Exciton dynamics of an aggregation-induced delayed fluorescence emitter in non-doped OLEDs and its application as host for high-efficiency red phosphorescent OLEDs

Aggregation-induced delayed fluorescence (AIDF) materials have great potential in non-doped OLEDs due to their high photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiency in film, high exciton utilization in the aggregated state and negligible efficiency roll-off at high luminance. However, their efficient mechanism in OLEDs is not yet well understood. Here, the exciton dynamics are used to investigate the electroluminescence (EL) mechanism of an AIDF emitter (4-(10H-phenoxazin-10-yl)phenyl)-(9-phenyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)methanone (CP-BP-PXZ) in detail. It can be seen that the high efficiency and negligible efficiency roll-off in non-doped OLEDs based on CP-BP-PXZ as the emitter are ascribed to the effective reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) from high level triplet T2 to singlet S1 in the aggregated state. Furthermore, CP-BP-PXZ also exhibits excellent properties as a phosphor host due to its good AIDF properties. Thus, high-efficiency red phosphorescent OLEDs with low roll-off efficiency are successfully fabricated based on CP-BP-PXZ as the host. The maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) reaches 23% and is maintained at 21% at a luminance of 1000 cd m-2.

Ascorbic Acid-Caused Quenching Effect of Protein Clusteroluminescence Probe: The Fast Fluorescent Detection of Ascorbic Acid in Vegetables

It is interesting and meaningful to explore fluorescent probes for novel rapid detection methods. In this study, we discovered a natural fluorescence probe, bovine serum albumin (BSA), for the assay of ascorbic acid (AA). Due to clusterization-triggered emission (CTE), BSA has the character of clusteroluminescence. AA shows an obvious fluorescence quenching effect on BSA, and the quenching effect increases with increasing concentrations of AA. After optimization, a method for the rapid detection of AA is established by the AA-caused fluorescence quenching effect. The fluorescence quenching effect reaches saturation after 5 min of incubation time and the fluorescence is stable within more than one hour, suggesting a rapid and stable fluorescence response. Moreover, the proposed assay method shows good selectivity and a wide linear range. To further study the mechanisms of AA-caused fluorescence quenching effect, some thermodynamic parameters are calculated. The main intermolecular force between BSA and AA is electrostatic, presumably leading to the inhibiting CTE process of BSA. This method also shows acceptable reliability for the real vegetable sample assay. In summary, this work will not only provide an assay strategy for AA, but also open an avenue for the application expansion of CTE effect of natural biomacromolecules.

Dipole Moment- and Molecular Orbital-Engineered Phosphine Oxide-Free Host Materials for Efficient and Stable Blue Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence

To utilize thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) technology for future displays, it is necessary to develop host materials which harness the full potential of blue TADF emitters. However, no publication has reported such hosts yet. Although the most popular host for blue TADF, bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether oxide (DPEPO) guarantees high-maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax ) TADF devices, they exhibit very short operational lifetimes. In contrast, long-lifespan blue TADF devices employing stable hosts such as 3',5-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-3-carbonitrile (mCBP-CN) exhibit much lower EQEmax than the DPEPO-employed devices. Here, an elaborative approach for designing host molecules is suggested to achieve simultaneously stable and efficient blue TADF devices. The approach is based on engineering the molecular geometry, ground- and excited-state dipole moments of host molecules. The engineered hosts significantly enhance delayed fluorescence quantum yields of TADF emitters, as stabilizing the charge-transfer excited states of the TADF emitters and suppressing exciton quenching, and improve the charge balance. Moreover, they exhibit both photochemical and electrochemical stabilities. The best device employing one of the engineered hosts exhibits 79% increase in EQEmax compared to the mCBP-CN-employed device, together with 140% and 92-fold increases in operational lifetime compared to the respective mCBP-CN- and the DPEPO-based devices.

Photophysics of 9,9-Dimethylacridan-Substituted Phenylstyrylpyrimidines Exhibiting Long-Lived Intramolecular Charge-Transfer Fluorescence and Aggregation-Induced Emission Characteristics

Six pyrimidine-based push-pull systems substituted at positions C2 and C4/6 with phenylacridan and styryl moieties, employing methoxy or N,N-diphenylamino donors, have been designed and synthesized through cross-coupling and Knoevenagel reactions. X-ray analysis confirmed that the molecular structure featured the acridan moiety arranged perpendicularly to the residual π system. Photophysical studies revealed significant differences between the methoxy and N,N-diphenylamino chromophores. Solvatochromic studies revealed that the methoxy derivatives showed dual emission in polar solvents. Time-resolved spectroscopy revealed that the higher energy band involved very fast (<80 ps) fluorescence, whereas the lower energy one included long components (≈30 ns) due to long-lived intramolecular charge-transfer fluorescence. In contrast to N,N-diphenylamino chromophores, the methoxy derivatives also showed aggregation-induced emission in mixtures of THF/water, as well as dual emission in thin films, covering almost the whole visible spectrum with corresponding chromaticity coordinates not far from that of pure white light. These properties render the methoxy derivatives as very promising organic materials for white organic light-emitting diodes.

