Abstract
Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) are a promising technology for large-scale storage of electrical energy, combining safety, high capacity, ease of scalability, and prolonged durability; features which have triggered their early commercial implementation. Furthering the deployment of VRFB technologies requires addressing challenges associated to a pivotal component: the membrane. Examples include vanadium crossover, insufficient conductivity, escalated costs, and sustainability concerns related to the widespread adoption of perfluoroalkyl-based membranes, e.g., perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA). Herein, recent advances in high-performance and sustainable membranes for VRFB, offering insights into prospective research directions to overcome these challenges, are reviewed. The analysis reveals the disparities and trade-offs between performance advances enabled by PFSA membranes and composites, and the lack of sustainability in their final applications. The potential of PFSA-free membranes and present strategies to enhance their performance are discussed. This study delves into vital membrane parameters to enhance battery performance, suggesting protocols and design strategies to achieve high-performance and sustainable VRFB membranes.

Abstract
A selective composite membrane for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) was successfully prepared by layer-by-layer (LbL) technique using a perfluorosulfonic sulfonic acid or Nafion 117 (N117). The composite membrane referred as N117-(PEI/GO)n, was obtained by depositing alternating layers of positively charged polyethylenimine (PEI) and negatively charged graphene oxide (GO) as polyelectrolytes. The physicochemical properties and performance of the pristine and composite membranes were investigated. The membrane showed an enhancement in proton conductivity and simultaneously exhibited a notable 90% reduction in vanadium permeability. This, in turn, results in a well-balanced ratio of proton conductivity to vanadium permeability, leading to high selectivity. The highest selectivity of the LbL membranes was found to be 19.2 × 104 S.min/cm3, which is 13 times higher than the N117 membrane (n = 0). This was translated into an improvement in the battery performance, with the n = 1 membrane showing a 4-6% improvement in coulombic efficiency and a 7-15% improvement in voltage efficiency at current densities ranging from 40 to 80 mA/cm2. Furthermore, the membrane displays stable operation over a long-term stability at around 88% at a current density of 40 mA/cm2, making it an attractive option for VRFB applications using the LbL technique. The use of PEI/GO bilayers maintains high proton conductivity and VE of the battery, opening up possibilities for further optimization and improvement of VRFBs.

Abstract
The ion exchange membrane of the Nafion series widely used in vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) is characterized by its high cost and high vanadium permeability, which limit the further commercialization of VFBs. Herein, a thin composite membrane enabled by a low-cost microporous polyethylene (PE) substrate and perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) resin is proposed to reduce the cost of the membrane. Meanwhile, the rigid PE substrate limits the swelling of the composite membrane, which effectively reduces the penetration of vanadium ions and improves the ion selectivity of the composite membrane. Benefiting from such a rational design, a VFB assembled with the PE/PFSA composite membrane exhibited a higher coulombic efficiency (CE ≈ 96.8%) compared with commercial Nafion212 at 200 mA cm-2. Significantly, the energy efficiency maintained stability within 200 cycles with a slow decay rate. In practical terms, the thin PE/PFSA composite membrane with low cost and high ion selectivity can make an ideal membrane candidate in VFBs.

Abstract
A vanadium flow battery (VFB) is one of the most promising electrochemical energy storage technologies. However, membranes for VFBs still suffer from high cost or low conductivity and poor stability. Here, we report new quaternized anthrone-containing poly(aryl ether ketone) (QAnPEK) membranes for VFBs. QAnPEK membranes with moderate ion exchange capacity (1.26 mmol g-1) were swelling-induced in H3PO4 (50 wt %) to form wider ion transport pathways that significantly enhanced membrane conductivity (e.g., 0.49 Ω cm2 for the QAnPEK-virgin membrane and 0.12 Ω cm2 for the swelling-induced QAnPEK-90 membrane). The bulky rigid anthrone-containing backbone provided high swelling resistance and enabled QAnPEK membranes to have high ion selectivity. As a result, QAnPEK membranes displayed low area resistance, high ion selectivity, and robust mechanical strength. The QAnPEK-90 membrane yielded excellent energy efficiencies (92.4% at 80 mA cm-2, 85.1% at 200 mA cm-2, and 80.3% at 280 mA cm-2). Moreover, QAnPEK membranes exhibited outstanding in situ and ex situ stability, for example, the VFB with the QAnPEK-40 membrane demonstrated highly stable battery performance for 3000 cycles at 160 mA cm-2. QAnPEK membranes are attractive candidates for VFB application.

