Electroluminochromic Materials and Devices Based on Metal Complexes

Electrofluorochromic Switching of Heat-Induced Cross-Linkable Multi-Styryl-Terminated Triphenylamine and Tetraphenylethylene Derivatives

High-performance electrochromic (EC) and electrofluorochromic (EFC) materials have garnered considerable interest due to their diverse applications in smart windows, optoelectronics, optical displays, military camouflage, etc. While many different EC and EFC polymers have been reported, their preparation often requires multiple steps, and their polymer molecular weights are subjected to batch variation. In this work, we prepared two triphenylamine (TPA)-based and two tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based derivatives functionalized with terminal styryl groups via direct Suzuki coupling with (4-vinylphenyl)boronic acid and vinylboronic acid pinacol ester. The two novel TPE derivatives exhibited green-yellow aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The EC and EFC properties of pre- and post-thermally treated derivatives spin-coated onto ITO-glass substrates were studied. While all four derivatives showed modest absorption changes with applied voltages up to +2.4 V, retaining a high degree of optical transparency, they exhibited obvious EFC properties with the quenching of blue to yellow fluorescence with IOFF/ON contrast ratios of up to 7.0. The findings therefore demonstrate an elegant approach to preparing optically transparent, heat-induced, cross-linkable styryl-functionalized EFC systems.

Employing polyaniline/viologen complementarity to enhance coloration and charge dissipation in multicolor electrochromic display with wide modulation range

Multicolor electrochromic devices have gained attention widely. To support the development of multicolor electrochromic devices, we studied complementary combinations of a multicolor switchable polyaniline (PANI) electrode and 1-methyl-4,4'-bipyridyl iodide (MBI). In particular, MBI acting as an electrolyte and cathodic electrochromic layer can not only simplify the architecture of a device, but also support the color richness of the device simultaneously. Wide band optical modulation in visible light (58.1% at 550 nm) and near-infrared light (35% at 800 nm) confirms the advantageous optical properties of the combination, possessing a wide color gamut range over a range of working voltages adjustable for red, yellow, green, blue, and purple, each having a high color contrast of up to 73.8. This is accompanied by the excellent electrochemical performances of the mentioned combination, such as a fast response time of 1 s/1.9 s (modulating 77%-colored/bleached) with good cycle stability, and high coloration efficiency of 140.63 cm2/C. In addition, utilizing a screen-printed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a masking barrier layer, it is possible to display patterned anti-counterfeit information within the application. Given these electrochromic performance properties, it is considered a readily feasible strategy to utilize PANI and MBI combination to develop novel electrochromic devices, which can be used widely in the areas of smart packaging, smart labels, and flexible smart windows associated with specific application scenarios.

Nitrogen Atom Induced Contrast Effect on the Mechanofluorochromic Characteristics of Anthracene-Based Acceptor-Donor-Acceptor Fluorescent Molecules

The mechanofluorochromic (MFC) characteristics of anthracene-based acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) fluorescent molecules are explored through a comprehensive investigation of their photophysical behaviors. Six 9,10-diheteroarylanthracene derivatives with varying acceptor groups (pyridin-4-yl, pyridin-3-yl, pyridin-2-yl, pyrimidin-5-yl, pyrazinyl and quinoxalinyl) are synthesized and systematically characterized. The photophysical properties in both solution and solid-state are examined, revealing subtle yet significant influences of the spatial arrangement and number of nitrogen atoms within the acceptor group on fluorescence emission. Single-crystal structures of these compounds provide insights into their steric configurations and intermolecular packing modes, offering valuable insights into the fundamental mechanisms that underlie the observed MFC properties. This study illuminates the intricate interplay between MFC properties and the refined molecular structure, thus presenting promising avenues for the design and advancement of novel MFC materials.

Polymorph-Dependent Phosphorescence of Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Complexes and Its Relation to Non-covalent Interactions

Cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes [Pt(ppy)Cl(CNAr)] (ppy = 2-phenylpyridinato-C²,N; Ar = C₆H₄-2-I 1, C₆H₄-4-I 2, C₆H₃-2-F-4-I 3, and C₆H₃-2,4-I₂ 4) bearing ancillary isocyanide ligands were obtained by the bridge-splitting reaction between the dimer [Pt(ppy)(μ-Cl)]₂ and 2 equiv any one of the corresponding CNAr. Complex 2 was crystallized in two polymorphic forms, namely, 2 ^I and 2 ^II, exhibiting green (emission quantum yield of 0.5%) and orange (emission quantum yield of 12%) phosphorescence, respectively. Structure-directing non-covalent contacts in these polymorphs were verified by a combination of experimental (X-ray diffraction) and theoretical methods (NCIplot analysis, combined electron localization function (ELF), and Bader quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM analysis)). A noticeable difference in the spectrum of non-covalent interactions of 2 ^I and 2 ^II is seen in the Pt···Pt interactions in 2 ^II and absence of these metallophilic contacts in 2 ^I. The other solid luminophores, namely, 1, 3 ^I-II, 4, and 4·CHCl₃, exhibit green luminescence; their structures include intermolecular C-I···Cl-Pt halogen bonds as the structure-directing interactions. Crystals of 1, 2 ^I, 3 ^I, 3 ^II, 4, and 4·CHCl₃ demonstrated a reversible mechanochromic color change achieved by mechanical grinding (green to orange) and solvent adsorption (orange to green).

Manipulating Electroluminochromism Behavior of Viologen-Substituted Iridium(III) Complexes through Ligand Engineering for Information Display and Encryption

Electrically controlling photoluminescence has attracted great research interest and offers many opportunities for technological developments. Electroluminochromic materials undergo redox reactions under low-voltage stimuli to achieve reversible luminescence switching. Till now, photoluminescence switching of a single molecule caused by electrical stimuli is restricted to intensity response because the redox-active moieties are good electron donors or acceptors and electrical stimuli can regulate the photoinduced electron-transfer and affect the luminescence intensity. In this work, the manipulation of the electroluminochromism behavior of a series of viologen-substituted iridium(III) complexes through the regulation of ligand orbital energy levels and electronic communication between the viologen pendants and the iridium(III) complex core is reported. Electrochemical redox reactions reversibly modulate either the luminescence quenching effect or the push-pull electronic effect of the viologen substituents, achieving multicolor "on-off" luminescence response toward electrical stimuli and luminescence manipulation between two emissive states with different wavelengths and lifetimes. To illustrate the promising applications of these electroluminochromic materials, recording and displaying luminescence information under electrical stimuli are demonstrated. Information encryption is realized by letting the electroluminochromism occur in the near-infrared region or in the time domain. Near-infrared camera or time-resolved luminescence analysis can be used to help read the invisible information.
