Structure-Dependent Eco-Toxicity of Vegetable Tannin

Vegetable tannin is widely applied in various industries, in agriculture, and in water treatment as a natural polyphenolic compound; however, little data has been collected concerning the relationship between structure and eco-toxicity. Here, the toxicity of six commercial tannin and three model chemicals was assessed using Photobacterium phosphoreum. Two kinds of hydrolyzed tannin displayed higher bioluminescence inhibition than four kinds of condensed tannin, and the model chemical of hydrolyzed tannin also showed greater toxicity than those of condensed tannin, indicating the structure dependent eco-toxicity of vegetable tannin. The reactive toxicity mechanism was proposed, which was illustrated by molecular simulations based on the model chemicals and luciferase.

Synthesis of MAuAg (M = Ni, Pd, or Pt) and NiAuCu Heterotrimetallic Complexes Ligated by a Tritopic Carbanionic N-Heterocyclic Carbene

Heterotrimetallic complexes (NiAuAg, PdAuAg, PtAuAg, and NiAuCu) containing a tritopic N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) have been synthesized for the first time through the deprotonation and metalation of heterodimetallic complexes and were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The carbene character of the donor groups in the tritopic NHC complexes was established on the basis of structural and NMR analyses.

New frontiers: 1,4-diphosphinines and P-bridged bis(NHCs)

This review describes synthetic concepts and breakthroughs in 1,4-diphosphinine and related P-bridged bis(NHCs) chemistry, covering the last four decades, starting from monocyclic 1,4-dihydro-1,4-diphosphinines in the early 80s to the most recent and promising achievements of tricyclic 1,4-dihydro-1,4-diphosphinines and tricyclic 1,4-diphosphinines. Theoretical aspects are presented for 1,4-dihydro- and 1,4-diphosphinines considering HOMO LUMO situations as well as the degree of aromaticity. Moreover, fundamental characteristics of analytical data of these compounds are highlighted with special focus on substituent effects, structural aspects and trends of electrophilicity. The two P-centers and the heterocyclic rings of 1,4-dihydro- and 1,4-diphosphinines constitute a broad platform for substitution, reduction/oxidation, alkylation, complexation and cycloaddition reactions, i.e., a comprehensive compilation of reactivity aspects is presented. Furthermore, very recent developments in the synthesis and reactivity of tricyclic PV/V- and PIII/III-bridged bis(imidazole-2-ylidenes) will be discussed together with new perspectives derived from an antiaromatic middle ring. In total, our intention is to show new frontiers, i.e., new synthetic paths, thus creating novel opportunities for potential applications in molecular and materials chemistry.

A rigid anionic Janus bis(NHC) - new opportunities in NHC chemistry

A phosphanido-type bridged bis(imidazolium) salt, readily prepared in two steps via reductive deselenization of a tricyclic 1,4-diphosphinine diselone, affords access to a novel anionic P-functional tricyclic bis(NHC) via deprotonation. The former also offers a P-functionalization/deprotonation sequence to access the first mixed P-substituted tricyclic bis(NHCs), as well as coordination of the phosphorus centers to rhodium(i) fragments.

Functionalised N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands in Bimetallic Architectures

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have become immensely successful ligands in coordination chemistry and homogeneous catalysis due to their strong terminal σ-donor properties. However, by targeting NHC ligands with additional functionalisation, a new area of NHC coordination chemistry has developed that has enabled NHCs to be used to build up bimetallic and multimetallic architectures. This minireview covers the development of functionalised NHC ligands that incorporate additional donor sites in order to coordinate two or more metal atoms. This can be through the N-atom of the NHC ring, through a donor group attached to the N-atom or the carbon backbone, coordination of the π-bond or an annulated π-donor on the backbone, or through direct metalation of the backbone.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Adducts of Main Group Elements and Their Use as Ligands in Transition Metal Chemistry

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) are nowadays ubiquitous and indispensable in many research fields, and it is not possible to imagine modern transition metal and main group element chemistry without the plethora of available NHCs with tailor-made electronic and steric properties. While their suitability to act as strong ligands toward transition metals has led to numerous applications of NHC complexes in homogeneous catalysis, their strong σ-donating and adaptable π-accepting abilities have also contributed to an impressive vitalization of main group chemistry with the isolation and characterization of NHC adducts of almost any element. Formally, NHC coordination to Lewis acids affords a transfer of nucleophilicity from the carbene carbon atom to the attached exocyclic moiety, and low-valent and low-coordinate adducts of the p-block elements with available lone pairs and/or polarized carbon-element π-bonds are able to act themselves as Lewis basic donor ligands toward transition metals. Accordingly, the availability of a large number of novel NHC adducts has not only produced new varieties of already existing ligand classes but has also allowed establishment of numerous complexes with unusual and often unprecedented element-metal bonds. This review aims at summarizing this development comprehensively and covers the usage of N-heterocyclic carbene adducts of the p-block elements as ligands in transition metal chemistry.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes of Copper, Nickel, and Cobalt

The emergence of N-heterocyclic carbenes as ligands across the Periodic Table had an impact on various aspects of the coordination, organometallic, and catalytic chemistry of the 3d metals, including Cu, Ni, and Co, both from the fundamental viewpoint but also in applications, including catalysis, photophysics, bioorganometallic chemistry, materials, etc. In this review, the emergence, development, and state of the art in these three areas are described in detail.

