Five Rare μ4-O-Centered Ln6Clusters with Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior for Dy6

Synthesis, structures and magnetic studies of hexanuclear lanthanide complexes: SMM behavior of the DyIII analogue and MCE properties of the GdIII analogue

The synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of homometallic hexanuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln6(HL)4(tfa)4(S)2]·2NO3·x H2O·yMeOH (1, Ln = Gd, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 0; 2, Ln = Tb, S = H2O, x = 2, y = 2; 3, Ln = Dy, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 2; 4, Ln = Er, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 2). [(H4L) = 6-((bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)picolinohydrazide) (tfa = trifloroacetylacetone)] are reported. These hexanuclear assemblies are made up of two trinuclear triangular sub-units linked through the oxygen atoms of two phenoxide bridging groups in a corner sharing arrangement. Magnetic studies reveal that 1 displays a magnetocaloric effect with a maximum value of -ΔSm = 21.03 J kg-1 K-1 at T = 3 K and under an applied field change ΔB = 5 T. Complex 3 shows slow relaxation of magnetization even under zero applied field although a clear maximum in the ac susceptibility plots cannot be seen. However, under an optimal applied field of 0.2 T, clear maxima are observed in the out-of-phase (χ''M) component of the ac susceptibility in the temperature range 3.5 K (2 kHz) to 10.5 K (10 kHz). The temperature dependence of the relaxation times could be fitted to the sum of Orbach, Raman and QTM relaxation processes affording the following parameters: τo = 3.4(9) × 10-8 s, Ueff = 94(2) K, BRaman = 16.43(1) K-n s-1, n = 3.2(3) and τQTM = 0.0044(3) s. 4, under an applied magnetic field of 0.2 T, shows slow relaxation of magnetization through a thermally activated Orbach process with Ueff = 18.2(9) K and τo = 3.5(3) × 10-8 s.

Synthesis, characterization, magnetism and theoretical analysis of hetero-metallic [Ni2Ln2] partial di-cubane assemblies

A family of four isostructural [Ln₂Ni₂(L)₂(μ₃-OCH₃)₂(μ_1,3-PhCO₂)₂(PhCO₂)₂(CH₃OH)₄]·2CH₃OH [where Ln = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3) and Ho (4)] complexes has been synthesized using Schiff base ligand 2-[{(2-hydroxybenzyl)imino}methyl]-6-methoxyphenol (H₂L). All the complexes possess a partial di-cubane core structure where the growth of the core is contingent upon the ligand anions and solvent generated μ₃-OCH₃ groups. DC magnetic analysis revealed dominating ferromagnetic interactions between the metal ions, however, we find no slow relaxation characteristics in the AC susceptibility. Further insight into the magnetic behavior of the reported complexes was achieved using DFT and CASSCF theoretical calculations, leading to the comprehension of the fast relaxation characteristics observed by magnetometry.

A series of Ln4III clusters: Dy4 single molecule magnet and Tb4 multi-responsive luminescent sensor for Fe3+, CrO42−/Cr2O72− and 4-nitroaniline

Five tetranuclear lanthanide clusters were synthesized. Dy₄ complex exhibits single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior and Tb₄ compound shows sensing properties towards Fe³⁺, CrO₄²⁻, Cr₂O₇²⁻ and 4-nitroaniline (4-NA).

Two Series of Homodinuclear Lanthanide Complexes: Greatly Enhancing Energy Barriers through Tuning Terminal Solvent Ligands in Dy2 Single-Molecule Magnets

The utilization of 2-ethoxy-6-{[(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)imino]methyl}phenol (H₂ L) as a chelating ligand, in combination with the employment of alcohols (EtOH and MeOH) as auxiliary ligands, in 4 f-metal chemistry afforded two series of dinuclear lanthanide complexes of compositions [Ln₂ L₂ (NO₃ )₂ (EtOH)₂ ] (Ln=Sm (1), Eu (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), Dy (5), Ho (6), Er (7)) and [Ln₂ L₂ (NO₃ )₂ (MeOH)₂ ] (Ln=Sm (8), Eu (9), Gd (10), Tb (11), Dy (12), Ho (13), Er (14)). The structures of 1-14 were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Complexes 1-7 are isomorphous. The two lanthanide(III) ions in 1-7 are doubly bridged by two deprotonated aminophenoxide oxygen atoms of two μ₂ :η⁰ :η¹ :η² :η¹ :η¹ :η⁰ -L^2- ligands. One nitrogen atom, two oxygen atoms of the NO₃^- anion, two methoxide oxygen atoms of two ligand sets, and one oxygen atom of the terminally coordinated EtOH molecule complete the distorted dodecahedron geometry of each lanthanide(III) ion. Compounds 8-14 are isomorphous and their structures are similar to those of 1-7. The slight difference between 1-7 and 8-14 stems from purposefully replacing the EtOH ligands in 1-7 with MeOH in 8-14. Direct-current magnetic susceptibility studies in the 2-300 K range reveal weak antiferromagnetic interactions for 3, 4, 7, 10, 11, and 14, and ferromagnetic interactions at low temperature for 5, 6, 12, and 13. Complexes 5 and 12 exhibit single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with energy barriers of 131.3 K for 5 and 198.8 K for 12. The energy barrier is significantly enhanced by dexterously regulating the terminal ligands. To rationalize the observed difference in the magnetic behavior, complete-active-space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations were performed on two Dy₂ complexes. Subtle variation in the angle between the magnetic axes and the vector connecting two dysprosium(III) ions results in a weaker influence on the tunneling gap of individual dysprosium(III) ions by the dipolar field in 12. This work proposes an efficient strategy for synthesizing Dy₂ SMMs with high energy barriers.
