Abstract
Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) refers to the differentiation of the left-handed and right-handed emissions of chiral systems in the excited state. Serving as an alternative characterization method to circular dichroism (CD), CPL can detect changes in fluorescence in a chiral system, which could be more efficient in recognizing chiral species. Although CPL can be generated by attaching luminophores to a chiral unit through a covalent bond, the non-covalent bonding of fluorescent chromophores with chiral species or helical nanostructures can also induce CPL and their changes. Thus, CPL can be used as an alternative detection technique for sensing chiral species. In this review, we summarize typical recent advances in chirality sensing based on CPL. The determination of the absolute configuration of chiral compounds and encrypted sensing is also discussed. We hope to provide useful and powerful insights into the construction of chemical sensors based on CPL.

Abstract
Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) dyes are recognized to be new generation materials and have been actively developed. Molecular recognition systems provide nice approaches to novel CPL materials, such as stimuli-responsive switches and chemical sensing materials. CPL may be induced simply by mixing chiral or achiral, luminescent or nonluminescent host and guest; there are several combinations. Molecular recognition can potentially save time and effort to construct well-ordered chiral structures with noncovalent attractive interactions as compared with the multi-step synthesis of covalently bonded dyes. It is a challenging subject to engage molecular recognition events with CPL, and it is important and interesting to see how it is achieved. In fact, simple molecular recognition systems can even enable the fine adjustment of CPL performance and detailed conformational/configurational analysis of the excited state. Here we overview the recent achievements of simple host-guest complexes capable of exhibiting CPL, summarizing concisely the host/guest structures, CPL intensities, and characteristics.

Abstract
Long-range chirality recognition between the two chiral guest ligands can be tuned based on the helix distances (dLn–Ln = 11.5 and 14.0 Å) of bis-diketonate bridged dinuclear lanthanide complexes (2Th and 3Th, respectively) used as mediators. Both 2Th and 3Th form one-dimensional (1D) helical structures upon terminal binding of two chiral guest co-ligands (LR or LS). Long-range chiral self-recognition is achieved in self-assembly of 2Th with LR and LS to preferentially form homochiral assemblies, 2Th-LR·LR and 2Th-LS·LS, whereas there is no direct molecular interaction between the two guest ligands at the terminal edges. X-ray crystal structure analysis and density functional theory studies reveal that long-range chiral recognition is achieved by terminal ligand-to-ligand interactions between the bis-diketonate ligands and chiral guest co-ligands. Conversely, in self-assembly of 3Th with a longer helix length, statistical binding of LR and LS occurs, forming heterochiral (3Th-LR·LS) and homochiral (3Th-LR·LR and 3Th-LS·LS) assemblies in an almost 1 : 1 ratio. When phenyl side arms of the chiral guest co-ligands are replaced by isopropyl groups (L′R and L′S), chiral self-recognition is also achieved in the self-assembly process of 3Th with the longer helix length to generate homochiral (3Th-L′R·L′R and 3Th-L′S·L′S) assemblies as the favored products. Thus, subtle modification of the chiral guests is capable of achieving over 1.4 nm-range chirality recognition. Long-range chirality recognition between the two chiral guest ligands can be tuned based on the helix distances (dLn–Ln = 11.5 and 14.0 Å) of bis-diketonate bridged dinuclear lanthanide complexes (2Th and 3Th, respectively).![]()

Abstract
Creating optically pure metal assemblies is a hot research topic in the realms of chiral supramolecules. Here, three new triple-stranded europium(iii) helicates Eu2L3(L′)2 [L = 4,4′-bis(4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-dioxobutyl)diphenyl sulphide; L′ = 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) or R/S-2,2′-bis(diphenylphosphinyl)-1,1′-binaphthyl (R/S-BINAPO)] were synthesized in order to investigate the effects of ancillary ligands on controlling the stereoselective self-assembly of lanthanide helicates. X-ray single crystal structure analysis showed that Eu2L3(Phen)2 crystalized in an achiral space group P1̄ with the equivalent amount of P and M helicates in one single cell. The isolated Eu2L3(S-BINAPO)2 and Eu2L3(R-BINAPO)2 were verified to be enantiopure by 1H, 19F, 31P NMR and DOSY NMR analyses. Additionally, the mirror-image CD spectra also demonstrated the successful syntheses of the enantiomers and the presence of an effective chirality transformation from BINAPO to achiral L. Furthermore, the perfect mirror-image circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra of Eu2L3(S-BINAPO)2 and Eu2L3(R-BINAPO)2 indicated the existence of the excited state chirality of the Eu3+ center associated with |glum| values reaching 0.112. In addition, the photophysical properties of three helicates were also discussed. Chiral ancillary ligands (R/S-BINAPO) modulated the stereoselective self-assembly of lanthanide helicates, which presented strong CPL with |glum| values up to 0.112 and high luminescence quantum yield up to 34%.![]()

Abstract
Determination of the absolute configuration (AC) of chiral molecules is a key issue in many fields related to chirality such as drug development, the asymmetric reaction screening, and the structure determination of natural compounds. Although various methods, such as X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy, are used to determine the AC, a simple and cheap alternative method is always anticipated. So far, electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectroscopy has been widely used to ascertain the AC and enantiomeric excess (ee) values by applying appropriate organic probes. Here, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectroscopy was applied to determine the AC and ee values of a series of amino acid and amino alcohol. The measurements were conducted by mixing the amino acids or amino alcohols with an achiral 1-hydroxy-2-naphthaldehyde. Upon in situ formation of the Schiff base complexes, the system showed emission enhancement and CPL in the presence of Al3+ , whose intensity and sign can be used to assign the chiral sense of the amino acids and amino alcohols. The authenticity of the method was further compared with the established CD spectroscopy, revealing that CPL spectra of formed Al3+ complex were effective to determine the AC of chiral species.

Abstract
We recently found that [Eu(pda)2 ]- (pda: 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid), which has an achiral structure in crystals, exhibits circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in aqueous solutions containing chiral amino acids such as arginine and histidine. CPL measurements were performed for agar gel, which includes an aqueous solution of [Eu(pda)2 ]- and chiral arginine or histidine. The spectral shape, concentration, and pH dependences on CPL intensity in the agar gels were very close to those in aqueous solutions, indicating that the CPL of the EuIII complex in the agar gels was induced by mechanism similar to that in aqueous solutions. We performed spatially resolved CPL measurements using a laboratory-built microscopic CPL spectroscopic system for agar-gel samples, where d- and l- amino acids were separately dispersed. We successfully recorded CPL imaging maps showing spatial dispersions of d- and l-amino acid in the agar gels.