Abstract
Polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) play vital roles in electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices, such as polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), redox flow battery, and water electrolysis. As the crucial component of these devices, PEMs need to possess high ion conductivity and electronic insulation, remarkable mechanical and chemical stability, and outstanding isolation function for the materials on both sides of the cathode and anode. Polyvinylpyrrolidone has received widespread attention in the research of PEMs owing to its tertiary amine basic groups and exceptional hydrophilic properties. This review focuses on the application status of polyvinylpyrrolidone-based PEMs in PEMFC, vanadium redox flow battery, and alkaline water electrolysis, and describes in detail the key scientific problems in these fields, providing constructive suggestions and guidance for the application of polyvinylpyrrolidone-based PEMs in electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices.

Abstract
In recent years, vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) have captured immense attraction in electrochemical energy storage systems due to their long cycle life, flexibility, high-energy efficiency, time, and reliability. In VRFB, polymer membranes play a significant role in transporting protons for current transmission and act as barriers between positive and negative electrodes/electrolytes. Commercial polymer membranes (such as Nafion) are the widely used IEM in VRFBs due to their outstanding chemical stability and proton conductivity. However, the membrane cost and increased vanadium ions permeability limit its commercial application. Therefore, various modified perfluorinated and non-perfluorinated membranes have been developed. This comprehensive review primarily focuses on recent developments of hybrid polymer composite membranes with inorganic TiO2 nanofillers for VRFB applications. Hence, various fabrications are performed in the membrane with TiO2 to alter their physicochemical properties for attaining perfect IEM. Additionally, embedding the -SO3H groups by sulfonation on the nanofiller surface enhances membrane proton conductivity and mechanical strength. Incorporating TiO2 and modified TiO2 (sTiO2, and organic silica modified TiO2) into Nafion and other non-perfluorinated membranes (sPEEK and sPI) has effectively influenced the polymer membrane properties for better VRFB performances. This review provides an overall spotlight on the impact of TiO2-based nanofillers in polymer matrix for VRFB applications.

Abstract
Proton exchange membrane (PEM) is pivotal for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In the present work, a block copolymer with hydrophilic alkyl sulfonated side groups and hydrophobic flexible alkyl ether side groups, poly(5'-hexyloxy-1',4-biphenyl)-b-poly(2',4'-bispropoxysulfonate-1',4-biphenyl) (HBP-b-xBPSBP), is designed and synthesized by copolymerization of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic oligomers. The oligomers are synthesized via a Pd-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling of 1,3-dibromo-5-hexyloxybenzene, and 3,3'-[(4,6-dibromo-1,3-phenylene)bis(oxy)]bis(propane-1-sulfonate) or 1,4-bis(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)benzene. The good solubility and film-forming characteristics are achieved via the introduction of flexible hexyloxy side groups, and high ion exchange capacity (IEC) is achieved via the introduction of high density of alkyl sulfonated side groups. The HBP-b-0.5BPSBP has the highest IEC of 3.17 mmol/g, the highest proton conductivity of 43.5 mS/cm at 95 °C and 90% relative humidity (RH) and low methanol permeability of 6.45×10-7 cm2 /s. Meanwhile, crosslinked HBP-b-xBPSBP exhibits promising water uptake, swelling ratio and low methanol permeability. These characteristics are attributed to the crosslinked structure and the hydrophilic/hydrophobic nanophase separation morphology promoted by the poly(m-phenylene) main chains, flexible alkyl ether groups, and alkyl sulfonated side groups.

Abstract
An aminopropyl isobutyl polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane (NH2-POSS) surface-modified Nafion membrane has been designed by chemical grafting for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). NH2-POSS is a cage-like macromer consisting of an inorganic Si8O12 core surrounded by seven inert isobutyl groups and one active aminopropyl group. The sulfonic acid groups on the surface of Nafion can be activated by 1,1-carbonyldiimidazole for further modification with NH2-POSS. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) prove that NH2-POSS has been successfully grafted on the surface of a Nafion 115 membrane. Although the proton conductivity decreases slightly, the organic-inorganic hybrid membranes display enhanced ion selectivity and excellent dimensional stability with lower water uptake and swelling ratio than Nafion 115. Moreover, two-dimensional-grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (2D-GIXRD) reveals that the introduction of NH2-POSS forms a POSS layer on the surface of the membrane and narrows the space of Nafion clusters, which helps to block VO2+ permeation. A VRFB with the surface-modified Nafion membrane displays an outstanding performance with an average Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 98.7% and energy efficiency (EE) of 84.5% at a current density of 80 mA cm-2, superior to those of the Nafion 115 membrane (CE = 95.7%, EE = 81.7%). Furthermore, the cell holds a high capacity retention of 49.2% after 1000 charge-discharge cycles, in contrast to that of 41.9% for the cell with Nafion 115 after only 200 cycles. The results suggest that the surface-modified hybrid membrane is a promising strategy to overcome the vanadium ion crossover in VRFBs.

