Nanoarchitectured Graphene-Organic Frameworks (GOFs): Synthetic Strategies, Properties, and Applications

Surface engineered recombinant Escherichia coli for the potential application of the cobalt contaminated wastewater treatment and the photocatalytic dye degradation

The novel recombinant Escherichia coli strain was construct through cell surface display for the treatment of cobalt contaminated wastewater and dye contaminated wastewater. First, structural analysis of known cobalt binding peptide was conducted and core binding sites were figured out which showing better cobalt binding ability. The cobalt peptides were attached to OmpC to construct cobalt adsorbing recombinant Escherichia coli. The recombinant strain efficiently absorbed and retrieved cobalt from cobalt wastewater by adsorbing 1895 µmol/g DCW of cobalt. Following adsorption, cobalt nanoparticles were synthesized through thermal decomposition of cobalt adsorbed recombinant strain at 500˚C. The nanoparticles exhibited noteworthy photocatalytic properties, demonstrating a substantial capacity for degrading dyes when used as a catalyst at a concentration of 10 mg/dl. These results presenting potential solutions for effective and environmentally friendly approaches to address cobalt and dye contaminated wastewater treatment process.

PEGylated Graphene Oxide as a Nanodrug Delivery Vehicle for Podophyllotoxin (GO/PEG/PTOX) and In Vitro α-Amylase/α-Glucosidase Inhibition Activities

This study aims to develop a nanodrug delivery system containing podophyllotoxin (PTOX), a known anticancer drug, loaded on graphene oxide (GO). The system's ability to inhibit α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes was also investigated. PTOX was isolated from Podophyllum hexandrum roots with a yield of 2.3%. GO, prepared by Hummer's method, was converted into GO-COOH and surface-mobilized using polyethylene glycol (PEG) (1:1) in an aqueous medium to obtain GO-PEG. PTOX was loaded on GO-PEG in a facile manner with a 25% loading ratio. All the samples were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, UV/visible spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In FT-IR spectral data, GO-PEG-PTOX exhibited a reduction in acidic functionalities and there was an appearance of the ester linkage of PTOX with GO. The UV/visible measurements suggested an increase of absorbance in 290-350 nm regions for GO-PEG, suggesting the successful drug loading on its surface (25%). GO-PEG-PTOX exhibited a rough, aggregated, and scattered type of pattern in SEM with distinct edges and binding of PTOX on its surface. GO-PEG-PTOX remained potent in inhibiting both α-amylase and α-glucosidase with IC₅₀ values of 7 and 5 mg/mL, closer to the IC₅₀ of pure PTOX (5 and 4.5 mg/mL), respectively. Owing to the 25% loading ratio and 50% release within 48 h, our results are much more promising. Additionally, the molecular docking studies confirmed four types of interactions between the active centers of enzymes and PTOX, thus supporting the experimental results. In conclusion, the PTOX-loaded GO nanocomposites are promising α-amylase- and α-glucosidase-inhibitory agents when applied in vitro and have been reported for the first time.

Nanoarchitectured Graphene Organic Framework for Drug Delivery and Chemo-photothermal Synergistic Therapy

The combination of phototherapy and chemotherapy has received extensive attention in the field of cancer therapy. Hence, graphene organic framework (GOF) with a large d-spacing was prepared by solvothermal method, and a novel nanocomposite based on bovine serum albumin (BSA) and the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) was developed, which effectively achieved a photothermal-chemotherapy synergistic treatment. When the feeding ratio was 1:1.6, the DOX loading capacity was 18.51%, and the GOF-BSA/DOX nanocomposite possessed unobvious pH response characteristic, as well as the cumulative release of DOX reached 54.17% at 42°C in the acidic environment (pH = 5.0). The nanocarriers also showed excellent photothermal property and photothermal stability in vitro. In addition, under 808 nm near-infrared laser (NIR) irradiation, the GOF-BSA/DOX nanocomposites generated a large amount of heat, which significantly enhanced the synergistic antitumor effect of in vitro photothermal-chemotherapy. Furthermore, the GOF-BSA/DOX nanocomposites exhibited significantly increased cytotoxicity in the NIR compared with chemotherapy or photothermal therapy alone, suggesting that the combination of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy has excellent antitumor capacity. Therefore, porous GOF nanocarriers may have great potential in combined anti-tumour therapy.

