Cobalt-Catalyzed Cross-Dehydrogenative C(sp2 )-C(sp3 ) Coupling of Oxazole/Thiazole with Ether or Cycloalkane

Non-noble metal-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenation coupling (CDC) involving ether α-C(sp3)-H to construct C-C bonds

Ether derivatives are widespread as essential building blocks in various drugs, natural products, agrochemicals, and materials. Modern economy requires developing green strategies with improved efficiency and reduction of waste. Due to its atom and step-economy, the cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reaction has become a major strategy for ether functionalization. This review covers C-H/C-H cross-coupling reactions of ether derivatives with various C-H bond substrates via non-noble metal catalysts (Fe, Cu, Co, Mn, Ni, Zn, Y, Sc, In, Ag). We discuss advances achieved in these CDC reactions and hope to attract interest in developing novel methodologies in this field of organic chemistry.

Remote carbamate-directed site-selective benzylic C–H oxygenation via synergistic copper/TEMPO catalysis at room temperature

A benzylic C(sp3)–H oxygenation with water at room temperature through a ligand- and additive-free synergistic copper/TEMPO-catalysed radical relay pathway and a remote directing strategy is described.

Direct radical functionalization methods to access substituted adamantanes and diamondoids

Adamantane derivatives have diverse applications in the fields of medicinal chemistry, catalyst development and nanomaterials, owing to their unique structural, biological and stimulus-responsive properties, among others. The synthesis of substituted adamantanes and substituted higher diamondoids is frequently achieved via carbocation or radical intermediates that have unique stability and reactivity when compared to simple hydrocarbon derivatives. In this review, we discuss the wide range of radical-based functionalization reactions that directly convert diamondoid C-H bonds to C-C bonds, providing a variety of products incorporating diverse functional groups (alkenes, alkynes, arenes, carbonyl groups, etc.). Recent advances in the area of selective C-H functionalization are highlighted with an emphasis on the H-atom abstracting species and their ability to activate the particularly strong C-H bonds that are characteristic of these caged hydrocarbons, providing insights that can be applied to the C-H functionalization of other substrate classes.

Synergetic copper/TEMPO-catalysed benzylic C–H imidation with N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide at room temperature and tandem conversions with alcohols or arenes

A remote carbamate-directed benzylic C–H imidation with NFSI at room temperature through synergetic CuCl-TEMPO catalysis and tandem alkoxylation or arylation with alcohols or arenes are described.

Palladium-Catalyzed Q-Tube-Assisted Protocol for Synthesizing Diaza-dibenzo[a,e]azulene and Diaza-benzo[a]fluorene Derivatives via O2 Acid-Promoted Cross-Dehydrogenative Coupling

An appropriate and efficient Q-tube-assisted palladium-catalyzed strategy for the synthesis of novel, unparalleled diaza-dibenzo[a,e]azulene and diaza-benzo[a]fluorene derivatives has been sophisticated, which includes oxygen and AcOH-induced oxidative C(sp³)-C(sp²) cross-dehydrogenative coupling reactions of 1-amino-2-imino-4-arylpyridine-3-carbonitriles with benzocyclic ketones such as benzosuberone, tetralone, thiochromone, and chromone, respectively. This Q-tube gas purging kit assisted-protocol features safe due to easy pressing and sealing, a wide substrate scope, easy workup and purifying phases, and the use of O₂ as a benign oxidant, in addition to being scalable and having a high atom economy. The suggested mechanistic pathway includes a formal dehydrative step followed by palladium AcOH-induced CH(sp³)-CH(sp²) oxidative cross-coupling. In this study, X-ray crystallographic analysis has been used to authenticate the targeted products.

Synthetic Strategy for Pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridine and Pyrido[1,2-b]indazole Derivatives through AcOH and O2-Promoted Cross-dehydrogenative Coupling Reactions between 1,3-Dicarbonyl Compounds and N-Amino-2-iminopyridines

An efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of uniquely substituted pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridine and pyrido[1,2-b]indazole derivatives, which involves acetic acid and molecular oxygen promoted cross-dehydrogenative coupling reactions of respective β-ketoesters and β-diketones (like ethyl acetoacetate, ethyl benzoylacetate, methyl propionylacetate, acetylacetone, dimedone, 1,3-cyclohexanedione, and 1,3-cyclopentanedione) with N-amino-2-iminopyridines. The proposed tentative mechanism involves formal acetic acid-promoted oxidative C(sp3)-C(sp2) dehydrogenative coupling followed by dehydrative cyclization under a catalyst-free condition within high atom economy processes.

Sustainable Synthetic Approach for (Pyrazol-4-ylidene)pyridines By Metal Catalyst-Free Aerobic C(sp2)-C(sp3) Coupling Reactions between 1-Amino-2-imino-pyridines and 1-Aryl-5-pyrazolones

A novel, metal catalyst-free, and efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of (pyrazol-4-ylidene)pyridine derivatives. The process involves dehydrogenative coupling of 1-amino-2-imino-pyridines with 1-aryl-5-pyrazolone derivatives utilizing O2 as the sole oxidant. The new method benefits from a high atom economy, efficiency, and substrate scope, as well as the simplicity of reaction and product purification procedures.

Copper-Catalyzed Alkylarylation of Unactivated Alkenes: Synthesis of 3-Alkyl Indolines from N-Allyl Anilines and Alkanes

A rare example of C(sp³ )-H functionalization of simple alkanes with unactivated alkenes is presented. In the presence of a copper salt and di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP), N-allyl anilines underwent exo-selective alkylation/cyclization cascade with unactivated alkenic bonds as radical acceptors and simple alkanes as radical precursors, providing a direct access to 3-alkyl indolines. The present protocol features simple operation, broad substrate scope and great exo selectivity.

Cobalt-catalyzed C2α-acyloxylation of 2-substituted indoles with tert-butyl peresters

An efficient cobalt-catalyzed C2α selective C(sp3)-H acyloxylation of 2-substituted indoles with tert-butyl peresters to synthesize diverse 2α-acyloxylated indole derivatives is described. This newly developed method exhibits mild conditions, low-cost catalyst, and high functional group compatibility. In addition, the effectiveness of this chemistry is illuminated by a late-stage modification of methylated indomethacin.
