Abstract
CONTEXT Phosphite esters, a class of organo-phosphorus compounds, are widely used as non-discolouring antioxidants in many polymeric products. Apart from normal radical scavenging, they prevent the splitting of hydroperoxides (ROOH), one of the initial products of autoxidation, from forming extremely reactive free radicals such as alkoxy (RO.) and hydroxy (.OH) radicals. The inherent molecular properties of antioxidants and the chemistry of their action are essential for researchers working in this field of science. Four organo-phosphorous compounds well-known for their antioxidant activity are selected here for theoretical analysis: Tri(m-methylphenyl) phosphite (m-TMPP), Tri(4-methyl-2,6-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite (TMdtBPP), Tri(allylphenyl) phosphite (TAPP) and Tri(mercaptobenzothiazoyl) thiophosphate (TMBTTP). The antioxidant activity exhibited by these compounds is theoretically verified, and the results are consistent with the available experimental data. Such theoretical predictions offer advantages in scientific research, particularly when researchers need to select certain molecules as antioxidants for experiments from a pool of molecular systems. METHODS The chemical computations presented in this report are done in Gaussian 16 program package. The procedure of density functional theory (DFT) with the model chemistry B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) is used to generate computational data. Global reactivity indices, thermochemical data, Fukui functions, molecular electrostatic potential and NMR spectra are computed for the chosen molecular systems from their optimized geometries.

Abstract
Ordering takeout is a growing social phenomenon and may raise public health concerns. However, the associated health risk of compounds leaching from plastic packaging is unknown due to the lack of chemical and toxicity data. In this study, 20 chemical candidates were tentatively identified in the environmentally relevant leachate from plastic containers through the nontargeted chemical analysis. Three main components with high responses and/or predicted toxicity were further verified and quantified, namely, 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (BHC), 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (2,4-DTBP), and 9-octadecenamide (oleamide). The toxicity to zebrafish larvae of BHC, a degradation product of a widely used antioxidant Irganox 1010, was quite similar to that of the whole plastic leachate. In the same manner, RNA-seq-based ingenuity analysis showed that the affected canonical pathways of zebrafish larvae were quite comparable between BHC and the whole plastic leachate, i.e., highly relevant to neurological disease, metabolic disease, and even behavioral disorder. Longer-term exposure (35 days) did not cause any effect on adult zebrafish but led to decreased hatching rate and obvious neurotoxicity in zebrafish offspring. Collectively, this study strongly suggests that plastic containers can leach out a suite of compounds causing non-negligible impacts on the early stages of fish via direct or parental exposure.

Abstract
Chemically and biologically safe storage of solutions for medical uses is a daily concern for industry since decades and it appeared even more dramatic during the last two years of pandemia. Biological safety is readily reached by sterilization using γ-irradiation process. However, such a type of irradiation induces the degradation and the release of chemicals able to spoil the biological solutions. Surprisingly, there are no investigations on multi-layer films combining multi-technique and multi-method approaches to unveil the events occurring during γ-irradiation. Furthermore, our investigations are focuses on properties/events occurring at product, macromolecular, and molecular levels.

Abstract
Cables, especially their insulation and jacket materials made of polymers, are vulnerable to ageing degradation during normal operation. However, they must remain functional for the entire life of a nuclear power plant, or even in the event of an accident for cables with a safety requirement. This study focuses on models of crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE)-based insulation of cables and deals with the structure modification and the behavior of XLPE for nuclear applications due to the effect of additives. Various additives are added to the polymer formulation to evaluate their impact on ageing. The samples are irradiated at room temperature by several gamma doses, up to 374 kGy, with two dose rates (40 Gy/h and 300 Gy/h) and compared with a non-irradiated sample used as reference. To understand the impact of gamma irradiation on the materials, the principal component analysis (PCA) method is applied on spectra recorded through attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. The results highlight the effects of ageing depending on the dose rate and on the formulation of the materials, with the identification of different degradation products. A curve resolution study compares the effects of different additives on polymer oxidation and shows that the low dose rate leads to a higher degradation than the high dose rate.

Abstract
Two types of nanocomposite films, polyethylene/silver (PE/Ag) and polypropylene/silver (PP/Ag), were prepared and characterised. Assessment of silver released under the effect of ionising irradiation was performed on the nanocomposite films. The release experiment was carried out by immersing the nanocomposite films in water, 3% acetic acid or 95% ethanol as food simulants and measuring the Ag release from nanocomposite films treated with and without gamma or electron beam irradiation at a dose of 10 kGy. In general, irradiation treatment increased the Ag release regardless of the type of polymer and food simulant. One reason could be radiation-induced metal oxidation at the surface which in turn promoted ion release into food simulants. The oxidising radicals produced by radiation in solution could be another factor speeding up metal oxidation and subsequent ion release. When comparisons were made between the two types of irradiation, greater Ag release into water and 3% acetic acid was observed after electron beam irradiation, while gamma irradiation was likely to induce greater Ag release into 95% ethanol. Such phenomena reveal the influence of different types of radiation on the solutions which in turn affect the Ag release.