Recent advances in the tuning of the organic framework materials - The selections of ligands, reaction conditions, and post-synthesis approaches

Organic framework materials, particularly metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), graphene-organic frameworks (GOFs), and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have led to the revolution across fields including catalysts, sensors, gas capture, and biology mainly owing to their ultra-high surface area-to-volume ratio, on-demand tunable crystal structures, and unique surface properties. While the wet chemistry routes have been the predominant synthesis approach, the crystal phase, morphological parameters, and physicochemical properties of organic framework materials are largely affected by various synthesis parameters and precursors. In this work, we specifically review the influences of synthesis parameters towards crystal structures and chemical compositions of organic framework materials, including selected ligand types and lengths, reaction temperature/solvent/reactant compositions, as well as post-synthesis modification approaches. More importantly, the subsequent impacts on the general electronic, mechanical, surface chemical, and thermal properties as well as the consequent variation in performances towards catalytic, desalination, gas sensing, and gas storage applications are critically discussed. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of organic framework materials are provided.

Novel Z-scheme binary zinc tungsten oxide/nickel ferrite nanohybrids for photocatalytic reduction of chromium (Cr (VI)), photoelectrochemical water splitting and degradation of toxic organic pollutants

A simple hydrothermal approach was demonstrated for synthesizing a coupled NiFe₂O₄-ZnWO₄ nanocomposite, wherein one-dimensional ZnWO₄ nanorods were inserted into two-dimensional NiFe₂O₄ nanoplates. Herein, we evaluated the photocatalytic removal of Cr(VI), and degradation of tetracycline (TC) and methylene blue (MB) by the nanocomposite, as well as its ability to split water. The ZnWO₄ nanorods enriched the synergistic interactions, upgraded the solar light fascination proficiency, and demonstrated outstanding detachment and migration of the photogenerated charges, as confirmed by a transient photocurrent study and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. Compared to pristine NiFe₂O₄ and ZnWO_4, the NiFe₂O₄-ZnWO₄ nanocomposite exhibited a higher Cr(VI) reduction (93.5%) and removal of TC (97.9%) and MB (99.6%). Radical trapping results suggested that hydroxyl and superoxide species are dominant reactive species, thereby facilitating the Z-scheme mechanism. Furthermore, a probable photocatalytic mechanism was projected based on the experimental results. The photoelectrochemical analysis confirmed that NiFe₂O₄-ZnWO₄ exhibited minor charge-transfer resistance and large photocurrents. We propose a novel and efficient approach for designing a coupled heterostructured nanocomposites with a significant solar light ability for ecological conservation and water splitting.

Photoelectrocatalytic reactor improvement towards oil-in-water emulsion degradation

Oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion is critical wastewater that is challenging to eliminate and requires a long treatment process, and it is necessary to develop highly effective removal methods before releasing it into natural water sources. This research has selected the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) technique to solve this problem by developing a PEC reactor for high efficiency in O/W degradation and understanding the essential factors related to the PEC reactor's efficiency improvement. The PEC reactor has been designed on a large scale with suitable positioning of an electrode that is, designing a light source near the anode electrode to enhance light irradiation efficiency and including a circulating pump to provide continuous flow to the solution through the electrode surface. We studied the main factors of supporting the electrolyte, electrode characteristics, and catalytic process. We investigated the O/W-degradation efficiency using a UV/Vis spectrophotometer, chemical oxygen demand (COD) measurement, and GC-MS analysis. We optimized the PEC reactor using the developed BiVO₄ photoanodes and placed them parallel with the zinc plates. Then, we controlled the applied potential at 1.0 V in 0.1 M Na₂SO₄ supporting an electrolyte under visible light irradiation. The developed PEC reactor can be degraded in the O/W emulsion up to 76% and decreased the COD value up to 78% for 7h. This PEC cell can be completely decomposed of many functional groups, such as carbonyl, ester, nitrile, amine, phosphate, chloro group, and nitro group, that were contained in the O/W substance. The highlight of this research is the designed light source and circulating pump inside of the PEC reactor to enhance the light irradiation, refresh the anode electrode, and understand the critical factor for the improvement of O/W-degradation efficiency. This PEC reactor presents a high-efficiency O/W degradation with practical use and a fast process suitable for further application in high turbidity of wastewater treatment from the oil industry.

