Abstract
We report a transition metal-catalyzed ring expansion of azulene that can be contrasted with C-H functionalization. This study represents the first example of the successful ring expansion of azulene using Cu(hfacac)2 (hfacac: hexafluoroacetylacetonate) with a diazo reagent. This result is notable for extending the Buchner reaction, previously limited to benzenoid aromatics, to nonbenzenoid compounds. The chemoselectivity of the reaction can be directed towards C-H functionalization by substituting the Cu catalyst with AgOTf. This approach does not require the addition of phosphine, NHC, or related ligands, and prefunctionalization of azulenes is unnecessary. Furthermore, the method exhibits excellent functional group tolerance, allowing for the synthesis of a wide range of 6,7-bicyclic compounds and C-H functionalized azulenes. We also present a theoretical study that explains the experimental observations, explaining why copper afford the ring expansion product while silver forms the C-H alkylation product.

Abstract
An interesting substrate-controlled one-pot approach to highly substituted 2',5'-dicyclopropoxy-1,1':4',1''-teraryls and 6-hydroxypentafulvenes involving various 1,2-diketones and 2-aroyl-1-chlorocyclopropanecarboxylates as 3C Michael acceptors triggered by Cs2CO3 has been developed. We noticed that 1,2-diketones play a decisive role in this reaction to determine the product's selectivity. For example, aryl rings having electron-poor functionalities at the para and meta-positions of 1,2-diketones led to 2,5-diarylhydroquinones selectively via a cyclodimerization/double oxa-Michael process with highly strained cyclopropenes. However, when 1-naphthyl/electron-donating aryl/ortho-aryl-substituted 1,2-diketones were chosen, the Michael-initiated ring expansion reaction (C-C and CC bonds) took place under the same conditions that gave the corresponding pentafulvenes predominately. Moreover, this reaction has several imperative features such as good to high diastereoselectivities, wide substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, transition metal-free process, etc.

Abstract
Guaiazulene is an alkyl-substituted azulene available from natural sources and is a much lower cost starting material for the synthesis of azulene derivatives than azulene itself. Here we report an approach for the selective functionalisation of guaiazulene which takes advantage of the acidity of the protons on the guaiazulene C4 methyl group. The aldehyde produced by this approach constitutes a building block for the construction of azulenes substituted on the seven-membered ring. Derivatives of this aldehyde synthesised by alkenylation, reduction and condensation are reported, and the halochromic properties of a subset of these derivatives have been studied.

Abstract
The functionalization of azulenes via reaction with cationic η5-iron carbonyl diene complexes under mild reaction conditions is demonstrated. A range of azulenes, including derivatives of naturally occurring guaiazulene, were investigated in reactions with three electrophilic iron complexes of varying electronic properties, affording the desired coupling products in 43-98% yield. The products were examined with UV-vis/fluorescence spectroscopy and showed interesting halochromic properties. Decomplexation and further derivatization of the products provide access to several different classes of 1-substituted azulenes, including a conjugated ketone and a fused tetracycle.

Abstract
Azulene, a unique isomer of naphthalene, has received much interest from researchers in different fields due to its unusual chemical structure with a negatively charged 5-membered ring fused with a positively charged 7-membered ring. In particular, incorporation of azulene into polymers has led to many interesting properties. This minireview covers functionalization methods of azulene at its various positions of 5- and 7-membered rings to form azulene derivatives including azulene monomers, and gives an overview of a wide range of azulene-containing polymers including poly(1,3-azulene), azulene-based copolymers with connectivity at 1,3-positions of the 5-membered ring, or 4,7-positions of the 7-membered ring, as well as copolymers with azulene units as side chains. Their chemical and physical properties together with applications of azulene-containing polymers have also been summarized.

Abstract
A regio- and stereoselective synthesis of unsymmetrically substituted pentafulvenes is reported via the condensation of readily available ynones and amino crotonates under very mild conditions. The mechanism of this 3 + 2 annulation involved a vinylogous Michael addition followed by an intramolecular enamine aldol condensation. Substrates with o-bromo tether further cyclized to pentannulated hydroquinolines through an isomerization/SNAr in the same reaction pot at the elevated temperature.

Abstract
A three-component reaction of an azulene, an aryl glyoxal and a 1,3-dicarbonyl compound has been elaborated to access a series of azulene derivatives. Some of these azulene-containing adducts were further subjected to post-MCR transformations to assemble azulene–heterocycle conjugates. Three-component reaction of azulene, aryl glyoxal and 1,3-dicarbonyl compound and subsequent post-transformations provide access to three distinct types of azulene derivatives.![]()

Abstract
The selective catalytic functionalization of the C-H bond of azulene upon incorporation of carbene or nitrene units with metal-based catalysts is described. Ethyl diazoacetate or ArI═NTs are employed as carbene or nitrene precursors, respectively. The azulene derivatives are subsequently employed as building blocks toward more complex structures with potential use as biodegradable materials.

Abstract
The use of halo-substituted ArSO2R as an aryl source in metal-catalyzed C–C bond formation reactions presents several advantages, as the reaction often proceeds without cleavage of the C–halo bonds.
