Fostering Students' Collaborative Learning Competencies and Professional Conduct in the Context of Two Gross Anatomy Courses in Veterinary Medicine

The influence of collaborative learning and self-organisation on medical students' academic performance in anatomy

BACKGROUND

In 2021, university teaching at the Faculty of Medicine Tuebingen was transferred to a digital setting. Due to the discontinuation of face-to-face teaching, students lacked the temporal and spatial framework of the curriculum and the possibility to socialise with fellow students was extremely limited. Increased demands were placed on the students' self-organisation, and the possibility of collaborative learning was drastically limited. The present study investigated the extent to which these study conditions affected the academic performance of medical students in the oral exam after the 60-hour introductory anatomy lecture. Specifically, collaborative, and organisational learning strategies were considered.

METHODS

Learning strategies of 146 students were assessed by means of a questionnaire. The anatomy exam was used to assess the academic performance. In addition, students were asked to rate their own oral exam performance.

RESULTS

Students used strategies of collaborative learning (M = 3.30, SD = 0.88) and self-organisation (M = 3.28, SD = 0.72) about equally as often. A significant correlation was found between the use of collaborative learning strategies and the ability for realistic self-assessment (ρ = -0.22, P =.02). Collaborative behaviour could be divided into Initiative Collaborative Learning and Subordinate Collaborative Learning. Only the former had an influence on the ability for realistic self-assessment. Neither organisational learning strategies nor collaborative learning strategies had an influence on academic performance.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

Initiative collaborative learners showed a higher degree of realistic self-assessment. This could be explained through a more distinct social referencing, as fellow students' knowledge levels can be related early on to their own academic performance. There was no correlation between the learning strategies used and the exam result.

Application of Blended Learning to Veterinary Gross Anatomy Practical Sessions: Students' Perceptions of Their Learning Experience and Academic Outcomes

The use of blended learning strategies is increasingly common in health sciences, including veterinary medicine; however, there are very few descriptions of these methods being applied to practicals. We describe here the application of blended learning based on the implementation of flipped classrooms with collaborative learning and gamification to the 2020-2021 veterinary medicine gross anatomy practicals at CEU Cardenal Herrera University (Spain). Students prepared for the sessions by pre-viewing videos and taking a quiz before the start. The sessions were conducted in small groups where students learned through collaborative work and reviewed their learning with a card game. A small but significant increase was observed when comparing the scores of practical exams of the locomotor apparatus with those of 2018-2019 (6.79 ± 2.22 vs. 6.38 ± 2.24, p < 0.05), while the scores were similar (7.76 ± 1.99 vs. 7.64 ± 1.92) for the organ system exams. Students' responses in a satisfaction survey were mostly positive (>80%) regarding the motivating and learning-facilitating effect of this educational method. Our work shows that the application of blended learning in anatomy practicals based on a flipped classroom and with elements of gamification and collaborative work can be an effective way to improve the learning experience of students.

A multi-year evaluation of medical student performance on and perceptions of collaborative gross anatomy laboratory examinations

Collaborative testing and its benefits have been reported in diverse disciplines across different types of academic institutions. However, there has been minimal research conducted on collaborative assessments in medical schools, particularly in the gross anatomy laboratory. The objectives of this study were to explore the effect of collaborative anatomy laboratory examinations on student performance and to gauge student perceptions of this assessment format. This study examined five academic years of medical students' performance on a two-stage, collaborative anatomy laboratory examination wherein each student's overall score was a weighted combination of scores from the individual and team examination. Analyses of a descriptive survey capturing students' perceptions of the assessment method were also performed. Individual examination averages increased since implementing the collaborative assessment (p < 0.001), and team examination averages were higher than individual examination averages (p < 0.001). Teams outperformed each of their team members 98% of the time. Teams had a greater than 0.90 incidence of answering a question correctly if more than one person in the group got the answer correct on the individual portion, and a 0.66 incidence of answering correctly if only one person in their group answered correctly on the individual portion. Student feedback identified the discussions and learning that took place during the team portion to be a beneficial feature of this assessment format. Students also reported that this collaborative assessment made them feel a higher level of responsibility to perform well, and that it improved their understanding of gross anatomy.

