Abstract
The compatibility of crystallinity, stability, and functionality in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is challenging but significant in reticular chemistry and materials science. Herein, it is presented for the first time a strategy to synthesize directly amino-functionalized COF with stable benzodiimidazole linkage by regioselective one-step cyclization and aromatization. Bandrowski's base with two types of amino groups is used as a unique monomer, providing not only construction sites for the material framework through specific region-selective reaction, but also amino active sites for functionality, which is usually difficult to achieve directly in COF synthesis because amino groups are the participants in COF bonding. In addition, the aromatic benzodiimidazole rings and the large conjugated system of the product effectively improve the crystallinity and stability, so that the as-prepared BBCOF remains unchanged in both acid and base solutions, which is obviously better than the conventional imine-linked COF. Impressively, the significantly enhanced conjugation degree by the benzodiimidazole structure also endows BBCOF with an efficient photocatalytic reduction of uranyl ion, with removal rate as high as 96.6% in single-ion system and 95% in multi-ion system. This study is of great importance to the design and synthesis of functional COFs with a commendable trade-off among crystallinity, stability, and functionality.

Abstract
The ability of 1-hydroxy-1H-imidazoles to exist in the form of two prototropic tautomers, the N-hydroxy and the N-oxide forms, can be utilized in the design of new types of ESIPT-fluorophores (ESIPT=excited state intramolecular proton transfer). Here we report the first example of 1-hydroxy-1H-imidazole-based ESIPT-fluorophores, 1-hydroxy-5-methyl-2,4-di(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazole (HL), featuring a short intramolecular hydrogen bond O-H⋅⋅⋅N (O⋅⋅⋅N 2.56 Å) as a pre-requisite for ESIPT. The emission of HL originates from the anti-Kasha S2 →S0 fluorescence in the N-oxide form as a result of a large S2 -S1 energy gap slowing down the S2 →S1 internal conversion. Due to an energy barrier between the N-hydroxy and N-oxide forms in the ground state, the HL molecules can be trapped and photoexcited in the N-oxide form leading to the Stokes shift of ca. 60 nm which is the smallest among known ESIPT-fluorophores.

Abstract
In this work, we probe into the photo-induced excited state hydrogen bonding interactions and excited state proton transfer (ESPT) behaviors for a representative benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bisimidazole derivative (i.e., 2-hydroxyphenyl-substituted benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bisimidazole (HPBB)) compound. In view of aprotic solvents with different polarities, cyclohexane (CYH), dichloromethane (DCM) and acetonitrile (MeCN) solvents are considered. Analyzing hydrogen-bond geometrical parameters, infrared (IR) vibrational spectra, Mayer bond order and predicting hydrogen bonding energy (E(HB)), we verify dual hydrogen bonds of HPBB are strengthened in S1 state. Particularly, in nonpolar solvent, the enhanced excited state hydrogen bonds become more obvious. The intriguing charge redistribution and frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) reveal hydrogen bonding acceptance ability of acceptor moieties becomes stronger, which plays a crucial role in capturing hydroxyl proton via photoexcitation. To check and explore ESIPT mechanism, we present the solvent polarity dependent asynchronous excited state intramolecular double proton transfer (ESIDPT) mechanism. That is, nonpolar solvent promotes excited state intramolecular single proton transfer (ESISPT) process for HPBB, while polar solvent contributes to ESIDPT behavior with the primary single proton-transfer product in S1 state. This work not only makes a rational attribution to experimental phenomena, but also clarifies detailed excited state behaviors for HPBB and presents regulating ESIPT mechanism via solvent polarity.

Abstract
Searching for eight-membered ring π-conjugated hydrogen bonding (8-MR H-bonding) systems with excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) property is seminal and synthetically challenging. In this work, a series of π-conjugated molecules (8-HB-1, 8-HB-L1 and 8-HB-2) potentially possessing 8-MR H-bonding are strategically designed, synthesized and characterized. The configurations of these three potential molecules are checked by their X-ray structures, among which 8-HB-L1 (a structurally locked 8-HB-1 core chromophore) is proved to be an 8-MR H-bonding system, whereas 8-HB-1 and 8-HB-2 are too sterically hindered to form the 8-MR intramolecular H-bond. The ESIPT property of 8-HB-L1 is confirmed by the dual fluorescence consisting of normal and proton-transfer tautomer emissions. The insight into the ESIPT process of 8-HB-L1 is provided by femtosecond fluorescence upconversion measurements together with computational simulation. The results demonstrate for the first time a successful synthetic route to attain the 8-MR H-bonding molecule 8-HB-L1 with ESIPT property.

