Abstract
Direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFCs) have gained immense importance as a source of clean energy for portable electronic devices. It outperforms other fuel cells in several key operational and safety parameters. However, slow kinetics of the formic acid oxidation at the anode remains the main obstacle in achieving a high power output in DFAFCs. Noble metal-based electrocatalysts are effective, but are expensive and prone to CO poisoning. Recently, a substantial volume of research work have been dedicated to develop inexpensive, high activity and long lasting electrocatalysts. Herein, recent advances in the development of anode electrocatalysts for DFAFCs are presented focusing on understanding the relationship between activity and structure. This review covers the literature related to the electrocatalysts based on noble metals, non-noble metals, metal-oxides, synthesis route, support material, and fuel cell performance. The future prospects and bottlenecks in the field are also discussed at the end.

Abstract
Accurate detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) has a pivotal role in the metastasis monitoring and prognosis of tumor. In this work, an ultrasensitive electrochemical cytosensor was developed based on excellent electrocatalytic materials and a dual recognition strategy. Herein, novel branched PtAuRh trimetallic nanospheres (b-PtAuRh TNS) were synthesized for the first time by a facile one-pot method, which had a huge specific surface area and outstanding catalytic activity. B-PtAuRh TNS linked with aptamers targeting mucin1 (MUC1) were served as signal tags to amplify the signal. As electrode modified material, the nanocomposites of Cabot carbon black (BP2000) and AuNPs were used to improve the electron transfer efficiency of electrode. In addition to using b-PtAuRh TNS labeled anti-MUC1 aptamers as signal probes, anti-EpCAM antibodies were worked as capture probes to achieve dual recognition of target cells. In other words, only cells expressing both MUC1 and EpCAM could produce electrochemical signal. The constructed cytosensor presented a wide linear range (5 - 1 × 106 cells mL-1) and a low detection limit (1 cell mL-1). It was worth noting that the proposed cytosensor could detect CTCs in clinical blood samples. To sum up, the developed cytosensor might become a promising detection platform for cancer diagnosis and tumor metastasis.

Abstract
Tuning the compositions and morphologies of catalysts is very important for the design of efficient formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) electrocatalysts. Herein, unique PtPdP dendritic nanoparticles (PtPdP DNs) with uniform size and open-pore structure are fabricated by a facile method, in which the Pd and P elements are simultaneously incorporated into Pt DNs. The prepared PtPdP DNs show enhanced catalytic activity and stability for FAOR. The improved electrocatalytic activity toward FAOR for the PtPdP DNs is mainly attributed to the synergic enhancement effect of the structural and compositional advantages, which jointly promote the electrocatalytic kinetics and thus enhance the electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract
Photocatalytic water splitting for H2 evolution is regarded as the most promising way to overcome the energy and environmental crisis. Pt clusters as a cocatalyst can efficiently enhance the performance of H2 generation in most photocatalysts, but the activity is still unsatisfied. By tuning the electronic structures of materials, one can develop catalysts with enhanced activity. Here we synthesize a Pt-Au alloy with subnano size as cocatalyst on TiO2 nanosheets for photocatalytic H2 generation that shows an outstanding activity with a H2 generation rate of 80.1 μmol h-1 for at least 100 h. The activity is twice than the pure Pt cocatalyst, mainly because the optimized hydrogen adsorption energy on Pt cluster is tuned by Au atoms.

Abstract
Porous multimetallic alloyed nanostructures possess unique physical and chemical properties to generate promising potential in fuel cells. However, the controllable synthesis of this kind of materials still remains challenging. Herein, we report a facile method for the one-pot, high-yield synthesis of trimetallic PtPdRh mesoporous nanospheres (PtPdRh MNs) under mild conditions. The resultant PtPdRh MNs possess the features of uniform shape, a narrow size distribution, plenty of well-defined mesopores, highly open structure, and multicomponent effects, which impart advantages such as large surface area, favorable mass diffusion, high utilization of electrocatalysts, and synergy among the various metal components. Benefitting from the synergetic effects originating from the multimetallic composition and unique mesoporous structure, the as-prepared PtPdRh MNs exhibit remarkably enhanced electrocatalytic performance for methanol oxidation reaction relative to bimetallic PtPd MNs and commercial Pt/C catalyst.