Abstract
In this work, we propose a sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) composite proton-conductive membrane based on a 3-(1-hydro-imidazolium-3-yl)-propane-1-sulfonate (Him-pS) additive to break through the trade-off between conductivity and selectivity of a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Specifically, Him-pS enables an oriented distribution of the SPEEK matrix to construct highly conductive proton nanochannels throughout the membrane arising from the noncovalent interaction. Moreover, the "acid-base pair" effect from an imidazolium group and a sulfonic group further facilitates the proton transport through the nanochannels. Meanwhile, the structure of the acid-base pair is further confirmed based on density functional theory calculations. Material and electrochemical characterizations indicate that the nanochannels with a size of 16.5 nm are vertically distributed across the membrane, which not only accelerate proton conductivity (31.54 mS cm-1) but also enhance the vanadium-ion selectivity (39.9 × 103 S min cm-3). Benefiting from such oriented proton-conductive nanochannels in the membrane, the cell delivers an excellent Coulombic efficiency (CE, ≈ 98.8%) and energy efficiency (EE, ≈ 78.5%) at 300 mA cm-2. More significantly, the cell maintains a stable energy efficiency over 600 charge-discharge cycles with only a 5.18% decay. Accordingly, this work provides a promising fabrication strategy for a high-performance membrane of VRFB.

Abstract
Owing to the lack of systematic kinetic theory about the redox reaction of V(III)/V(II), the poor electrochemical performance of the negative process in vanadium flow batteries limits the overall battery performance to a great extent. As the key factors that influence electrode/electrolyte interfacial reactivity, the physicochemical properties of the V(III) acidic electrolyte play an important role in the redox reaction of V(III)/V(II), hence a systematic investigation of the physical and electrochemical characteristics of V(III) acidic electrolytes with different concentrations and related diffusion kinetics was conducted in this work. It was found that the surface tension and viscosity of the electrolyte increase with increasing V(III) concentration, while the corresponding conductivity shows an opposite trend. Both the surface tension and viscosity change slightly with increasing concentration of H2SO4, but the conductivity increases significantly, indicating that a lower V(III) concentration and a higher H2SO4 concentration are conducive to the ion transfer process. The electrochemical measurements further show that a higher V(III) concentration will facilitate the redox reaction of V(III)/V(II), while the increase in H2SO4 concentration only improves the ion transmission and has little effect on the electron transfer process. Furthermore, the diffusion kinetics of V(III) have been further studied with cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry. The results show that an elevated temperature facilitates the V(III)/V(II) redox reaction and gives rise to an increased electrode reaction rate constant (ks) and diffusion coefficient [DV(III)]. On this basis, the diffusion activation energy (13.7 kJ·mol−1) and the diffusion equation of V(III) are provided to integrate kinetic theory in the redox reaction of V(III)/V(II).

Abstract
Zinc-based flow batteries have gained widespread attention and are considered to be one of the most promising large-scale energy storage devices for increasing the utilization of intermittently sustainable energy. However, the formation of zinc dendrites at anodes has seriously depressed their cycling life, security, coulombic efficiency, and charging capacity. Inhibition of zinc dendrites is thus the bottleneck to further improving the performance of zinc-based flow batteries, but it remains a major challenge. Considering recent developments, this mini review analyzes the formation mechanism and growth process of zinc dendrites and presents and summarizes the strategies for preventing zinc dendrites by regulating the interfaces between anodes and electrolytes. Four typical strategies, namely electrolyte modification, anode engineering, electric field regulation, and ion transfer control, are comprehensively highlighted. Finally, remaining challenges and promising directions are outlined and anticipated for zinc dendrites in zinc-based flow batteries.