Impact of combination of short lecture and group discussion on the learning of physiology by nonmajor undergraduates

This study assessed the impact of an "active learning" strategy employed alone or in combination with traditional lectures on the learning of mammalian physiology by undergraduate students. The study investigated the impact of three teaching strategies, namely 1) traditional lecture, 2) group discussion alone, and 3) combination of lecture and group discussion. For all strategies, students were given homework in a textbook and they completed written assignments before each session. Every student led the discussion of at least one assigned theme during each group session. The students had no access to the textbook or notes during group discussions. Four examinations (3 in-semester and a final) assessed the students' knowledge of fundamental concepts of physiology of specific organ systems. Part of the final examination reassessed knowledge of previously tested topics. The results show that the teaching modality employed to introduce physiology topics influenced students' learning. The average marginal effect of the lecture + discussion modality (average improvement linked to lecture + discussion strategy) on students' performance was 6.45% [95% confidence interval (CI₉₅) (4.73, 8.16), P = 1.74 × 10^-13], and the average improvement associated with the discussion-only modality was 5.5% [CI₉₅ (3.84, 7.16), P = 7.84 × 10^-11]. On average, all class ranks performed better on materials covered under active learning settings than under lecture-only conditions. Moreover, students' performance under combined lecture and discussion conditions is predictive of their overall performance in the course. The results support the positive effect of student-centered learning and demonstrate the efficacy of a combination of lectures and group discussions on learning of physiology by nonmajor students.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of group discussion on the learning of mammalian physiology by nonmajor undergraduate students. Combining traditional lectures with group discussions increased the active participation of students in class and improved their learning of physiology, as measured by the results of in-semester and final examinations. The active learning technique benefited all class ranks on average.

A randomized trial comparing cadaveric dissection and examination of prosections as applied surgical anatomy teaching pedagogies

Anatomy is an important component in the vertical integration of basic science and clinical practice. Two common pedagogies are cadaveric dissection and examination of prosected specimens. Comparative studies mostly evaluate their immediate effectiveness. A randomized controlled trial design was employed to compare both the immediate and long-term effectiveness of dissection and prosection. Eighty third-year medical students undergoing their surgical rotation from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine were randomized into two groups: dissection and prosection. Each participated in a one-day hands-on course following a similar outline that demonstrated surgical anatomy in the context of its clinical relevance. A pre-course test was conducted to establish baseline knowledge. A post-course test was conducted immediately after and at a one-year interval to evaluate learner outcome and knowledge retention. A post-course survey was conducted to assess participant perception. Thirty-nine and thirty-eight participants for the dissection and prosection groups, respectively, were included for analysis. There was no significant difference between mean pre-course test scores between the dissection and prosection groups [12.6 (3.47) vs. 12.7 (3.16), P > 0.05]. Both the mean immediate [27.9 (4.30) vs. 24.9 (4.25), P < 0.05] and 1 year [23.9 (4.15) vs. 19.9 (4.05), P < 0.05] post-course test scores were significantly higher in the dissection group. However, when adjusted for course duration [dissection group took longer than prosection group (mean 411 vs. 265 min)], these findings were negated. There is no conclusive evidence of either pedagogy being superior in teaching surgical anatomy. Based on learner surveys, dissection provides a greater learner experience.