Homo- and Heteropolymetallic Complexes of the Hybrid, Ambidentate N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligand IMes-acac

The anionic 5-acetylimidazol-2-ylidene-4-olate 1 ^-, named as "IMes-acac", is composed of fused diaminocarbene and acetylacetonato units in the same IMes-based imidazolyl ring. The bifunctional compound 1 ^- is shown to act as an effective, ditopic bridging ligand for transition metal centers. Several new complexes supported by this ligand were prepared, including the complex [RuCl(p-Cym)(κ² O,O-1·H)](BF₄) (2), which can be regarded as a metallated imidazolium salt, the homobimetallic complex [((COD)Rh)(RhCl(COD))(μ-1κ² O,O:2κ¹ C-1)] (4), the heterobimetallic complexes [((p-Cym)ClRu)(RhCl(COD))(μ-1κ² O,O:2κ¹ C-1)] (3), [((p-Cym)ClRu)(RhCl(CO)₂)(μ-1κ² O,O:2κ¹ C-1)] (5), [((p-Cym)ClRu)(Cu(IPr))(μ-1κ² O,O:2κ¹ C-1)] (9), the anionic homoleptic Cu(I) complexes [Cu(κ¹ C-1)₂]K ([10]K) and [Cu(κ¹ C-1)₂](NEt₄) ([10](NEt₄)), and the heterotrimetallic complex [((p-Cym)RuCl)₂(Cu)(μ-1κ² O,O:3κ¹ C-1)(μ-2κ² O,O:3κ¹ C-1)](PF₆) (11). Preliminary studies on the possible preparation of supramolecular metallopolymers and electrochemical studies on the series of complexes are also reported.

Recent Advances in Imidazoliumyl-Substituted Phosphorus Compounds

This review aims to highlight the recent developments in the chemistry of selected imidazoliumyl-substituted phosphorus compounds. The synthetic approaches for their preparation with phosphorus in various oxidation states and coordination environments are discussed. Their intriguing properties and versatile chemistry strongly depends on the bonding motif at the P atoms, which is given special focus.

Smart N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands in Catalysis

It is well-recognized that N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have provided a new dimension to the design of homogeneous catalysts. Part of the success of this type of ligands resides in the limitless access to a variety of topologies with tuned electronic properties, but also in the ability of a family of NHCs that are able to adapt their properties to the specific requirements of individual catalytic transformations. The term "smart" is used here to refer to switchable, multifunctional, adaptable, or tunable ligands and, in general, to all those ligands that are able to modify their steric or electronic properties to fulfill the requirements of a defined catalytic reaction. The purpose of this review is to comprehensively describe all types of smart NHC ligands by focusing attention on the catalytically relevant ligand-based reactivity.

Post-coordination backbone functionalization of an imidazol-2-ylidene and its application to synthesize heteropolymetallic complexes incorporating the ambidentate IMesCO2−ligand

The C4-carboxylation of the archetypal IMes ligand was achieved directly on its complexed form for the first time, and the resulting ambidentate IMes^CO2−ligand was exploited for the formation of heteropolymetallic complexes.

Synthesis and reactions of C-phosphanylated thiazol-2-thiones

Regioselective synthesis of the P(iii) substituted thiazole-2-thione I is presented. Oxidation of I resulted in P(V) chalcogenide thiazole-2-thiones (E = O, S, Se). Desulfurization of I (E = O) using hydrogenperoxide led to the first C-phosphanoyl thiazolium salt II. Deprotonation of II and reaction with cyclooctadiene rhodium(i) chloride dimer yielded thiazole-2-ylidene rhodium(i) complex III.

Phosphinosilylenes as a novel ligand system for heterobimetallic complexes

The first heterobimetallic complexes comprising interconnected silylene and phosphine donors are reported. In a stepwise fashion, first the silylene coordinates to iron and subsequently the phosphine coordinates to tungsten. Another heterobimetallic complex can be obtained by the insertion of platinum into the P–H bond.

Cationic 5-phosphonio-substituted N-heterocyclic carbenes

Cationic NHCs featuring a phosphonium moiety in the 5-position are prepared from the reaction of imidazolium salts with a tert. phosphane. They are used as ligands for the preparation of transition metal complexes, dehydrogenation reactions of prim. and sec. phosphanes and the preparation of a N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO).

IMes-acac: hybrid combination of diaminocarbene and acetylacetonato sub-units into a new anionic ambidentate NHC ligand

The mesoionic 5-acetylimidazolium-4-olate serves as precursor for an anionic, hybrid NHC, "IMes-acac", consisting of fused diaminocarbene and acetylacetonato units, whose respective coordination abilities are evaluated by the formation of a series of representative copper(I) complexes illustrating the ambidentate character of the ligand.

Extending N-heterocyclic carbene ligands into the third dimension: a new type of hybrid phosphazane/NHC system

A simple, "click" synthetic approach to a new type of hybrid phosph(III)azane/NHC system is described. The presence of the phosphazane P2N2 ring unit, with P atoms flanking the NCN fragment and with this ring perpendicular to the binding site of the NHC, provides unique opportunities for modifying the electronic and steric character of these carbenes.

From bis(imidazole-2-thion-4-yl)phosphane to a flexible P-bridged bis(NHC) ligand and its silver complex