Stimuli-Responsive Aggregation-Induced Delayed Fluorescence Emitters Featuring the Asymmetric D-A Structure with a Novel Diarylketone Acceptor Toward Efficient OLEDs with Negligible Efficiency Roll-Off

Multifunctional luminescent materials with aggregation-induced delayed fluorescence (AIDF) are capable of suppressing concentration-caused emission quenching and exciton annihilation when used as organic light-emitting diode (OLED) emitters. In this contribution, three stimuli-responsive AIDF luminogens, pipd-BZ-PXZ, pipd-BZ-PTZ, and pipd-BZ-DMAC, featuring a D-A asymmetric framework based on a fused N-heterocycle diarylketone acceptor (imid-azo[1,2-a]pyridin-2-yl(phenyl)methanone pipd) are designed and synthesized. Interestingly, pipd-BZ-PTZ forms two different kinds of crystals (G-crystal and O-crystal) with distinct intermolecular interactions between pipd moieties. The G-crystal with a looser packing mode presents significant morphology-dependent stimuli-responsive behavior with a shifted emission wavelength of 56 nm. Generated by a strong intramolecular charge transfer effect, pipd-BZ-PXZ and pipd-BZ-PTZ exhibit orange to red emission in solution and neat films. Both nondoped and doped devices are fabricated for comparison. Nondoped devices present moderate performance with external quantum efficiencies and current efficiency that reach 7.04% and 19.86 cd A^-1, respectively, and the corresponding efficiency roll off at 1000 cd m^-2 is as small as 2.3%, which is among the best records of AIDF-OLEDs with an emission wavelength over 570 nm. Doped devices show better performance with corresponding efficiencies of up to 55.41 cd A^-1 and 15.77%.

Rational Design of Axially Chiral Platinabinaphthalenes with Aggregation-Induced Emission for Red Circularly Polarized Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials have received a lot of interest due to their potential applications in next-generation displays. However, the development of easily accessible red circularly polarized phosphorescent emitters for practical organic light-emitting diodes fabrication remains a grand challenge. In this paper, we report a new family of CPL-active platinum complexes based on the binaphthalene chiral platform. These axially chiral platinabinaphthalenes were facile synthesized by directly incorporating platinum(II) into the π-conjugated backbone of a commercially available enantiopure binaphthalene derivate. These complexes exhibit aggregation-induced circularly polarized phosphorescence enhancement with high quantum yields of up to 66% and luminescence dissymmetry factors of around 2.6 × 10^-3. Moreover, solution-processable circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CPOLEDs) using these complexes as emitters show good performance with the maximum luminance of up to 3500 cd m^-2 and dissymmetry factor values of around 1.0 × 10^-3. These findings by the rational design of axially chiral platinabinaphthalenes are important for the development of high-performance CPL complexes for CPOLEDs.

Precise Molecular Design for High-Performance Luminogens with Aggregation-Induced Emission

Precise design of fluorescent molecules with desired properties has enabled the rapid development of many research fields. Among the different types of optically active materials, luminogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) have attracted significant interest over the past two decades. The negligible luminescence of AIEgens as a molecular species and high brightness in aggregate states distinguish them from conventional fluorescent dyes, which has galvanized efforts to bring AIEgens to a wide array of multidisciplinary applications. Herein, the useful principles and emerging structure-property relationships for precise molecular design toward AIEgens with desirable properties using concrete examples are revealed. The cutting-edge applications of AIEgens and their excellent performance in enabling new research directions in biomedical theranostics, optoelectronic devices, stimuli-responsive smart materials, and visualization of physical processes are also highlighted.

Through-Space Conjugation: A Thriving Alternative for Optoelectronic Materials

Efficient electronic coupling is the key to constructing optoelectronic functional π systems. Generally, the delocalization of π electrons must comply with the framework constructed by covalent bonds (typically σ bonds), representing classic through-bond conjugation. However, through-space conjugation offers an alternative that achieves spatial electron communication with closely stacked π systems instead of covalent bonds thus enabling multidimensional energy and charge transport. Because of the ever-accelerating advances of through-space conjugation studies, researchers are inspired greatly by the beauty of through-space conjugated systems and their potential in high-tech applications. In this mini review, we introduce some representative and newly developed π systems having the through-space conjugation feature. In addition to discussing the profound impacts of through-space conjugation on the luminescence properties and charge transport, we will review some impressive findings of distinctive molecules with attractive characteristics, such as aggregation-induced emission, thermally activated delayed fluorescence, bipolar charge transport, and multichannel. These achievements may bring about new breakthroughs of theory, materials, and devices in the fields of organic electronics and molecular electronics.

Fluorescent BF2 complexes of pyridyl-isoindoline-1-ones: synthesis, characterization and their distinct response to mechanical force
