Towardsmeso-Ester BODIPYs with Aggregation-Induced Emission Properties: The Effect of Substitution Positions

Cy5 Dye Cassettes Exhibit Through-Bond Energy Transfer and Enable Ratiometric Fluorescence Sensing

The chemosensor literature contains many reports of fluorescence sensing using polyaromatic hydrocarbon fluorophores such as pyrene, tetraphenylethylene, or polyaryl(ethynylene), where the fluorophore is excited with ultraviolet light (<400 nm) and emits in the visible region of 400-500 nm. There is a need for general methods that convert these "turn-on" hydrocarbon fluorescent sensors into ratiometric sensing paradigms. One simple strategy is to mix the responsive hydrocarbon sensor with a second non-responsive dye that is excited by ultraviolet light but emits at a distinctly longer wavelength and thus acts as a reference signal. Five new cyanine dye cassettes were created by covalently attaching a pyrene, tetraphenylethylene, or biphenyl(ethynylene) component as the ultraviolet-absorbing energy donor directly to the pentamethine chain of a deep-red cyanine (Cy5) energy acceptor. Fluorescence emission studies showed that these Cy5-cassettes exhibited large pseudo-Stokes shifts and high through-bond energy transfer efficiencies upon excitation with ultraviolet light. Practical potential was demonstrated with two examples of ratiometric fluorescence sensing using a single ultraviolet excitation wavelength. One example mixed a Cy5-cassette with a pyrene-based fluorescent indicator that responded to changes in Cu2+ concentration, and the other example mixed a Cy5-cassette with the fluorescent pH sensing dye, pyranine.

Engineering BODIPY-based near-infrared nanoparticles with large Stokes shifts and aggregation-induced emission characteristics for organelle specific bioimaging

Lipid droplets (LDs) and lysosomes, as two important subcellular organelles, play specific and indispensable roles in various cellular processes. The development of efficient LD- and lysosome-specific fluorescent bio-probes is of great importance. However, current commercial lipid droplet- (LD) and lysosome-specific fluorescent specific bio-probes often suffer from the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, short absorption and emission wavelengths, poor photostability and low specificity. Herein, a typical ACQ luminogen BODIPY was directly conjugated to strong electron donating triarylamine units at its α-positions, giving near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent materials TPAB and 2TPAB with aggregation-induced emission (AIE). Both TPAB and 2TPAB nanoparticles were obtained by self-assembly, and showed NIR emissions, large Stokes shifts, good photostability and two-photon absorption. These nanoparticles presented remarkable bioimaging performances and were shown to specifically localize in LDs or lysosomes, respectively, depending on the number of triarylamine units attached. They have been successfully used to detect endogenous LD overproduction, and monitor abnormal activities of LDs/lysosomes, as well as real-time track the lipophagy process in cells. Their far NIR emission and two-photon excitation further supported their promising bioimaging application for lipid droplet tracking in liver tissue and live zebrafish larvae. Our work here enriches BODIPY based NIR AIE dyes and provides organelle specific bio-probes which are superior to currently used commercial ones.

Molecular design and application of luminescent materials composed of group 13 elements with an aggregation-induced emission property

Complexation of π-conjugated ligands by metal or semimetal ions leads to the enhancement of the planarity and rigidity of π-conjugated systems. Boron, especially, has played a central role in the design of luminescent main-group complexes. However, these complexes still suffer the disadvantage of aggregation-caused quenching as well as typical organic fluorophores. It has recently been reported that some types of boron complexes exhibit the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property. Moreover, AIE behavior from complexes and organometallic compounds composed of the other group 13 elements, such as aluminum and gallium, has emerged in this decade. These observations greatly encourage us to develop advanced functional materials based on the group 13 elements. Indeed, recent research has demonstrated that these classes of materials are potentially versatile scaffolds for constructing chromic luminophores, efficiently emissive π-conjugated polymers and so on. This review mainly describes AIE-active group 13 complexes with four-coordinate structures and their application as photo-functional materials. Proposed mechanisms of the origins of AIE behavior are briefly discussed.

AIE-Active Difluoroboron Complexes with N,O-Bidentate Ligands: Rapid Construction by Copper-Catalyzed C-H Activation

The development of organic materials with high solid-state luminescence efficiency is highly desirable because of their fundamental importance and applicability in optoelectronics. Herein, a rapid construction of novel BF2 complexes with N,O-bidentate ligands by using Cu(BF4 )2 •6H2 O as a catalyst and BF2 source is disclosed, which avoids the need for pre-composing the N,O-bidentate ligands and features a broad substrate scope and a high tolerance level for sensitive functional groups. Moreover, molecular oxygen is employed as the terminal oxidant in this transformation. A library of 36 compounds as a new class of BF2 complexes with remarkable photophysical properties is delivered in good to excellent yields, showing a substituent-dependency on the photophysical properties, derived from the π-π* character of the photoexcited state. In addition, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is observed and quantified for the brightest exemplars. The excited state properties are fully investigated in solids and in THF/H2 O mixtures. Hence, a new series of photofunctional materials with variable photophysical properties is reported, with potential applications for sensing, bioimaging, and optoelectronics.

