Kinetic Analysis of the Photochemical Paths in Asymmetric Diarylethene Dimer

An asymmetric diarylethene dimer composed of 2- and 3-thienylethene units linked by m-phenylene developed various colors upon UV irradiation via an independent photochromic reaction on each unit. The change in contents and the other photoresponses of the photogenerated four isomers were analyzed using quantum yield for all the possible photochemical paths, i. e., photoisomerization, fluorescence, energy transfer, and the other non-radiative paths. Almost all the rate constants of photochemical paths were calculated using measurable quantum yields and lifetimes. It was found that a significant contribution on photoresponse was the competition between photoisomerization and intramolecular energy transfer. The clear difference was observed in the photoresponses of the dimer and the 1 : 1 mixture solution of the model compounds. The m-phenylene spacer appropriately regulated the rate of energy transfer in the asymmetric dimer, and the spacer enabled isolation of the excited state of the dimer, making the above quantitative analysis possible.

Delocalized Excitation or Intramolecular Energy Transfer in Pyrene Core Dendrimers

Light-harvesting and then intramolecular energy transfer are the crucial steps in natural photosynthesis. Dendrimers are one of the most promising artificial light-harvesting antennas. Insight into the relationship between molecular structure and energy transfer (or delocalized excitation) in dendrimers would help in understanding and mimicking photosynthesis. Here, a series of dendrimers T1-T4 based on pyrene as a core and fluorene/carbazole as the dendrons have been studied with time-resolved fluorescence and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopies, revealing that the large planar structure of T1 and T2 has led to strong coupling of pyrene and fluorene units, enabling delocalized excitation over the entire molecules. But for T3 and T4, the carbazole units linking the first- and second-generation branches have broken the planar structure and suppressed the π-electron delocalization, enabling the Förster resonance energy transfer. The efficient intramolecular energy transfer from peripheral branches to the core occurs within 2 ps.

Excitation/detection energy controlled anisotropy dynamics in asymmetrically cyano substituted tri-podal molecules

In the present work, the photophysical properties of two series of asymmetrical tri-podal molecules are studied, in order to determine the dependence of energy localization/delocalization phenomena on excitation and detection wavelength, by means of steady state, femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence and anisotropy spectroscopy. The molecules bear triphenylamine as an electron donating core and an acetylenic or olefinic π-conjugated bridge. At the periphery, they are substituted by no, one, two or three -CN groups used as electron acceptors. Thus, the compounds with only one or two -CN groups are asymmetrically substituted. As a comparison, the photophysics of their dipolar and quadrupolar analogues is also presented. The steady state absorption spectra of the asymmetrical tri-podal compounds exhibit a broadening and a low energy shoulder due to the splitting of the excited states. The fluorescence spectra are more red-shifted in the tri-podal molecules with a single -CN group, providing the first evidence of its mostly dipolar nature. Time-resolved anisotropy measurements by using different excitation and detection wavelengths provide clear evidence that the asymmetrical tri-podal molecules with one or two -CN groups behave like octupolar molecules upon high-energy excitation (the initial anisotropy is found 0.1-0.15), while upon low-energy excitation they reveal a behavior expected for linear dipolar or V-shaped quadrupolar molecules (the initial anisotropy is very close to 0.4 and 0.17, respectively). The symmetrical tri-podal compounds with no or three cyano groups, exhibit an anisotropy depolarization time of 2.5 ps attributed to energy hopping. The amplitude of this energy hopping component is wavelength dependent and increases as the excitation is shifted towards the long wavelength edge.

Intramolecular charge transfer and solvation dynamics of push-pull dyes with different π-conjugated linkers

The solvation-dependent excited state dynamics of two push-pull fluorophores with donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) structures were investigated using steady-state and ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy, backed by theoretical calculations. Identical D and A groups were present in both dyes, which differed only in the structure of their central π-conjugated linkers. Dye 1 features a p-phenylenediethynyl linker, while dye 2 contains a 2,5-diethynylthiophene linker. From the steady-state spectra, no appreciable shifts in absorption bands were observed, whereas large red-shifts in emission were seen with increasing solvent polarity, which indicated that the excited states were more polar than the ground state. Theoretical calculations support charge transfer from the triphenylamine (TPA) donor to the pentafluorosulfanyl (SF₅) acceptor viaπ-conjugated linkers to form an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state. TA spectra revealed that a solvation-stabilized conformationally relaxed intramolecular charge transfer (ICT') state was formed in polar solvents, but only an ICT state was observed in nonpolar solvent. The SE band was quenched within 1 ps in high-polarity solvent, which corresponds to the low fluorescence quantum yield. It can be concluded that the dye with the p-phenylenediethynyl π-linker (i.e., dye 1) exhibits a larger degree of ICT than the thiophene analogue (i.e., dye 2). These findings demonstrate how solvation can fine-tune the photophysical properties of push-pull dyes, and this study highlights the importance of π-conjugated linkers in the excited state ICT process.
