Synthesis of clay‐armored coatable sulfonated polyimide nanocomposites as robust polyelectrolyte membranes

Cellulose/inorganic nanoparticles-based nano-biocomposite for abatement of water and wastewater pollutants

Nanostructured materials offer a significant role in wastewater treatment with diminished capital and operational expense, low dose, and pollutant selectivity. Specifically, the nanocomposites of cellulose with inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) have drawn a prodigious interest because of the extraordinary cellulose properties, high specific surface area, and pollutant selectivity of NPs. Integrating inorganic NPs with cellulose biopolymers for wastewater treatment is a promising advantage for inorganic NPs, such as colloidal stability, agglomeration prevention, and easy isolation of magnetic material after use. This article presents a comprehensive overview of water treatment approaches following wastewater remediation by green and environmentally friendly cellulose/inorganic nanoparticles-based bio-nanocomposites. The functionalization of cellulose, functionalization mechanism, and engineered hybrid materials were thoroughly discussed. Moreover, we also highlighted the purification of wastewater through the composites of cellulose/inorganic nanoparticles via adsorption, photocatalytic and antibacterial approach.

Negatively Charged Laponite Sheets Enhanced Solid Polymer Electrolytes for Long-Cycling Lithium-Metal Batteries

Solid polymer electrolytes suffer from the low ionic conductivity and poor capability of suppressing lithium dendrites, which have greatly hindered the practical application of solid-state lithium-metal batteries. Here, we report a novel laponite sheet (LS) with a large negatively charged surface as an additive in a solid composite electrolyte (poly(ethylene oxide)-LS) to rearrange the lithium-ion environment and enhance the mechanical strength of the electrolytes (PEO-LS). The strong electrostatic regulation of laponite sheets assists the dissociation of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) and constructs multiple transport channels for free lithium ions, achieving a high ionic conductivity of 1.1 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 at 60 °C. Furthermore, LS facilitates the in situ formation of a LiF-rich interface because of the boosting TFSI^- anion concentration, which significantly suppresses lithium dendrites and prevents short circuit. As a result, the assembled LiFePO₄|PEO-LS|Li battery demonstrates a long cycle life of over 800 cycles and a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.9% at 1C and 60 °C. When paired with a high-voltage NCM811 cathode, the battery also demonstrates excellent cycling stability and rate capability.

Clay-polymer nanocomposites for water and wastewater treatment: A comprehensive review

A majority of water pollution or contamination occurs through the discharge of effluents from industries. Wastewater treatment is crucial to protect our water sources from harmful pollutants. Therefore, a number of efforts have been made to tackle this issue by employing different techniques. Clay minerals and polymers are among these materials used extensively in wastewater treatment. While both have their own drawbacks, it is fascinating to discover that they complement each other to overcome most of their limitations. As a result, clay-polymer nanocomposites (CPNs) have been found to be highly efficient in the adsorption of pollutants from water and show promising results to be a long-term candidate for this purpose. In this paper, we discuss about different types of clay and polymers used in the preparation of CPNs. The work also focuses on the different types of clay-polymer nanocomposites, their synthesis and factors affecting their performance such as pH, temperature, contact time, pollutant concentration and adsorbent dose. In addition, the maximum adsorption capacity, mechanism and kinetics of adsorption are highlighted to assess the performance of CPNs. Various studies indicate that CPNs are only a few steps away from becoming one of the best options for wastewater treatment due to their multiple desirable properties.
