Gold nanodoughnut as an outstanding nanoheater for photothermal applications

Photoinduced hyperthermia is a cancer therapy technique that induces death to cancerous cells via heat generated by plasmonic nanoparticles. While previous studies have shown that some nanoparticles can be effective at killing cancer cells under certain conditions, there is still a necessity (or the need) to improve its heating efficiency. In this work, we perform a detailed theoretical study comparing the thermoplasmonic response of the most effective nanoparticle geometries up to now with a doughnut-shaped nanoparticle. We numerically demonstrate that the latter exhibits a superior tunable photothermal response in practical illumination conditions (unpolarized light). Furthermore, we show that nanoparticle heating in fluidic environments, i.e., nanoparticles undergoing Brownian rotations, strongly depends on the particle orientation with respect to the illumination source. We conclude that nanodoughnuts are the best nanoheaters in our set of structures, with an average temperature increment 40% higher than the second best nanoheater (nanodisk). Furthermore, nanodoughnuts feature a weak dependence on orientation, being therefore ideal candidates for photothermal therapy applications. Finally, we present a designing guide, covering a wide range of toroid designs, which can help on its experimental implementation.

Tailoring Optical Properties of a Large-Area Plasmonic Gold Nanoring Array Pattern

A new fabrication route, which combines nanosphere lithography with silicon-based clean-room microfabrication processes, has been developed to produce large-area long-range ordered gold nanoring array patterns in a controllable fashion. Both the experimentation and the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation show that the surface plasmon resonance peak (SPR) of the nanoring array pattern can be tuned systematically in a large spectral range by varying the geometry parameters such as the ring thickness, the ring height, the ringer outer diameter, and the gap between neighboring rings. For the Au nanoring arrays with a large gap in the absence of plasmon coupling between neighboring rings, the local electromagnetic (EM) field enhancement occurs at both the outer and inner surfaces of individual nanorings; and the periodicity of Au nanoring array has no any effect on the plasmonic properties. For the Au nanoring arrays with a small gap, plasmon coupling takes place between neighboring rings. As a result, the characteristic plasmonic band is split into two new peaks corresponding to a bonding SPR mode and an antibonding SPR mode. The local EM field enhancement becomes stronger with a decrease in the gap between neighboring rings, but the SPR peaks shift away. Therefore, to maximize the surface-enhanced Raman scattering signal, the geometry parameters of the Au nanoring array need to be tuned to balance the contributions from the resonance excitation (spectral overlap) and the local EM field enhancement.

Seed-mediated growth of Au nanorings with size control on Pd ultrathin nanosheets and their tunable surface plasmonic properties

Nanorings made of noble metals such as Au and Ag have attracted particular interest in plasmonic properties since they allow remarkable tunability of plasmon resonance wavelengths associated with their unique structural features. Unfortunately, most of the syntheses for Au nanorings involve complex procedures and/or require highly specialized and expensive facilities. Here, we report a seed-mediated approach for selective deposition of Au nanorings on the periphery of Pd seeds with the structure of an ultrathin nanosheet through the island growth mode. In combination with selective etching of Pd nanosheets, Au nanorings are eventually produced. We can control the outer diameter and wall thickness of the nanorings by simply varying the size of the Pd nanosheets and reaction time. By taking the advantage of this size controllability, the nanorings show tunable surface plasmonic properties in the near infrared (NIR) region arising from both the in-plane dipole and face resonance modes. Owing to their good surface plasmonic properties, the nanorings show substantially enhanced surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) performance for rhodamine 6G, and are therefore confirmed as good SERS substrates to detect trace amounts of molecules.
