The Electrical and Mechanical Characteristics of Conductive PVA/PEDOT:PSS Hydrogel Foams for Soft Strain Sensors

Conductive hydrogels are of interest for highly flexible sensor elements. We compare conductive hydrogels and hydrogel foams in view of strain-sensing applications. Polyvinyl alcool (PVA) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT:PSS) are used for the formulation of conductive hydrogels. For hydrogel foaming, we have investigated the influence of dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBSA) as foaming agent, as well as the influence of air incorporation at various mixing speeds. We showed that DBSA acting as a surfactant, already at a concentration of 1.12wt%, efficiently stabilizes air bubbles, allowing for the formulation of conductive PVA and PVA/PEDOT:PSS hydrogel foams with low density (<400 kg/m3) and high water uptake capacity (swelling ratio > 1500%). The resulting Young moduli depend on the air-bubble incorporation from mixing, and are affected by freeze-drying/rehydration. Using dielectric broadband spectroscopy under mechanical load, we demonstrate that PVA/PEDOT:PSS hydrogel foams exhibit a significant decrease in conductivity under mechanical compression, compared to dense hydrogels. The frequency-dependent conductivity of the hydrogels exhibits two plateaus, one in the low frequency range, and one in the high frequency range. We find that the conductivity of the PVA/PEDOT:PSS hydrogels decreases linearly as a function of pressure in each of the frequency regions, which makes the hydrogel foams highly interesting in view of compressive strain-sensing applications.

Functional impacts of polyaniline in composite matrix of photocatalysts: an instrumental overview

The challenges associated with photocatalysts including their agglomeration, electron-hole recombination and limited optoelectronic reactivity to visible light during the photocatalysis of dye-laden effluent make it necessary to fabricate versatile polymeric composite photocatalysts, and in this case the incredibly reactive conducting polyaniline can be employed. The selection of polyaniline among the conducting polymers is based on its proficient functional impacts in composite blends and proficient synergism with other nanomaterials, especially semiconductor catalysts, resulting in a high photocatalytic performance for the degradation of dyes. However, the impacts of PANI in the composite matrix, which result in the desired photocatalytic activities, can only be assessed using multiple characterization techniques, involving both microscopic and spectroscopic assessment. The characterization results play a significant role in the detection of possible points of agglomeration, surface tunability and improved reactivity during the fabrication of composites, which are necessary to improve their performance in the photocatalysis of dyes. Accordingly, studies revealed the functional impacts of polyaniline in composites including morphological transformation, improved surface functionality, reduction in agglomeration and lowered bandgap potential employing different characterization techniques. In this review, we present the most proficient fabrication techniques based on the in situ approach to achieve improved functional and reactive features and efficiencies of 93, 95, 96, 98.6 and 99% for composites in dye photocatalysis.

Electro-stimulated drug release by methacrylated hyaluronic acid-based conductive hydrogel with enhanced mechanical properties

Recently, the design of stimuli-responsive hydrogels for controlled drug delivery systems has been extensively investigated to meet therapeutic needs and optimize the release pattern of the drug. Being a natural polyelectrolyte, hyaluronic acid (HA) is excellent potential to generate new opportunities for electro-responsive drug carrier applications. In the current study, HA-based electroconductive hydrogel was developed as a novel smart drug carrier for anti-inflammatory drug release by the combination of in-situ and post polymerization mechanisms. HA was modified through methacrylation reaction to introduce photocrosslinkable groups into its structure and then reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was encapsulated into methacrylated HA (HA/MA) hydrogel by using the photopolymerization technique. In the post polymerization process, polyaniline (PANI) was incorporated/loaded into HA/MA-rGO polymeric network produced in previous step. The produced HA/MA-rGO-PANI hydrogel exhibited sufficient electrical conductivity providing the desirable electro-responsive ability for Ibuprofen (IBU) release. Furthermore, it has superior mechanical performance compared to pure (HA/MA) and rGO containing (HA/MA-rGO) hydrogels. IBU release from the hydrogel was successfully triggered by electrical stimulation and the cumulative drug release also enhanced by increasing of the applied voltage. These results highlighted that the novel HA/MA-rGO-PANI hydrogel could be a promising candidate for electrical-stimulated anti-inflammatory release systems in neural implant applications.

Conducting polymer hydrogels as a sustainable platform for advanced energy, biomedical and environmental applications

Environmentally friendly polymeric materials and derivative technologies play increasingly important roles in the sustainable development of our modern society. Conducting polymer hydrogels (CPHs) synergizing the advantageous characteristics of conventional hydrogels and conducting polymers are promising to satisfy the requirements of environmental sustainability. Beyond their use in energy and biomedical applications that require exceptional mechanical and electrical properties, CPHs are emerging as promising contaminant adsorbents owing to their porous network structure and regulable functional groups. Here, we review the currently available strategies for synthesizing CPHs, focusing primarily on multifunctional applications in energy storage/conversion, biomedical engineering and environmental remediation, and discuss future perspectives and challenges for CPHs in terms of their synthesis and applications. It is envisioned to stimulate new thinking and innovation in the development of next-generation sustainable materials.
