Assessing Credibility: Quality Criteria for Patients, Caregivers, and the Public in Online Health Information-A Qualitative Study

The increasing reliance on the Internet for health information has raised concerns about patients using unreliable and potentially harmful content. This study aimed to establish quality criteria to assist patients, caregivers, and the public in evaluating the reliability of online health information. We conducted focus group workshops with 25 participants recruited across Canada, proficient in either English or French. The participants included 13 females and 12 males, with the majority having a college or higher level of education. Through an in-depth analysis comparing various aspects, the participants determined 6 quality criteria: authorship, reliability, usefulness, accessibility, readability, and privacy & confidentiality. The findings from this study present a comprehensive list of quality criteria that will contribute to developing evidence-based quality benchmarks and policy frameworks in multiple languages. These criteria are not only valid but also well-suited to the diverse needs and preferences of patients and the public, providing a reliable framework for evaluating online health information through an evidence-based approach.

The Impact of Online Social Behavior on College Student's Life Satisfaction: Chain-Mediating Effects of Perceived Social Support and Core Self-Evaluation

Purpose

To examine the influence of social behavior on college students' life satisfaction and the mediating effects of perceived social support and core self-evaluation.

Methods

779 college students were investigated with the online social behavior scale, life satisfaction scale, core self-evaluation scale and perceived social support scale.

Results

Online social behavior significantly positively predicted the perceived social support and life satisfaction; Perceived social support significantly positively predicted the core self-evaluation and life satisfaction; Core self-evaluation significantly positively predicted life satisfaction; Perceived social support and core self-evaluation have a significant chain mediating effect between online social behavior and life satisfaction.

Conclusion

This study confirmed the positive effects of online social behavior on college students, through improving college students' level of perceived social support and core self-evaluation to increase life satisfaction.

The Influence of Anthropomorphic Cues on Patients' Perceived Anthropomorphism, Social Presence, Trust Building, and Acceptance of Health Care Conversational Agents: Within-Subject Web-Based Experiment

BACKGROUND

The last decade has witnessed the rapid development of health care conversational agents (CAs); however, there are still great challenges in making health care CAs trustworthy and acceptable to patients.

OBJECTIVE

Focusing on intelligent guidance CAs, a type of health care CA for web-based patient triage, this study aims to investigate how anthropomorphic cues influence patients' perceived anthropomorphism and social presence of such CAs and evaluate how these perceptions facilitate their trust-building process and acceptance behavior.

METHODS

To test the research hypotheses, the video vignette methodology was used to evaluate patients' perceptions and acceptance of various intelligent guidance CAs. The anthropomorphic cues of CAs were manipulated in a 3×2 within-subject factorial experiment with 103 participants, with the factors of agent appearance (high, medium, and low anthropomorphic levels) and verbal cues (humanlike and machine-like verbal cues) as the within-subject variables.

RESULTS

The 2-way repeated measures ANOVA analysis indicated that the higher anthropomorphic level of agent appearance significantly increased mindful anthropomorphism (high level>medium level: 4.57 vs 4.27; P=.01; high level>low level: 4.57 vs 4.04; P<.001; medium level>low level: 4.27 vs 4.04; P=.04), mindless anthropomorphism (high level>medium level: 5.39 vs 5.01; P<.001; high level>low level: 5.39 vs 4.85; P<.001), and social presence (high level>medium level: 5.19 vs 4.83; P<.001; high level>low level: 5.19 vs 4.72; P<.001), and the higher anthropomorphic level of verbal cues significantly increased mindful anthropomorphism (4.83 vs 3.76; P<.001), mindless anthropomorphism (5.60 vs 4.57; P<.001), and social presence (5.41 vs 4.41; P<.001). Meanwhile, a significant interaction between agent appearance and verbal cues (.004) was revealed. Second, the partial least squares results indicated that privacy concerns were negatively influenced by social presence (β=-.375; t312=4.494) and mindful anthropomorphism (β=-.112; t312=1.970). Privacy concerns (β=-.273; t312=9.558), social presence (β=.265; t312=4.314), and mindless anthropomorphism (β=.405; t312=7.145) predicted the trust in CAs, which further promoted the intention to disclose information (β=.675; t312=21.163), the intention to continuously use CAs (β=.190; t312=4.874), and satisfaction (β=.818; t312=46.783).

CONCLUSIONS

The findings show that a high anthropomorphic level of agent appearance and verbal cues could improve the perceptions of mindful anthropomorphism and mindless anthropomorphism as well as social presence. Furthermore, mindless anthropomorphism and social presence significantly promoted patients' trust in CAs, and mindful anthropomorphism and social presence decreased privacy concerns. It is also worth noting that trust was an important antecedent and determinant of patients' acceptance of CAs, including their satisfaction, intention to disclose information, and intention to continuously use CAs.

