Enhancement of Filtration Performance Characteristics of Glass Fiber-Based Filter Media, Part 1: Mechanical Modification with Electrospun Nanofibers

Various modifications of standard glass fiber filtration media using electrospun PA66 nanofibers are described. PA66 were selected because they were readily available from commercial sources. Other polymers, such as PP, PET and PBT, could also be used. The first set of samples was prepared by mixing the nanofibers at two, three and five weight percent with glass fibers, and the second by laying the same proportion of the nanofibers directly onto the downstream side of the substrate. The aim of these modifications was to improve the three most basic functionalities of filter media, the separation efficiency, the differential pressure (ΔP) and the dirt holding capacity (DHC). The modified media samples were evaluated with the standard textile characterization techniques and filtration performance evaluation procedures. The results showed differences in the several tens of percentage points achieved with the two modification methods. Moreover, additional differences in performance were observed depending on the percentage of nanofibers admixed to the substrate. These differences were most apparent in the filtration efficiency and the DHC, both by several percentage points, with no apparent effect on the ∆P. The results strongly suggest that the preparation of new filter media by incorporating nanofibers directly into the matrix can result in significant improvements in filtration performance characteristics.

Development of an asymmetric composite PPS-based bag-filter material through membrane laminating and superfine fiber blending: Lab test, field application and development of numerical models

Dedusting is crucial for air pollution control, and nonwoven needle felt (NWNF) bag-filters are widely applied for this purpose. Surface treatment of the filter materials can enhance NWNF's performance, but the large discrepancy in pore size between the surface and NWNF layers causes interface effects, impairing reverse cleaning and shortening service life. In this study, a novel PTFE membrane-laminated asymmetrical composite bag-filter was developed, by blending superfine polyphenylene sulfide fiber (PPS) in the original NWNF structure. Image analysis shows a gradual increase in pore size from the surface to the downstream layer. In standard lab-scale tests, the novel M-PPSF-S filter showed moderately higher resistance, significantly longer service life, higher dedusting efficiencies and better cleaning performance, compared to filters without surface laminating and/or superfine fiber blending. Numerical modelling was performed, and the flow fields and pressure distribution in these filter materials were visualized, confirming that M-PPSF-S' unique structure facilitated the alleviation of interface effect and non-steady flow. M-PPSF-S was further scaled up to treat real flue gas from a coal-fired power plant, where constant good performance was observed over 5 months. This study offers a novel and practical way to develop low-cost, high-performance filter materials for high temperature flue gas treatment.

Nanofibers in Respiratory Masks: An Alternative to Prevent Pathogen Transmission

Recent global outbreak of COVID-19 has raised serious awareness about our abilities to protect ourselves from hazardous pathogens and volatile organic compounds. Evidence suggests that personal protection equipment such as respiratory masks can radically decrease rates of transmission and infections due to contagious pathogens. To increase filtration efficiency without compromising breathability, application of nanofibers in production of respiratory masks have been proposed. The emergence of nanofibers in the industry has since introduced a next generation of respiratory masks that promises improved filtration efficiency and breathability via nanometric pores and thin fiber thickness. In addition, the surface of nanofibers can be functionalized and enhanced to capture specific particles. In addition to conventional techniques such as melt-blown, respiratory masks by nanofibers have provided an opportunity to prevent pathogen transmission. As the surge in global demand for respiratory masks increases, herein, we reviewed recent advancement of nanofibers as an alternative technique to be used in respiratory mask production.

Nude and Modified Electrospun Nanofibers, Application to Air Purification

Air transports several pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), which can produce cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Thus, it is a challenge to control pollutant emissions before releasing them to the environment. Until now, filtration has been the most efficient processes for removing PM. Therefore, the electrospinning procedure has been applied to obtain membranes with a high filtration efficiency and low pressure drop. This review addressed the synthesis of polymers that are used for fabricating high-performance membranes by electrospinning to remove air pollutants. Then, the most influential parameters to produce electrospun membranes are indicated. The main results show that electrospun membranes are an excellent alternative to having air filters due to the versatility of the process, the capacity for controlling the fiber diameter, porosity, high filtration efficiency and low-pressure drop.

