Dinuclear Lanthanide Complexes Based on a Schiff-base Ligand: Free Lattice Solvent Inducing the Single Molecule Magnet Behavior of Dy2 Compound

[α-AsW9O33]9- bridged hexagonal clusters of Ln(III) showing field induced SMM behavior: experimental and theoretical insight

Polyoxometalates (POM), as inorganic polydentate oxygen donors, provide binding opportunities for oxophilic lanthanide metal centers to construct novel Ln-substituted POM materials with exciting structures and attractive properties. Herein, we have reported four arsenotungstate [α-AsW₉O₃₃]^9- based lanthanide-containing polyoxometalates [Cs_xK_36-x{Ln₆(H₂O)₁₂(α-AsW₉O₃₃)₆}]·yH₂O (Ln = Er (1), Gd (2), Ho (3), and Tb (4)), which are synthesized in an alkaline medium. Complexes 1-3 are the dimeric structures of [Ln₃(H₂O)₆(α-AsW₉O₃₃)₃]^18- polyanions, whereas complex 4 is a hexamer of the polyanion [Tb (H₂O)₂(α-AsW₉O₃₃)]^6- as a building unit. In all the complexes, [α-AsW₉O₃₃]^9- units are staggered up and down and give rise to the chair conformation, where one [α-AsW₉O₃₃]^9- unit bridges two Ln(III) centers through four μ₂-oxygen and two terminal oxygen atoms, resulting in the hexagonal arrangement of lanthanides. The dynamic magnetic measurement indicates that only complex 1 exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization with an applied dc field (1500 Oe). To gain insight into the slow relaxation of magnetization in complex 1, the ligand-field parameters and the splitting of the ground-state multiplet of the Er(III) ions have been estimated. The ab initio calculation results confirm that the ground state wave function of these molecules (1, 3, and 4) is mainly composed of a mixture of m_J states, and the non-axial crystal field (CF) terms are more predominant than the axial CF term. The solid-state fluorescence spectra of 1-4 reveal that the photoexcitation O → M ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) of arsenotungstate fragments is effectively quenched due to the spatial coordination environment around the Ln(III) ion.

A mixed-valence [CoII 4CoIII 2] cluster with defect disk-shaped topology

A mixed-valence Co₆ cluster was synthesized and characterized. It exhibits a defect disk-shaped architecture. DC magnetic property studies in the 2.0–300 K range revealed anti­ferromagnetic inter­actions between the Co^II ions.

The employment of the new Schiff base ligand 2-[(4-chloro-2-hy­droxy­benzyl­idene­amino)­meth­yl]phenol (H₂L) bearing O₂N donors for the preparation of a novel Co₆ cluster is reported. The hexa­nuclear cobalt com­plex, namely, di-μ₂-acetato­tetra­kis­{μ₂-2-[(4-chloro-2-oxido­benzyl­idene­amino)­meth­yl]phenolato}tetra-μ₃-methano­lato-tetra­cobalt(II)dicobalt(III), [Co^II₄Co^III₂(C₁₄H₁₀ClNO₂)₄(CH₃COO)₂(CH₃O)₄], was obtained using Co(CH₃COO)₂·4H₂O and H₂L as starting materials in MeOH under solvothermal conditions. The six metal ions are linked together by the μ₃-O atoms of four deprotonated MeOH mol­ecules, two CH₃COO⁻ units and six phenolate O atoms of four L²⁻ ligands to form a defect disk-shaped topology. DC magnetic susceptibility investigations revealed the existence of anti­ferromagnetic inter­actions in the Co₆ cluster.

Macrocycle supported dinuclear lanthanide complexes with different β-diketonate co-ligands displaying zero field single-molecule magnetic behaviour

Three different sets of isomorphous dinuclear Gd/Dy complexes with an uncommon macrocyclic ligand and β-diketonate co-ligands were reported in which Dy2 analogues are zero field SMMs.

Significantly Enhancing the Single-Molecule-Magnet Performance of a Dinuclear Dy(III) Complex by Utilizing an Asymmetric Auxiliary Organic Ligand

In this work, we employed an asymmetric auxiliary organic ligand (1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone, Htfac) to further regulate the magnetic relaxation behavior of series of Dy₂ single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with a N1,N3-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine (H₂L) ligand. Fortunately, an air-stable Dy₂ complex, [Dy₂(L)₂(tfac)₂] (1; Htfac = 1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone) was obtained at room temperature. A structural analysis indicated that some Dy-O or Dy-N bond lengths for 1 are not in the range of those for the complexes [Dy^III₂(L)₂(acac)₂]·2CH₂Cl₂ (Dy₂-acac; Hacac = acetylacetone) and [Dy^III₂(L)₂(hfac)₂] (Dy₂-hfac; Hhfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone), although the electron-withdrawing ability of tfac^- is stronger than that of acac^- but weaker than that of hfac^-. Additionally, the Dy-O3/O3a (the two O atoms bridged to Dy^III ions) bond lengths are also affected by the asymmetrical Htfc ligand. This indicated that the charge distribution of the coordination atoms around Dy^III has been modified in 1, which leads to the fine-tuning of the magnetic relaxation behavior of 1. Magnetic studies indicated that the values of effective energy barrier (U_eff) for 1 and its diluted sample (2) are 234.8(3) and 188.0(6) K, respectively, which are both higher than the reported value of 110 K for the complex Dy₂-hfac. More interestingly, 1 exhibits a magnetic hysteresis opening when T < 2.5 K at zero field, while the hysteresis loops of 2 are closed at a zero dc field. This discrepancy is due to the weak intramolecular exchange coupling in 2, which cannot overcome the QTM of the single Dy^III ion. Ab initio calculations for 1 revealed that the charge distributions of the coordination atoms around Dy^III ions were regulated and the intramolecular exchange coupling was indeed improved when the asymmetrical Htfc was employed as a ligand for the synthesis of this kind of Dy₂ SMM.