The Integration of Prelaboratory Assignments within Neuroanatomy Augment Academic Performance, Increase Engagement, and Enhance Intrinsic Motivation in Students

The study of neuroanatomy imposes a significant cognitive load on students since it includes huge factual information and therefore demands diverse learning strategies. In addition, a significant amount of teaching is carried out through human brain demonstrations, due to limited opportunities for cadaveric dissection. However, reports suggest that students often attend these demonstrations with limited preparation, which detrimentally impacts their learning. In the context of student learning, greater levels of engagement and intrinsic motivation (IM) are associated with better academic performance. However, the maintenance of engagement and the IM of students in neuroanatomy is often challenging for educators. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the role of prelaboratory assignments (PLAs) in the improvement of academic performance, augmentation of engagement, and enhancement of IM in occupational therapy students enrolled in a human neuroanatomy course. One cohort of students in the course was expected to complete PLAs prior to each brain demonstration session. The PLAs contained a list of structures, and students were expected to write a brief anatomical description of each structure. Another cohort of students who were not provided with similar PLAs constituted the control group. Students who completed PLAs had a higher score on the final examinations as compared to students who were not required to complete PLAs. These students also demonstrated greater engagement and IM, and indicated that they perceived PLAs to be valuable in the learning of neuroanatomy. Therefore, PLAs represent a useful teaching tool in the neuroanatomy curriculum.

Spending Wisely: The Role of Cost and Value Research in the Pursuit of Advancing Anatomical Sciences Education

Studies of "cost and value" in anatomical sciences education examine not only what works, but at what cost, thus evaluating the inputs and outputs of education. This research provides insights into how to use available resources (e.g., academic time, budgets, infrastructure) as a mechanism to obtaining the maximum outcomes available. The purpose of this viewpoint article is to expand on the application of cost and value concepts to anatomical sciences education, contextualizing these concepts through a deeper dive into the more costly educational approaches of human donor dissection. In doing so, both questions and opportunities are raised for the discipline of anatomical sciences going forward. Educational decisions, inclusive of cost and value appraisals, consider the range of outcomes for which the activity is designed to achieve, and the activity's integration with the philosophy of the educational program it is contributing to; these decisions, thus, evaluate more than just cost alone. Healthcare students' engagement with human donor dissection pedagogy offers an array of reported non-economic benefits, including non-traditional discipline-independent skill (NDIS) development (e.g., professionalism, teamwork skills). These skills are often harder to measure, but are no less important to the final pedagogical decision-making process. The goal of cost and value research is to create an evidence-base toward education that delivers maximum value for a given spend. Anatomy educators, researchers, and decision makers who embrace cost and value dialogue, and interpret and apply findings from studies of educational costs, are best positioned to improve the educational value for their learners and provide effective outputs for all stakeholders.

Anatomy as a Model Environment for Acquiring Professional Competencies in Medicine: Experiences at Harvard Medical School

Anatomy education provides students with opportunities to learn structure and function of the human body, to acquire professional competencies such as teamwork, interpersonal skills, self-awareness, and to reflect on and practice medical ethics. The fulfillment of this wide potential can present challenges in courses that are part of an integrated curriculum and shorter than traditional courses. This new reality, together with students' increasing concern about the stresses within medical education, led to efforts at Harvard Medical School to implement practical steps toward an optimal learning environment in anatomy. These were based on core elements of ethical anatomy education and principles of trauma-informed care. Anatomy is conceptualized here as the "first clinical discipline," with relational interactions between anatomical educators, medical students, and body donors/patients. Essential prerequisites for the implementation of this work were support by the medical school leadership, open partnership between engaged students and faculty, faculty coordination, and peer-teaching. Specific interventions included pre-course faculty development on course philosophy and invitations to students to share their thoughts on anatomy. Student responses were integrated in course introductions, combined with a pre-dissection laboratory visit, an introductory guide, and a module on the history and ethics of anatomy. During the course, team-building activities were scheduled, and self-reflection encouraged, for example, through written exercises, and elective life-body drawing. Students' responses to the interventions were overall positive, but need further evaluation. This first attempt of a systematic implementation of an optimal learning environment in anatomy led to the identification of areas in need of adjustment.

Team Assessment in Laboratory Setting (TAILS): a Novel Approach Using Cadavers to Assess Collaborative Learning in the Gross Anatomy Lab

Team assessment in laboratory setting (TAILS) is a feasible and a novel method of testing the application of anatomical knowledge using the available institutional resources (cadavers) within the anatomy laboratory setting. For preclinical medical students, this method augments clinical authenticity and facilitates collaborative learning.