Porous PtAg nanoshells/reduced graphene oxide based biosensors for low-potential detection of NADH

A superior NADH sensing platform was constructed based on porous PtAg nanoshells supported on reduced graphene oxide (PtAg/rGO) in the absence of any enzymes and redox mediators. The PtAg/rGO composite was prepared via one-step reduction combined with galvanic replacement reaction. The as-made PtAg/rGO assembles multiple structural advantages of coherent conductive matrix, rich electroactive sites, and high specific surface area, accompanied by the unique alloying effect. The PtAg/rGO possesses adequate active reaction sites and fluent electron transport pathway towards the electrocatalytic NADH oxidation, thus presenting significantly increased oxidation current and negative shift of 330 mV in applied potential relative to the bare GCE. By virtues of the outstanding electrocatalytic activity, PtAg/rGO exhibits effective amperometric detection of NADH at 0.15 V within a wide linear concentration range of 2-2378 μM, a high sensitivity of 92.62 μA mM^-1 cm^-2, low detection limit of 0.2 μM, and long-term detection over 2500 s. Moreover, the as-constructed biosensors can achieve accurate NADH detection in human serum samples, indicating its promising application feasibility in fundamental and clinic research. A sensitive and highly stable electrochemical biosensor based on PtAg/rGO is constructed for the quantitative detection of NADH at low applied potential.

Facile synthesis of TiO2/Ag3PO4 composites with co-exposed high-energy facets for efficient photodegradation of rhodamine B solution under visible light irradiation

In this study, TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ composites based on anatase TiO₂ nanocrystals with co-exposed {101}, {010}/{100}, {001} and [111]-facets and Ag₃PO₄ microcrystals with irregular and cubic-like polyhedron morphologies were successfully synthesized by combining hydrothermal and ion-exchange methods. The anatase TiO₂ nanocrystals with different high-energy facets were controllably prepared via hydrothermal treatment of the exfoliated [Ti₄O₉]²⁻/[Ti₂O₅]²⁻ nanosheet solutions at desired pH values. The Ag₃PO₄ microcrystal with different morphologies was prepared via the ion-exchange method in the presence of AgNO₃ and NH₄H₂PO₄ at room temperature, which was used as a substrate to load the as-prepared anatase TiO₂ nanocrystals on its surface and to form TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ heterostructures. The apparent rate constant of the pH 3.5-TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ composite was the highest at 12.0 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹, which was approximately 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 13.3, and 24.0 fold higher than that of pH 0.5-TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ (10.5 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹), pH 7.5-TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ (10.2 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹), pH 11.5-TiO₂ (8.8 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹), Ag₃PO₄ (7.7 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹), blank sample (0.9 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹), and the commercial TiO₂ (0.5 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹), respectively. The pH 3.5-TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ composite exhibited the highest visible-light photocatalytic activity which can be attributed to the synergistic effects of its heterostructure, relatively small crystal size, large specific surface area, good crystallinity, and co-exposed high-energy {001} and [111]-facets. The as-prepared TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ composites still exhibited good photocatalytic activity after three successive experimental runs, indicating that they had remarkable stability. This study provides a new way for the preparation of TiO₂/Ag₃PO₄ composite semiconductor photocatalysts with high energy crystal surfaces and high photocatalytic activity.

Progress in the functional modification of graphene/graphene oxide: a review

Graphene and graphene oxide have attracted tremendous interest over the past decade due to their unique and excellent electronic, optical, mechanical, and chemical properties. This review focuses on the functional modification of graphene and graphene oxide. First, the basic structure, preparation methods and properties of graphene and graphene oxide are briefly described. Subsequently, the methods for the reduction of graphene oxide are introduced. Next, the functionalization of graphene and graphene oxide is mainly divided into covalent binding modification, non-covalent binding modification and elemental doping. Then, the properties and application prospects of the modified products are summarized. Finally, the current challenges and future research directions are presented in terms of surface functional modification for graphene and graphene oxide.

Band gap tuning and surface modification of carbon dots for sustainable environmental remediation and photocatalytic hydrogen production - A review

Energy and water are the two major issues facing the modern mankind. Providing freshwater requires energy and producing energy uses water. In the present-day scenario, both these routes face growing problems and limitations. Energy crisis has risen due to the depletion of fossil fuels that cause pollution to water bodies making the water unusable for human consumption. In this regard, semiconductor nanocrystals with luminescent properties or carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are the newly developed nanomaterials whose distinctive photo-physical characteristics are focusing to a new generation of robust materials and sensors for sustainable development. In this review, advances in surface and band gap modification of CQDs to improve the activity of nanomaterials will be discussed with special reference to some specific CQDs exhibiting special optical properties for water treatment/splitting applications. Recent advances on CQDs nanocomposites including their applications in photodegradation of organic pollutants, sensing of heavy metal ions in water and water splitting are discussed critically to narrate the future prospects in this field. Challenges and limitations for further improvement are covered to provide smart choices for creating sustainability of benign environment and economic benefits.
