Alexithymia is related to poor social competence in autistic and nonautistic children

Brief Report: Alexithymia Trait Severity, Not Autistic Trait Severity, Relates to Caregiver Reactions to Autistic Children's Negative Emotions

Alexithymia impacts an individual's ability to recognize and understand emotions and frequently co-occurs with autism. This study investigated the relationship between children's alexithymia, autistic traits, and caregiver reactions to their child's negative emotions. Caregivers of 54 autistic and 51 non-autistic children between the ages of 7 and 12 years rated their child's alexithymia and autistic trait severity and their reactions to their child's negative emotions. Caregivers of autistic children reported greater supportive reactions and fewer restrictive/controlling reactions to their child's negative emotions when their child had more alexithymia traits. This study extends previous research by demonstrating that caregivers of autistic children with co-occurring alexithymia traits represent a specific subgroup of caregivers that respond more positively to their child's negative emotions.

Correlation Analyses Between Childhood Behavioral Disturbance and Maternal Alexithymia: An Observational Study

Purpose

Caregivers' responses have an impact on children's emotional and behavioral development. The inability of caregivers to perceive their own emotions affects their responses to children. This study aims to examine the relationship between a mother's difficulties in emotional expression and children's emotional and behavioral disorders.

Patient and Methods

A total of 78 cases, aged between 3 and 15 years old, were included in this study. The mothers completed the Taiwan version of the "Toronto Alexithymia Scale" (TAS) and "Children's Behavior Checklist" (CBCL) questionnaires, which served as research tools. TAS consists of three factors: difficulty in distinguishing emotions (Factor 1, F1), difficulty in expressing feelings (Factor 2, F2), and an externally oriented thinking style (Factor 3, F3). CBCL represents a child's behavior profile. The Mann-Whitney test and correlation analyses were used for follow-up analysis.

Results

Our analysis revealed that F1, F2, F3, and total scores of TAS (TAS-Total) correlate positively with the somatic complaint subscale of CBCL (F1: p = 0.003; F2: p = 0.002; F3: p = 0.034, TAS-Total p=0.002). Additionally, TAS-F1 was positively correlated with the internalizing problems subscale of CBCL (p = 0.020) and the withdrawn (WD) subscale of CBCL (p = 0.044). We also found a significant association between TAS-F1 and WD of CBCL in boys alone (p = 0.022). However, we observed a negative association between TAS-F3 and the social problems subscale of CBCL in boys alone (p = 0.038).

Conclusion

Mothers with alexithymic features are more likely to have children who internalize emotions, leading to withdrawal and somatic expression. Boys tend to exhibit withdrawal traits associated with internalization. This study provides initial evidence of a partial correlation between maternal alexithymia and children's emotional and behavioral disorders, emphasizing the importance of investigating caregivers' emotional traits for a better understanding of children's development in the future.

Towards a "New Mothering" Practice? The Life Experiences of Mothers Raising a Child with Autism in Urban Ethiopia

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurological and developmental disorder that has seen an increase in prevalence over the past two decades, particularly in low and middle-income countries. The purpose of the current paper is to examine the experiences of mothers in Ethiopia raising a child with ASD through employing a qualitative research design involving semi-structured interviews with twenty mothers. The experiences of mothers in this study fell into three thematic areas: (1) grieving and experiencing other emotions arising from the diagnosis of their child; (2) developing, understanding and defining autism; and (3) accepting the diagnosis and developing coping strategies for raising their child. The findings revealed that raising a child with autism introduced a new lifelong experience to mothers' everyday lives, profoundly changing their parenting role and transforming their view of mothering. Recognition of the experience of "new mothering" and mothers' meaning-making process, stress, coping mechanisms and resilience is critical to informing policies, programs, counseling and other therapeutic efforts to assist children with autism and their families for social workers in Ethiopia and those working with the Ethiopian diaspora in other regions of the world.

Autism traits dimensionality and multivariate relationship with alexithymia and anxiety in the general population

BACKGROUND

Autism is characterized by social and non-social alterations observed beyond the clinical diagnosis. Research analyzing the expression of autism traits in the general population helps to unravel the relationship between autism dimensions and other associated variables, such as alexithymia and anxiety. The Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ) was developed to assess autism traits in the general population; however, inconsistent results regarding its dimensionality have emerged.

AIMS

This study aimed to extend evidence about the AQ measurement model, and explore the multivariate relationship between autism traits, alexithymia, and trait anxiety.

METHODS

292 adults of the general population were recruited. An Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis were performed to assess the factorial structure of AQ. A path analysis was carried out to explore the relationship between autism traits, alexithymia, and trait anxiety.

RESULTS

The results supported a three-factor model of AQ. The path analysis model showed evidence of a significant role of alexithymia as a mediator of the relationship between autism traits and anxiety.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

The present study provides empirical support for a three-factor model of AQ in the general population. The association between autism traits, alexithymia, and anxiety dimensions highlights the multidimensional nature of these variables and the need to account for their distinct impact on autism-related variables.

Alexithymia, social inhibition, affectivity, and knowledge hiding

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the impact of adverse personality traits (alexithymia, social inhibition, negative affectivity) and supervisor knowledge hiding on individual knowledge hiding. This study also explores the moderating role of positive affectivity.

Design/methodology/approach

Partial least squares path modeling and data collected from 518 Polish employees with higher education and extensive professional experience recruited via an Ariadna survey panel were used to test the research hypotheses.

Findings

Two dimensions of alexithymia were considered: difficulty identifying feelings (DIF) and difficulty describing feelings (DDF). DIF has a direct impact on individual hiding, whereas DDF has an indirect impact, via social inhibition. Negative affectivity is a predictor of social inhibition, which enhances knowledge hiding. Positive affectivity slightly weakens the positive and strong effect of supervisor knowledge hiding on subordinate knowledge hiding.

Practical implications

Because alexithymia, social inhibition and negative affectivity may predispose employees to knowledge hiding, managers should identify these personality traits among job applicants and hired employees to make appropriate employment decisions. Moreover, managers should be aware that hiding knowledge by a supervisor may be imitated by subordinates.

Originality/value

Based on conservation of resources theory, this study investigates previously unexplored relationships among alexithymia, social inhibition, affectivity and knowledge hiding.