Advances in air pollution control for key industries in China during the 13th five-year plan

Industrial development is an essential foundation of the national economy, but the industry is also the largest source of air pollution, of which power plants, iron and steel, building materials, and other industries emit large amounts of pollutants. Therefore, the Chinese government has promulgated a series of stringent emission regulations, and it is against this backdrop that research into air pollution control technologies for key industrial sectors is in full swing. In particular, during the 13th Five-Year Plan, breakthroughs have been made in pollution control technology for key industrial sectors. A multi-pollutant treatment technology system of desulfurization, denitrification, and dust collection, which applies to key industries such as power plants, steel, and building materials, has been developed. High-performance materials for the treatment of different pollutants, such as denitrification catalysts and desulfurization absorbers, were developed. At the same time, multi-pollutant synergistic removal technologies for flue gas in various industries have also become a hot research topic, with important breakthroughs in the synergistic removal of NO_x, SO_x, and Hg. Due to the increasingly stringent emission standards and regulations in China, there is still a need to work on the development of multi-pollutant synergistic technologies and further research and development of synergistic abatement technologies for CO₂ to meet the requirements of ultra-low emissions in industrial sectors.

Inorganic-organic nanofiber networks with antibacteria properties for enhanced particulate filtration: The critical role of amorphous titania

The demand for air filter media at indoor and outdoor is increasing tremendously due to air pollution and especially for problems related to airborne particulate matter (PM). To realize that, here a class nanofiber air filter media with strong antibacterial activity, hydrophobic nature, high filtration efficiency with low pressure drop is prepared. Novel organic-inorganic nanocomposite nanofibers used in this work benefited for the multifunctional performance. Amorphous titanium dioxide (mTiO₂) is utilized for air filtration application which exhibits excellent enhancement of PM_2.5 filtration properties and antibacterial activity. The unique Poly (vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP)-mTiO₂ nanofiber air filter media acquired hydrophobic nature with a large increase in water contact angle of 127° from 36°. The resulting free-standing nanofiber filters exhibit high PM_2.5 filtration efficiency of >99.9% and low pressure drop of 39 Pa. Antibacterial activity of nanofibrous membrane has been rationally engineered by titanium oxide as the barrier to bacterial ingression. A long term of 160 h filtration test has proved PVP-mTiO₂ nanofibers air filter media holds outstanding 99% filtration efficiency for PM_2.5. This work takes forward a significant lead in design and production of high performance and very low pressure drop air filter media with a wide range of functional properties.

Electrospun Poly(ethylene Terephthalate)/Silk Fibroin Composite for Filtration Application

In this study, fibrous membranes from recycled-poly(ethylene terephthalate)/silk fibroin (r-PSF) were prepared by electrospinning for filtration applications. The effect of silk fibroin on morphology, fibers diameters, pores size, wettability, chemical structure, thermo-mechanical properties, filtration efficiency, filtration performance, and comfort properties such as air and water vapor permeability was investigated. The filtration efficiency (FE) and quality factor (Qf), which represents filtration performance, were calculated from penetration through the membranes using aerosol particles ranging from 120 nm to 2.46 μm. The fiber diameter influenced both FE and Qf. However, the basis weight of the membranes has an effect, especially on the FE. The prepared membranes were classified according to EN149, and the most effective was assigned to the class FFP1 and according to EN1822 to the class H13. The impact of silk fibroin on the air permeability was assessed. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity against bacteria S. aureus and E. coli and biocompatibility were evaluated. It is discussed that antibacterial activity depends not only on the type of used materials but also on fibrous membranes' surface wettability. In vitro biocompatibility of the selected samples was studied, and it was proven to be of the non-cytotoxic effect of the keratinocytes (HaCaT) after 48 h of incubation.

