could reinforce the mechanical properties of MAX-g-PNIPAM hydrogels, being up to 83 kPa for the compressive strength when the amount was 11 wt %, which was eight times than that of PNIPAM hydrogel and four times than that of MAX-g-PNIPAM hydrogel. The electroconductibility was enhanced by the increase of AT-CNTs amounts. Meanwhile, the composite hydrogel also exhibited multiple shape memory and NIR photothermal conversion properties, and water temperature was increased from 26 °C to 56 °C within 8 min under the NIR irradiation. Thus, the AT-CNTs reinforced MAX-g-PNIPAM hydrogel possessed promising multifunctional properties, which offered many potential applications in the fields of biosensors, thermal-arrest technology, and drug-controlled release.
