Stabilization of the Triphosphallyl Ligand η3-P3{P(O)H} at Iridium via Alkaline Activation of P4

Palladium(II) complexes of bis(diphosphene) with different coordination behaviors

Organophosphorus compounds possessing a P-P double-bond character are intriguing materials in coordination chemistry because it is possible to form a variety of coordination modes from the π-bond in addition to the lone pairs. We report herein the complexation of a new bidentate ligand, ethylene-tethered bis(binaphthyldiphosphene) (S,S)-2, with palladium(II) species. The reaction of (S,S)-2 with [Pd(π-allyl)(cod)](SbF₆) and PdCl₂(cod) afforded η¹/η¹-bis(diphosphene) complex 7 and η¹-diphosphene/η²-phosphanylphosphide complex 8, respectively. The latter was characterized by a chloride migration from the palladium atom to a phosphorus atom due to the high electron-accepting character of the PP moiety. Theoretical calculations revealed the migration process and nature of complex 8.

Transformations of the cyclo-P4 ligand in [Cp'''Co(η4-P4)]

The reactivity of the cyclo-P₄ ligand complex [Cp′′′Co(η⁴-P₄)] (1) (Cp′′′ = 1,2,4-tri-tert-butyl-cyclopentadienyl) towards reduction and main group nucleophiles was investigated. By using K[CpFe(CO)₂], a selective reduction to the dianionic complex [(Cp′′′Co)₂(μ,η³:η³-P₈)]²⁻ (2) was achieved. The reaction of 1 with ^tBuLi and LiCH₂SiMe₃ as carbon-based nucleophiles yielded [Cp′′′Co(η³-P₄R)]⁻ (R = ^tBu (4), CH₂SiMe₃ (7)), which, depending on the reaction conditions, undergo subsequent reactions with another equivalent of 1 to form [(Cp′′′Co)₂(μ,η³:η³-P₈R)]⁻ (R = ^tBu (5), CH₂SiMe₃ (8)). In the case of 4, a different pathway was observed, namely a dimerisation followed by a fragmentation into [Cp′′′Co(η³-P₅^tBu₂)]⁻ (6) and [Cp′′′Co(η³-P₃)]⁻ (3). With OH⁻ as an oxygen-based nucleophile, the synthesis of [Cp′′′Co(η³-P₄(O)H)]⁻ (9) was achieved. All compounds were characterized by X-ray crystal structure analysis, NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Their electronic structures and reaction behavior were elucidated by DFT calculations.

The reaction behavior of [Cp2Mo2(CO)4(μ,η2:2-P2)] and [Cp′′Ta(CO)2(η4-P4)] towards hydroxide and tert-butyl nucleophiles

The reaction behavior of [Cp₂Mo₂(CO)₄(μ,η^2:2-P₂)] (1) and [Cp′′Ta(CO)₂(η⁴-P₄)] (2), respectively, towards the anions OH⁻ and ^tBu⁻ are reported, which leads to a selective functionalisation of one P atom.

A cyclo-P6 Ligand Complex for the Formation of Planar 2D Layers

The all-phosphorus analogue of benzene, stabilized as middle deck in triple-decker complexes, is a promising building block for the formation of graphene-like sheet structures. The reaction of [(CpMo)2 (μ,η(6) :η(6)-P6)] (1) with CuX (X=Br, I) leads to self-assembly into unprecedented 2D networks of [{(CpMo)2P6}(CuBr)4 ]n (2) and [{(CpMo)2 P6}(CuI)2]n (3). X-ray structural analyses show a unique deformation of the previously planar cyclo-P6 ligand. This includes bending of one P atom in an envelope conformation as well as a bisallylic distortion. Despite this, 2 and 3 form planar layers. Both polymers were furthermore analyzed by (31)P{(1)H} magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy, revealing signals corresponding to six non-equivalent phosphorus sites. A peak assignment is achieved by 2D correlation spectra as well as by DFT chemical shift computations.

Activation of white phosphorus by low-valent group 5 complexes: formation and reactivity of cyclo-P4 inverted sandwich compounds

We report the synthesis and comprehensive study of the electronic structure of a unique series of dinuclear group 5 cyclo-tetraphosphide inverted sandwich complexes. White phosphorus (P4) reacts with niobium(III) and tantalum(III) β-diketiminate (BDI) tert-butylimido complexes to produce the bridging cyclo-P4 phosphide species {[(BDI)(N(t)Bu)M]2(μ-η(3):η(3)P4)} (1, M = Nb; 2, M = Ta) in fair yields. 1 is alternatively synthesized upon hydrogenolysis of (BDI)Nb(N(t)Bu)Me2 in the presence of P4. The trinuclear side product {[(BDI)NbN(t)Bu]3(μ-P12)} (3) is also identified. Protonation of 1 with [HOEt2][B(C6F5)4] does not occur at the phosphide ring but rather involves the BDI ligand to yield {[(BDI(#))Nb(N(t)Bu)]2(μ-η(3):η(3)P4)}[B(C6F5)4]2 (4). The monocation and dication analogues {[(BDI)(N(t)Bu)Nb]2(μ-η(3):η(3)P4)}{B(Ar(F))4}n (5, n = 1; 6, n = 2) are both synthesized by oxidation of 1 with AgBAr(F). DFT calculations were used in combination with EPR and UV-visible spectroscopies to probe the nature of the metal-phosphorus bonding.