How does social media use influence the mental health of pancreatic cancer patients: a chain mediating effect of online social support and psychological resilience

Background

Pancreatic cancer is an extremely malignant disease that poses a serious threat to the mental health of patients. Many cancer patients now use social media for online social support. However, the impact of social media on mental health is currently inconsistent in the academic community. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the mediating effects of online social support and psychological resilience in the relationship between social media use and mental health of pancreatic cancer patients.

Methods

Four hundred and twenty-five valid questionnaires were collected through convenience sampling. All data were processed using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 26.0. We examine the influence relationships among latent variables by constructing a structural equation model. Then SPSS Process Macro was used to test the chain mediating effect of the model.

Results

The results showed that (1) anxiety situations occurred in 22.2% of participants (N = 94), while the incidence of depression was 20.2% (N = 86). (2) Social media use positively influenced online social support (β = 0.990, p < 0.001), psychological resilience (β = 0.504, p < 0.001), and mental health (β = 0.330, p < 0.001); online social support positively influenced psychological resilience (β = 0.535, p < 0.001) and mental health (β = 0.354, p < 0.001); psychological resilience significantly and positively influenced mental health (β = 0.243, p < 0.001). (3) The chain mediating effect of online social support and psychological resilience was significant at 0.253 with a confidence interval of [0.178, 0.340].

Conclusion

Pancreatic cancer patients in China are exposed to a high burden of anxiety and depression, which requires urgent attention. Meanwhile, online social support and psychological resilience played a chain mediating role between social media use and mental health (anxiety and depression), and our results provide new insights and ways to support the mental health improvement of pancreatic cancer patients.

The role of personality traits in participation in an Online Cancer Community

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate how personality traits influence participative behaviour in an Online Cancer Community (OCC).

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 42 users of one of the largest OCCs in Australia – Cancer Council Online Community in New South Wales (NSW).

Findings

The results showed that extraversion, emotional stability and agreeableness traits influence posting behaviour, whereas the conscientiousness trait influences lurking behaviour. The openness trait did not affect either posters or lurkers’ online behaviour.

Research limitations/implications

The research highlights the pivotal role of personality traits in users’ decisions to post or lurk using a multi-theory perspective that combined the social exchange theory and the Five-Factor Model. Future studies should explore personality traits that can benefit from online participation in an OCC to transition only lurkers who may benefit from posting.

Practical implications

Insights from the study inform OCC practitioners and moderators when designing the OCC platform. Except for the openness trait, lurkers and posters exhibited different attitudes, which indicates that integrating these findings in the OCC design can facilitate adopting strategies to elicit more participation by OCC users.

Originality/value

This is the first study that explored the role of personality traits in users’ decisions to participate in an OCC.

Human information behavior during the Covid-19 health crisis. A literature review

The research carried out on human information behavior (HIB) during the Covid-19 health crisis was reviewed, with the premise that HIB and information practices allow humans to adapt to the changing circumstances of existence. A literature search was run on the LISTA and Google Scholar databases from middle March 2020 up to the end of March 2021. After filtering retrieved results, 52 studies were selected. Results are summarized into seven main themes, including the use of traditional and social media, infoveillance of search engines and social media activity, misinformation, disinformation and infodemics, and uncertainty and emotions. Results point to the need to carry out additional research in specific contexts and addressing vulnerable and marginalized groups. Further areas of inquiry include the interplay of emotions, knowledge and behaviors during the information seeking process, a better understanding of local knowledge and experiential knowledge, and the need to comprehend the limitations of ICT.

Role of gatekeeping on Facebook in creating information benefits for vulnerable, pregnant women in the rural United States

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate why and how gatekeepers on social networking sites (SNS) create what types of information benefits for gated, vulnerable, pregnant women in the rural United States.

Design/methodology/approach

This qualitative study adopts “network gatekeeping” as a theoretical lens to implement a combination of deductive and inductive qualitative approaches for analyzing in-depth interviews with members and administrators of a Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) Group on Facebook with a membership of over 500 pregnant women in rural Appalachia in the United States.

Findings

The VBAC group administrators' (a) vision of transforming the existing doctor-centric birth culture to a more mother-centric birth culture in the rural United States, (b) expertise and experience in healthcare and (c) valuing scientific, evidence-based information lead to recurring, authoritative but evolving manifestations of combinations of nine network gatekeeping mechanisms. Implementations of nine network gatekeeping mechanisms (i.e. localization, infrastructure, cost effect, channeling, censorship, regulation, editorial, user-interaction and value adding mechanisms) help VBAC group administrators control interactions and information on the group, thereby creating 16 information benefits for the gated, vulnerable women before, during and after pregnancy.

Originality/value

This sociological study of network gatekeeping posits and proves an “information value chain” (i.e. Why to create information benefits? – How to create information benefits? – What types of information benefits?) for vulnerable, pregnant women on Facebook. Rarely any study shows the role of network gatekeeping mechanisms in implementing an information value chain.

Community attachment and emotional well-being: an empirical study of an online community for people with diabetes

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate how community attachment to an OHC reduces the OHC users' emotional distress and therefore improves their emotional well-being.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey study was conducted in one of the largest online health communities (OHC) for people with diabetes.

