Syntheses of Thiophene-Thiophene-Linked Corrorin Dimers with Tunable Near-Infrared Absorption and Distinctive Reactivity

Thiahexaphyrinone 1 and thia-dipyrrin-appended corrorin 2 have been synthesized. Surprisingly, further oxidation of compound 2 with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) in dichloromethane afforded dimer 3 with two molecules of compound 2 linked at the α-carbon atoms of the thienyl units. Treatment of compound 3 with DDQ in MeOH and SnCl2 in tetrahydrofuran/H2O afforded the dimethoxy-attached dimer 4 and hydrogenated dihydroxy-attached dimer 5, respectively. These results provide the first examples for synthesizing thiophene-linked porphyrinoid dimers with tunable near-infrared absorption and chirality.

Pyrrolylmethylene Appended Corrorin: Peripheral Coordination and Transformation to Pyridyl Incorporated Hemiporphycene Analogue

A pyrrolylmethylene appended corrorin 1 was synthesized and coordinated with [Rh(CO)₂Cl]₂ to afford 1-Rh with unique Rh^I-η²-CC bonding in addition to the coordination of the dipyrrin-like unit and a carbonyl ligand. Further oxidation of 1 afforded 2, exhibiting a hydrocorrorinone core, and it can be further transformed into pyrrolo[3,2-c]pyridine incorporated hemiporphycene analogue 3 upon treatment with HOAc. The side chain modifies the reactivity of corrorin and effectively tunes the NIR absorption of the resulting porphyrinoids.

Creation from Confusion and Fusion in the Porphyrin World─The Last Three Decades of N-Confused Porphyrinoid Chemistry

Confusion is a novel concept of isomerism in porphyrin chemistry, delivering a steady stream of new chemistry since the discovery of N-confused porphyrin, a porphyrin mutant, in 1994. These days, the number of confused porphyrinoids is increasing, and confusion and associated fusion are found in various fields such as supramolecular chemistry, materials chemistry, biological chemistry, and catalysts. In this review, the birth and growth of confused porphyrinoids in the last three decades are described.

Kinetic trapping of a cobalt(ii) metallocage using a carbazole-containing expanded carbaporphyrinoid ligand

The meso-unsubstituted expanded porphyrinoid 3, incorporating two carbazole moieties, acts as an effective ligand for Co(ii) and permits the isolation and X-ray diffraction-based characterization of a 6 : 3 metal-to-ligand metallocage complex that converts spontaneously to the constituent 2 : 1 metal-to-ligand metalloring species in chloroform solution. The discrete metalloring is formed directly when the Co(ii) complex is crystallized from supersaturated solutions, whereas crystallization from more dilute solutions favors the metallocage. Studies with two other test cations, Pd(ii) and Zn(ii), revealed exclusive formation of the monomeric metalloring complexes with no evidence of higher order species being formed. Structural, electrochemical and UV-vis-NIR absorption spectral studies provide support for the conclusion that the Pd(ii) complex is less distorted and more effectively conjugated than its Co(ii) and Zn(ii) congeners, an inference further supported by TD-DFT calculations. The findings reported here underscore how expanded porphyrins can support coordination modes, including bimetallic complexes and self-assembled cage structures, that are not necessarily easy to access using more traditional ligand systems.

Carbazole containing expanded carbaporphyrinoid ligand supports the formation of 2 : 1 metal-to-ligand complexes with Pd, Co, and Zn. Solid-state studies also revealed formation of a 6 : 3 metal-to-ligand metallocage in the case of Co complexation.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and bonding analysis of two-coordinate copper(I) and silver(I) complexes of pyrrole-based bis(phosphinimine): new metal-pyrrole ring π-interactions

The reaction between 2,5-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyrrole and Me3SiN3 gave the new pyrrole-based bis(phosphinimine) L1H in an excellent yield. L1H reacts with [CuCl(COD)]2, AgBF4, or AgOTf to give the corresponding two-coordinate mononuclear ionic complex formulated as [M{(L1H)-κ2N,N}]+[X]- where M = Cu and Ag; X = [CuCl2], BF4 or OTf. Their single crystal X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the two-coordinate geometry formed by the chelate bonding mode of L1H. These 10-membered metalacycles exhibit planar chirality and were also characterized by spectroscopic methods. In addition, in all three structures, there exists a hitherto unknown π-interaction between the pyrrole ring atoms and metal, represented as η2-(Cα-N) in the copper(i) complex, and η3-(Cα-N-Cα') in the silver(i) complexes. These weak interactions were supported by DFT calculations in terms of their electron densities, non-covalent interaction plots and the decrease in the aromaticity of the pyrrole ring.

Metal complexes of 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)-20-pyrrolyl N-confused porphyrin and its meso-pyrrolyl-bridged dimers: Synthesis and optical properties

Inner- and peripheral-metal complexation behaviors of 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)-20-pyrrolyl N-confused porphyrin (5) and its meso-pyrrolyl-bridged dimers (6-Ni and 7-Ni) were studied in this work. The resulting inner-Ag and peripheral-BF2 complex (5-AgBF[Formula: see text] exhibited the bathochromically shifted absorption feature ([Formula: see text]772 nm), which was attributed to the BF2 complexation. Furthermore, the bis-Ag/Ni complexes of dimer (6-Ag[Formula: see text]Ni and 7-Ag[Formula: see text]Ni) revealed remarkably lower energy bands in the deeper near-infrared ([Formula: see text] NIR-II) region ([Formula: see text] = 1226 and 1042 nm, respectively) through strong interchromophore interactions.

First imidazole-fused carbaporphyrinoid and its conversion to a N-heterocyclic carbene precursor

A series of novel imidazole-fused carbaporphyrinoids were obtained by a surprisingly simple approach by exploiting the reaction of tosylmethylisocyanide (TOSMIC) with readily obtainable 2-aza-21-carbaporphyrins. A facile methylation of silver(iii) complexes of these fused systems leads to cationic N-heterocyclic carbene precursors.

Antiaromatic norcorrolatonickel(ii) reacts regioselectively under basic conditions with active methylene compounds, yielding mono-substituted derivatives in which spectroscopic and redox properties of the starting macrocycle are retained.

Solvent and anion effects on the organization of a luminescent [2 + 2] BODIPY/Ag(i) metallamacrocycle in the crystalline state

The assembly of a novel BODIPY bearing peripheral vinyl–benzonitrile groups with AgX salts (X⁻ = AsF₆⁻, BF₄⁻, ClO₄⁻) leads to the recurrent formation of a [2 + 2] [Ag₂(BODIPY)₂]²⁺ type metallamacrocycle featuring emission in the crystalline state.