Evolution from a single relaxation process to two-step relaxation processes of Dy2 single-molecule magnets via the modulations of the terminal solvent ligands

To explore the influences of magnetic interactions on the relaxation dynamics of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and to understand the relationship between single-ion relaxation and the relaxation of a molecular entity, it is very important to design dinuclear lanthanide-based SMMs with two-step relaxation processes. Here, three Dy₂ complexes of compositions [Dy₂(L)₂(NO₃)₂(MeOH)₂] (1), [Dy₂(L)₂(NO₃)₂(EtOH)₂] (2), and [Dy₂(L)₂(NO₃)₂(DMF)₂]·0.5EtOH (3) (H₂L = 2-(((2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)imino)methyl)-4-methoxyphenol) were successfully synthesized via elaborately introducing different terminal solvent ligands. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analyses revealed that complexes 1-3 are isostructural. The two Dy^III ions of 1 and 2 both adopt D_2d symmetry, while the two Dy^III centres of 3 display D_2d and D_4d symmetries, respectively. The magnetic property studies of 1-3 indicated that all three complexes exhibit single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviours with energy barriers of 104 K for 1, 98.94 K for 2, and 76.28 K and 45.54 K for 3 under zero dc field. The target of assembling Dy₂ SMMs with two-step relaxation processes was achieved by gradually increasing the sizes of the terminal solvent ligands. Complex 3 exhibits two-step relaxation processes. Complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations were performed on 1-3 to rationalize the observed differences in the magnetic behaviour. It is found that both the angles θ between the magnetic axis and the vector connecting two Dy^III ions and the symmetries of Dy^III ions are vital factors that affect the energy barriers of 1-3. The high local symmetries of the central metals in 1 and 2 make the complexes act as SMMs with higher energy barriers, while the smaller θ angle and different symmetries of the two Dy^III ions render complex 3 as a SMM with a two-step relaxation process. This work demonstrates a new methodology for preparing SMMs with two-step relaxation processes by fine-tuning the terminal solvent ligands.

Designing asymmetric Dy2 single-molecule magnets with two-step relaxation processes by the modification of the coordination environments of Dy(iii) ions

The reaction of Dy(NO₃)₃·6H₂O and an asymmetric Schiff-base ligand H₂L afforded two asymmetric dinuclear compound. Both complexes exhibit single-molecule magnet behavior with two-step slow relaxation processes.

Rare CH3O−/CH3CH2O−-bridged nine-coordinated binuclear DyIII single-molecule magnets (SMMs) significantly regulate and enhance the effective energy barriers

This work presents an efficient approach to regulating and enhancing the magnetic anisotropy barriers through using bridged CH₃O⁻ anion or CH₃CH₂O⁻ anion and constructing triple bridges.

Strong intramolecular DyIII–DyIII magnetic couplings up to 15.00 cm−1 in phenoxyl-bridged dinuclear 4f complexes

Unexpectedly, intramoleular Dy^III–Dy^III magnetic couplings are up to 15.00 cm⁻¹ in the phenolate-bridged Dy₂ complexes. And single-molecule magnet behavior is exhibited with effective energy of 76.18 K under zero dc field.

Solvent-tuned magnetic exchange interactions in Dy2 systems ligated by a μ-phenolato heptadentate Schiff base

A series of binuclear dysprosium compounds, namely, [Dy(api)]₂ (1), [Dy(api)]₂·2CH₂Cl₂ (2), [Dy(Clapi)]₂·2C₄H₈O (3), and [Dy(Clapi)]₂·2C₃H₆O (4) (H₃api = 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3-bis[4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-azabut-3-enyl]-1,3-imidazoline; H₃Clapi = 2-(2′-hydroxy-5′-chlorophenyl)-1,3-bis[3′-aza-4′-(2′′-hydroxy-5′′-chlorophenyl)prop-4′-en-1′-yl]-1,3-imidazolidine), have been isolated by the reactions of salen-type ligands H₃api/H₃Clapi with DyCl₃·6H₂O in different solvent systems. Structural analysis reveals that each salen-type ligand provides a heptadentate coordination pocket (N₄O₃) to encapsulate a Dy^III ion and all of the Dy^III centers in 1–4 adopt a distorted square antiprism geometry with D_4d symmetry. Magnetic studies showed that compound 1 did not exhibit single-molecule magnetic (SMMs) behavior. With the introduction of different lattice solvents, compounds 2–4 showed filed-induced slow magnetic relaxation with barriers U_eff of 18.2 K (2), 28.0 K (3) and 16.4 K (4), respectively. Ab initio calculations were employed to interpret the magnetization behavior of 1–4. The combination of experimental and theoretical data reveal the importance of the weak exchange interaction between the Dy^III ions in the observation of slow magnetic relaxation, and a relaxation mechanism has been developed to rationalize the observed difference in the U_eff values. The different lattice solvents influence Dy–O–Dy bond angles and thus alter the torsion of the square antiprism geometry, consequently resulting in distinct magnetic interactions and the magnetic behavior.
