Abstract
We herein successfully demonstrate the use of chiral isochalcogenoureas as Lewis Base catalysts for a variety of (4+2)-cycloaddition reactions of allenoates and different Michael acceptors. In all cases the same structural key-motive, a dihydropyran with a (Z)-configurated exocyclic double bond could be accessed as the major regio- and diastereoisomer in an enantioselective manner. Furthermore, these chiral dihydropyrans were successfully engaged in different follow-up transformations.

Abstract
The first total synthesis of the purported structure of branched resin glycosides merremoside G and H2 is accomplished. A signature step is represented by the sequential transition-metal-catalyzed coupling of stable trisaccharide homoallylic alcohol and monosaccharide alkoxyallene to afford the pentasaccharide skeleton. This de novo strategy is conducted under mild conditions with no need of preactivation. In addition, it allows for efficient preparation of the target compounds in combination with late-stage functionalization.

Abstract
The ezomycins make up a class of complex nucleoside antibiotics that share a common disaccharide core. Herein we present an efficient synthesis of this core from diacetone-d-allose, using a ruthenium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic etherification and a de novo carbohydrate synthesis based on the diastereoselective Henry reaction. Our strategy overcomes several challenges, such as introducing a dense array of functional groups and creating consecutive stereocenters with high selectivity. This approach enables the rapid preparation of disaccharides and paves the way for the total synthesis of ezomycins.

Abstract
A de novo synthesis of the tetrasaccharide fragment of tetrocarcin A is described. The key feature of this approach is highlighted by the regio- and diastereoselective Pd-catalyzed hydroalkoxylation of ene-alkoxyallenes with an unprotected l-digitoxose glycoside. The subsequent reaction with digitoxal in combination with chemoselective hydrogenation generated the target molecule.

Abstract
The development and application of the asymmetric synthesis of oligosaccharides from achiral starting materials is reviewed. This de novo asymmetric approach centers around the use of asymmetric catalysis for the synthesis of optically pure furan alcohols in conjunction with Achmatowicz oxidative rearrangement for the synthesis of various pyranones. In addition, the use of a diastereoselective palladium-catalyzed glycosylation and subsequent diastereoselective post-glycosylation transformation was used for the synthesis of oligosaccharides. The application of this approach to oligosaccharide synthesis is discussed.

Abstract
Human glycans are primarily composed of nine common sugar building blocks. On the other hand, several hundred monosaccharides have been discovered in bacteria and most of them are not readily available. The ability to access these rare sugars and the corresponding glycoconjugates can facilitate the studies of various fundamentally important biological processes in bacteria, including interactions between microbiota and the human host. Many rare sugars also exist in a variety of natural products and pharmaceutical reagents with significant biological activities. Although several methods have been developed for the synthesis of rare monosaccharides, most of them involve lengthy steps. Herein, we report an efficient and general strategy that can provide access to rare sugars from commercially available common monosaccharides via a one-step Ru(II)-catalyzed and boron-mediated selective epimerization of 1,2-trans-diols to 1,2-cis-diols. The formation of boronate esters drives the equilibrium toward 1,2-cis-diol products, which can be immediately used for further selective functionalization and glycosylation. The utility of this strategy was demonstrated by the efficient construction of glycoside skeletons in natural products or bioactive compounds.

A new synthetic approach toward oligosaccharides consisting only of 2,3,6-trideoxypyranoglycosides is reported. Abstract
l-Sorbose is an important rare sugar that exists in some natural products and widely used in pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Herein, two simple and practical routes were developed using cheap magnesium (II) for the synthesis of 1,3,4,5-tetra-O-benzyl-l-sorbopyranose from 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-benzyl-d-glucopyranose with high stereoselectivity and yield. The first route involved the intramolecular hydride shift from C5 to the C1 of the glucopyranose precursor. Wittig reagent (PPh3CHCOOBn) was used to combined with Mg(II) to promote this isomerization reaction from d-glucopyranose to l-sorbopyranose in the alternative route.

Abstract
C-Glycosides are both a common motif in many bioactive natural products and important glycoside mimetics. We demonstrate that activating a hemiacetal with a sulfonyl chloride, followed by treating the resultant glycosyl sulfonate with an enolate results in the stereospecific construction of β-linked C-glycosides. This reaction tolerates a range of acceptors and donors, including disaccharides. The resulting products can be readily derivatized into C-glycoside analogues of β-glycoconjugates, including C-disaccharide mimetics.

B(C6F5)3 enables the metal-free
unprecedented substrate-controlled direct α-stereoselective
synthesis of deoxyglycosides from glycals. 2,3-Unsaturated α-O-glycoside products are obtained with deactivated glycals
at 75 °C in the presence of the catalyst, while 2-deoxyglycosides
are formed using activated glycals that bear no leaving group at C-3
at lower temperatures. The reaction proceeds in good to excellent
yields via concomitant borane activation of glycal donor and nucleophile
acceptor. The method is exemplified with the synthesis of a series
of rare and biologically relevant glycoside analogues.

Abstract
The repertoire of synthetic transformations of the products of the Achmatowicz rearrangement has been expanded by exploring their reactivity with potassium organotrifluoroborates in the absence of transition metals. Depending on the reaction conditions and the substitution pattern of the starting material, the reaction may lead to the stereoselective synthesis of dihydropyranones (2,6- trans), tetrahydropyranones (2,3- cis-2,6- cis) or functionalized 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds. The method has also been adapted for the one-pot synthesis of functionalized pyrroles.

Formose Reaction Controlled by a Copolymer of N,N-Dimethylacrylamide and 4-Vinylphenylboronic Acid. Polymers (Basel) 2017; 9:polym9110549. Abstract
The formose reaction is an oligomerization of formaldehyde under basic conditions, which produces a complicated mixture of monosaccharides and sugar alcohols. Selective formation of useful monosaccharides by the formose reaction has been an important challenge. In this study, we have investigated the formose reaction controlled by N,N-dimethylacrylamide/4-vinylphenylboronic acid copolymer (pDMA/VBA) and phenylboronic acid (PBA) because boronic acid compounds form esters with polyols, e.g., monosaccharides and sugar alcohols. We obtained time⁻conversion data in the presence of these boronic acid compounds, and characterized the products by liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy and NMR measurements. pDMA/VBA and PBA decelerated the formose reaction because of the formation of boronic acid esters with products. It is noteworthy that the formose reaction in the presence of pDMA/VBA and PBA formed favorably six- and seven-carbon branched monosaccharides and sugar alcohols.