Paintable Hybrids with Thermally Stable Dual Emission Composed of Tetraphenylethene-Integrated POSS and MEH-PPV for Heat-Resistant White-Light Luminophores

Thermally stable dual emission followed by white-light luminescence from hybrid materials is reported. Hybrid films were prepared with a spin-coating method with the mixture solution containing tetraphenylethene (TPE)-integrated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV). TPE-tethered POSS (TPE-POSS) showed high compatibility with MEH-PPV. Therefore, homogeneous films with variable concentrations of TPE-POSS were obtained. Owing to good dispersion of rigid silica cubes into matrices, POSS-containing films demonstrated high thermal stability toward molecular rearrangement by annealing as well as pyrolysis, similar to conventional polymer hybrids. Furthermore, it was found that TPE-POSS was able to enhance emission efficiencies, probably by suppressing chain aggregation. By modulating introduction ratios of TPE-POSS, dual-emission properties followed by white-light luminescence composed of cyan and orange emissions from TPE-POSS and MEH-PPV, respectively, were accomplished. It should be noted that these color balances can be preserved even in the high-temperature region (425 K). Finally, white-light luminescent materials with thermal durability were obtained.

Recent Progress of BODIPY Dyes With Aggregation-Induced Emission

With the development of organic optoelectronic materials and bioimaging technology, to exploit organic luminescent materials with high luminescent efficiency in aggregation-state has become a research hotspot. BODIPYs have become one of the research objects of this kind of material because of their obvious advantages. This review focuses on the design and synthesis of AIE-type BODIPYs, the mechanism of AIE properties and their applications in recent years. Through classification, analysis, and summary, this review aims to explore the structure-activity relationship of AIE-type BODIPYs and to provide ideas for the further design and potential applications of AIE-active fluorescent materials.

BODIPY–ortho-carborane–tetraphenylethylene triad: synthesis, characterization, and properties

Two new compounds, BODIPY–tetraphenylethylene dyad and BODIPY–o-carborane–tetraphenylethylene triad, were designed and synthesized.

Time dependent aggregation induced emission enhancement and the study of molecular packing in closely related azo-phenol BODIPY species

Fluorescent azo-phenol BODIPYs (1-3) have been obtained by the substituent (-OCH₃/-CH₃) directed synthesis of ortho (L1) and para (L2-L3) azo-phenol aldehydes. These display aggregation caused quenching (ACQ, 1) and aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE, 2 and 3) depending on the position of azo relative to the phenolic hydroxyl group. An intriguing time dependent morphological transition from nanospheres to ordered nanorods and subsequent emission changes in AIEE active azo-phenol BODIPYs have been successfully realized by time dependent fluorescence, scanning electron (SEM), transmission electron (TEM) and fluorescence optical microscopy (FOM) studies. The existence of one-dimensional (1D) nanorods as ultimate species in these compounds (2-3) has been supported by crystal packing patterns. Diverse aggregated forms and hierarchical nanostructures have been related to variable extents of fluorescence enhancement. The plausible charge transfer process and its role in AIEE have been supported by DFT studies.

A facile synthesis of novel near-infrared pyrrolopyrrole aza-BODIPY luminogens with aggregation-enhanced emission characteristics

Here we report the facile synthesis of two triphenylethylene-modified pyrrolopyrrole aza-BODIPY dyes with an aggregation-enhanced emission feature. NIR-emitting nanoparticles with remarkable photostability properties and applications in bioimaging were generated due to their good dispersity in water and biocompatibility.

Tetraphenylethene modified β-ketoiminate boron complexes bearing aggregation-induced emission and mechanofluorochromism

Two new thiazole-based β-ketoiminate boron complexes, namelyTTPE-HandTTPE-CN, were designed and successfully synthesized. The two compounds exhibited strong aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and evident mechanofluorochromic (MFC) properties.

Push–pull type meso-ester substituted BODIPY near-infrared dyes as contrast agents for photoacoustic imaging

Push–pull meso-ester BODIPYs with intense NIR absorption and good photo-stability were used for in vitro and in vivo photoacoustic imaging.

Tailoring the Solid-State Fluorescence Emission of BODIPY Dyes by meso Substitution

4,4-Difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) derivatives bearing varied substituents at the meso position (i.e., CF3 , CH3 , COOR, CHO, CN, Cl, iPr) were synthesized to elucidate the structure-property relationships that give rise to emissive J-aggregates. Several new BODIPY derivatives can be added to the previously reported 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-trifluoromethyl derivative to the list of those forming J-aggregates, in addition to other dyes that are emissive in the solid state without forming J-aggregates.