Findings

OHC participants are likely to experience reduced emotional distress when they have developed an attachment to the community. This attachment is, in turn, positively associated with the normative expectations of reciprocity and the affective feeling of gratitude. However, some commonly used behavioral measures of community participation, such as visit frequency and membership tenure, have little to do with either community attachment or reduced emotional distress.

Research limitations/implications

The research highlights the pivotal role of community attachment in appraising the much-debated benefits of OHCs. However, the cross-sectional survey study has its limitations in terms of establishing causality.

Practical implications

OHC managers need to look beyond some of the commonly used metrics, such as monthly visits and number of new postings, and focus on fostering a sense of attachment among existing users in order to fulfill the OHC's potential of emotional support. Our study implies that design features facilitating reciprocation and gratitude expression among users can lead to a strong emotional bond.

Originality/value

This is one of the first studies on the antecedents of community attachment and the relationship between community attachment and emotional distress in the context of OHC.

The effectiveness of online interventions for patients with gynecological cancer: An integrative review

OBJECTIVE

With advantages of easy accessibility and various multimedia interactivity formats, online interventions have been developed to improve health outcomes for patients with a variety of gynecological cancers, but evidence regarding their effectiveness for such patients is not well-understood. This review aimed to synthesize study findings that were published in English or Chinese regarding the effectiveness of online interventions on the quality of life, symptom distress, social support, psychological distress, sexual well-being, and body image in patients with gynecological cancer.

METHODS

This integrative review adhered to five steps, including problem identification, literature search, quality appraisal, data analysis, and presentation. Ten electronic databases (MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, PubMed, Wiley Online Journals, Web of Science, OVID, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Cochrane Library) were searched from the inception of each database to April 2019 in accordance with the rigid and explicit inclusion and exclusion criteria. Version 2018 of the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used for the quality appraisal of the articles.

RESULTS

Out of 276 articles, 24 potentially eligible articles were initially identified. A manual search retrieved an additional eligible three articles. After nine articles were excluded, ten quantitative, six qualitative, and two mixed-methods articles were finally included. Online interventions improved quality of life and body images in patients with gynecological cancer, but there were inconclusive effects on symptom distress, social support, psychological distress, and sexual well-being.

CONCLUSIONS

Online interventions have been increasingly used as clinically promising interventions to promote health outcomes among patients with gynecological cancer. Studies with more rigorous designs and sufficient sample sizes are needed to elucidate the effectiveness of such online interventions. Healthcare workers can incorporate existing or new online interventions into their routine care to improve health outcomes for patients with gynecological cancer.

Cues for Increasing Social Presence for Mobile Health App Adoption

As mobile health apps become increasingly influential in daily life, they present an important opportunity for health communication for disease prevention. User impressions of app designs are influential for adoption. Using cues to increase feelings of being with others (social presence) is one way to encourage favorable impressions and health app adoption. To examine the impact of social context cues (conversation cues vs. community cues vs. no cue control) on two forms of social presence (emergent and transcendent social presence), we conducted an online experiment (n = 587) with US adults. We also examined the indirect effects of conversation and community cues through social presence on app trust, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and intentions to use the app. We found that conversational cues elicited intended feelings for new, emergent interactions and that community cues increased perceptions of ongoing or established social formations for transcendent interactions. These cues also had positive indirect effects for increased trust, perceived usefulness, and intentions to use the health apps and should be considered when developing mHealth to improve uptake and delivery of health promotion online.

Characteristics of the social networks of families living with parental cancer and support provided

OBJECTIVE

To examine the characteristics of the social networks of families living with parental cancer and the kind of social support they provide compared with what the families report having received.

BACKGROUND

Parental cancers are highly distressing for both parents and children. Among other concerns, families report a severe lack of social support. However, we know little about these families' private social networks, nor support provided and received as reported by network members and the family.

METHODS

Using a descriptive cross-sectional design, 16 families living with parental cancer and 130 of their network members participated. Healthy parents and network members filled out The Assistance Questionnaire-Receivers of support (AQR)/The Assistance Questionnaire-Providers of Support (AQP).

RESULTS

Network members were mainly resourceful friends (44%) and family members (42%). Only 1/3 became supporters at diagnosis, and nearly 50% had to be asked. Supporters provided a variety of types of help, especially emotional support. A match between the perception of the healthy parent and that of the network members was found for provided (p = 0.211) and received (p = 0.741) support. Supporters were satisfied with their provided support, experiencing it as rewarding and associated with few negative aspects. The STROBE checklist for observational studies was followed in reporting the results.

CONCLUSIONS

The social networks, being mainly family and friends, were able to provide different types of help, especially emotional support. A useful suggestion may be to involve supporters at an earlier stage, providing more practical support.

RELEVANCE FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE

Nurses are in a unique position to promote social support for families living with parental cancer by embracing a network focus, by emphasising the importance and potential of social support, by helping families to map their network and by teaching them how to be explicit in their requests for support.