Electrospinning of Nanofibrous Membrane and Its Applications in Air Filtration: A Review

Air pollution caused by particulate matter and toxic gases is violating individual’s health and safety. Nanofibrous membrane, being a reliable filter medium for particulate matter, has been extensively studied and applied in the field of air purification. Among the different fabrication approaches of nanofibrous membrane, electrospinning is considered as the most favorable and effective due to its advantages of controllable process, high production efficiency, and low cost. The electrospun membranes, made of different materials and unique structures, exhibit good PM2.5 filtration performance and multi-functions, and are used as masks and filters against PM2.5. This review presents a brief overview of electrospinning techniques, different structures of electrospun nanofibrous membranes, unique characteristics and functions of the fabricated membranes, and summarization of the outdoor and indoor applications in PM filtration.

Electrospinning fabrication of polystyrene-silica hybrid fibrous membrane for high-efficiency air filtration

The development of new materials for air filtration and particulate matter (PM) pollution is critical to solving global environmental issues that threaten human health and accelerate the greenhouse effect. In this study, a novel electrospun polystyrene-SiO2 nanoparticle (PS-SNP) fibrous membrane was explored by a single-step strategy to obtain the composite multi-layered filter masks. In addition, the air filtration performance of this fibrous membrane for PM was evaluated. The effects of SiO2 on the composition, morphology, mechanical property, and surface wetting of PS-SNP membranes were studied. Allowing SiO2 to be incorporated into the PS polymer was endowed with promising superhydrophobicity and demonstrated excellent mechanical properties. As-prepared PS-SNP membranes possess significantly better filtration efficiency than pure PS membrane. Furthermore, a three-layered air filter media (viscose/PS-SNP/polyethylene terephthalate) used in this study has considerable performances compared to the commercial masks. Since this air filtration membrane has excellent features such as high air filtration and permeability, we anticipate it to have huge potential application in air filtration systems, including cleanroom, respirator, and protective clothing.

Self-Adhesion Conductive Sub-micron Fiber Cardiac Patch from Shape Memory Polymers to Promote Electrical Signal Transduction Function

Myocardial infarction (MI) constitutes the first cause of morbidity and mortality in our life, so using highly conductive and elastic materials to produce an engineered cardiac patch is an effective way to improve the myocardium infarction area function. Here, shape memory polymers of the polyurethane/polyaniline/silicon oxide (PU/PANI/SiO₂) electrospinning sub-micron fiber patch were precisely produced in the case of the hydrogen bonding effect and interaction between the carboxyl groups to provide compatibility, phase mixing/miscibility, and stability. The sub-micron fiber patch prepared by our group has some remarkable characteristics, such as sub-micron fibers, 3D porous structure, special thickness to simulate the extracellular matrix (ECM), elastic deformation, good properties in conducting weak electrical signals, stability to maintain the whole structure, and self-adhesion. This sub-micron fiber material has been proven to be effective, easy, and reliable. Through precise design of the material system, structure regulation, and performance optimization, the aim is to produce a sub-micron fiber cardiac patch to simulate the myocardium ECM and improve conductive signal transduction for potential MI therapy.

Recent Advances in Electrospun Sustainable Composites for Biomedical, Environmental, Energy, and Packaging Applications

Electrospinning has gained constant enthusiasm and wide interest as a novel sustainable material processing technique due to its ease of operation and wide adaptability for fabricating eco-friendly fibers on a nanoscale. In addition, the device working parameters, spinning solution properties, and the environmental factors can have a significant effect on the fibers' morphology during electrospinning. This review summarizes the newly developed principles and influence factors for electrospinning technology in the past five years, including these factors' interactions with the electrospinning mechanism as well as its most recent applications of electrospun natural or sustainable composite materials in biology, environmental protection, energy, and food packaging materials.