Abstract
Five centrosymmetric and one dipolar pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles, possessing either two or one strongly electron-withdrawing nitro group have been synthesized in a straightforward manner from simple building blocks. For the symmetric compounds, the nitroaryl groups induced spontaneous breaking of inversion symmetry in the excited state, thereby leading to large solvatofluorochromism. To study the origin of this effect, the series employed peripheral structural motifs that control the degree of conjugation via altering of dihedral angle between the 4-nitrophenyl moiety and the electron-rich core. We observed that for compounds with a larger dihedral angle, the fluorescence quantum yield decreased quickly when exposed to even moderately polar solvents. Reducing the dihedral angle (i.e., placing the nitrobenzene moiety in the same plane as the rest of the molecule) moderated the dependence on solvent polarity so that the dye exhibited significant emission, even in THF. To investigate at what stage the symmetry breaking occurs, we measured two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra and 2PA cross-sections (σ2PA ) for all six compounds. The 2PA transition profile of the dipolar pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole, followed the corresponding one-photon absorption (1PA) spectrum, which provided an estimate of the change of the permanent electric dipole upon transition, ≈18 D. The nominally symmetric compounds displayed an allowed 2PA transition in the wavelength range of 700-900 nm. The expansion via a triple bond resulted in the largest peak value, σ2PA =770 GM, whereas altering the dihedral angle had no effect other than reducing the peak value two- or even three-fold. In the S0 →S1 transition region, the symmetric structures also showed a partial overlap between 2PA and 1PA transitions in the long-wavelength wing of the band, from which a tentative, relatively small dipole moment change, 2-7 D, was deduced, thus suggesting that some small symmetry breaking may be possible in the ground state, even before major symmetry breaking occurs in the excited state.

Abstract
The synthesis and photophysical properties of three tris(N-salicylideneaniline) (TSA) compounds containing 1,3,5-triarylbenzene, -tristyrylbenzene, and -tris(arylethynyl)benzene core units are reported. The TSA compounds underwent efficient excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in solution and in solid state due to the preformed C=N⋅⋅⋅H-O hydrogen-bonded motifs of the structures. Steady-state fluorescence emission spectra of the TSA molecules revealed dual bands only in DMSO, and large Stokes shifts in other polar aprotic and protic solvents. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopic measurements in THF revealed lifetime values in the range of 14-16 ps for the excited-state keto-tautomer. The TSA compounds are also responsive to metal ions (Cu2+ and Zn2+ ) in DMSO, exhibit enhanced aggregate-induced emission (AIE) properties in DMSO/water mixtures, and are highly luminescent in the solid state.

Abstract
Solid state emitters based on excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) have been attracting considerable interest since the past few years in the field of optoelectronic devices because of their desirable unique photophysical properties. The photophysical properties of the solid state ESIPT fluorophores determine their possible applicability in functional materials. Less fluorescence quantum efficiencies and short fluorescence lifetime in the solid state are the shortcomings of the existing ESIPT solid state emitters. Designing of ESIPT chromophores with high fluorescence quantum efficiencies and a long fluorescence lifetime in the solid state is a challenging issue because of the unclear mechanism of the solid state emitters in the excited state. Reported design strategies, detailed photophysical properties, and their applications will help in assisting researchers to overcome existing challenges in designing novel solid state ESIPT fluorophores for promising applications. This review highlights recently developed solid state ESIPT emitters with focus on molecular design strategies and their photophysical properties, reported in the last five years.

Abstract
Photoinduced intramolecular direct arylation allows structurally unique compounds containing phenanthro[9',10':4,5]imidazo[1,2-f]phenanthridine and imidazo[1,2-f]phenanthridine skeletons, which mediate excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), to be efficiently synthesized. The developed polycyclic aromatics demonstrate that the combination of five-membered ring structures with a rigid arrangement between a proton donor and a proton acceptor provides a means for attaining large fluorescence quantum yields, exceeding 0.5, even in protic solvents. Steady-state and time-resolved UV/Vis spectroscopy reveals that, upon photoexcitation, the prepared protic heteroaromatics undergo ESIPT, converting them efficiently into their excited-state keto tautomers, which have lifetimes ranging from about 5 to 10 ns. The rigidity of their structures, which suppresses nonradiative decay pathways, is believed to be the underlying reason for the nanosecond lifetimes of these singlet excited states and the observed high fluorescence quantum yields. Hydrogen bonding with protic solvents does not interfere with the excited-state dynamics and, as a result, there is no difference between the occurrences of ESIPT processes in MeOH versus cyclohexane. Acidic media has a more dramatic effect on suppressing ESIPT by protonating the proton acceptor. As a result, in the presence of an acid, a larger proportion of the fluorescence of ESIPT-capable compounds originates from their enol excited states.

Abstract
The absorption and fluorescence spectra of two analogues of 10-hydroxybenzo[h]quinoline (10-HBQ), namely, 1-hydroxy-7-methylbenzo[c]acridine (HMBA) and 4-hydroxybenzo[c]phenanthridine (HBPA), were studied in n-alkane matrices at 5 K. Considerable energy separation between the onsets of the spectra and broadening of the bands was an indication that intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) takes place at such a low temperature. DFT and ab initio methods were used to calculate the electronic transition energies and oscillator strengths and the vibronic structure of the electronic spectra. Shortcomings in our knowledge of the shape of the potential energy surface for ESIPT systems are highlighted in the context of the discussion of the shape of the electronic spectra. The π-expansion of the 10-HBQ chromophore achieved by adding a benzene moiety at various positions adjacent to the pyridine ring led to compounds possessing diverse photophysical properties, ranging from the non-ESIPT strongly fluorescent molecule of 10-hydroxy-1-azaperylene to weakly emitting (or nonemitting) molecules, where ESIPT occurs very efficiently.
